How To Carve A Pumpkin

I have been trying to draw this cartoon for over a week.

There have been a lot of cartoons this October with the theme of scary news with each featuring TVs. I didn’t like any of them. But I thought of this one last week and it tickled me. I thought it was a better way to do “scary” news. I drew it up and submitted it to CNN who passed it over. But after the mass shooting in Maine, I submitted it again with the new addition. It was passed over again. I’m OK with that because it wasn’t the strongest cartoon in either of those two batches…but I still dug it. You will see both of the proposed versions in the next blog of roughs.

I meant to draw this yesterday but I got a second anti-gun idea in my head and did that instead. But if I was going to do this cartoon, then I had to do it today. My syndication clients will find this in their inbox tomorrow morning and for those who publish daily, they can run it Tuesday on Halloween. A few may even run it the day after.

This cartoon’s shelf life will be less than an actual pumpkin’s….but like the Great Pumpking, it’ll rise again next season.

Happy Halloween. And if I don’t visit my blog between now and then, BOO!

  1. The news is terrifying, even moreso than you had room for. It is almost amazing civilization still exists considering all the nastiness that goes on around us. Is that a testament to human adaptability, or to our better natures? Or is it just a sign that no one knows how to stop the horror! Life goes on, but for how long? We need to become better citizens of the world if humanity is going to survive. But we have no guarantees. Homo sapien sspiens are not as wise as we like to think ourselves to be!

  2. That’ll do it all right.

On a side note, an artist blog I was following had a video a couple of weeks ago of him carving a Trumpkin with the hopes of taking pictures as it aged over the next couple of weeks or so. The first night, a deer ate Trumpkin’s face, which seemed to be a more fitting end.
