LaPierre Client List

Which is worse, being on the client list of a pedophile or the client list of an enabler of school shootings.

Wayne LaPierre is stepping down as head of the National Rifle Association after more than three decades leading the gun fetish club. LaPierre is facing a corruption trial in New York and is going against state Attorney General Letitia James, who’s also currently prosecuting the Trump Organization.

The National Rifle Association is a nonprofit and LaPierre has been using its funds for stuff like being a regular client at Zegna boutique in Beverly Hills, where he spent nearly $40,000 of N.R.A. money in a single outing in 2004. I hope he looked fabulous (he did not). He’s also used NRA funds for trips to Italy, Palm Beach, Reno, and the Bahamas, where the thought of running into a nude Wayne LaPierre on a beach can really affect tourism. You might see his love gun.

Under LaPierre’s leadership, the NRA has lost over two million members and revenue is down 44 percent. The group attempted to declare bankruptcy three years ago in Texas even though it is registered in New York, but a judge denied the effort.

In a statement, LaPierre said, “With pride in all that we have accomplished, I am announcing my resignation from the NRA.” And they have accomplished a lot, if you consider putting assault rifles over the lives of children and creating an American gun culture in this nation that horrifies other nations an accomplishment. The NRA’s greatest accomplishment may be going from an organization promoting gun safety to a Republican lobbying group that makes it easier for right-wing lunatic racist antisemitic MAGAts to conduct mass shootings on historic epic levels.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 656 mass shootings in this country last year, killing 739 people. So far, there have been five in the past six days of 2024. There were 18,854 gun deaths last year. The leading cause of death for children is now guns. Whoever takes over the job permanently from LaPierre is certain to continue leading the group to choose guns over lives.

As Wayne LaPierre goes to trial against Letitia James, all I have to offer him are thoughts and prayers.

  1. Several (but as a proportion, many fewer) Dems also accept money from the NRA. The gun lobby has been, perhaps, the most effective in corrupting legislators of all political persuasions nationwide. Sad, but true.

Get money out of politics (remembering, of course, that “corporations are people, too” (Mitt Romney’s answer to a question in 2016.) The electoral system in the US is inherently anit-democratic and among the most corrupt in the modern world. Solutions within the existing structure are blocked. Fundamental constitutional reforms are necessary; a constitutional convention is increasingly needed to replace the compromised and outdated original flawed document. (In the same approximate time frame, the French are on their fifth, the Spanish on their third – although it’s not a republic. But the American structure is written in pre-industrial stone.)
