Wrong Protest

There have been a lot of protests lately at universities across the country over the war in GAZA. Most appear to be in support of Palestinians and against what they call Israel’s Apartheid-like treatment of Gaza. Republicans and even some headlines from right-wing outlets are accusing the students of supporting Hamas and terrorism.

Republicans, the people who are all about “free speech” and having Trump and Nazis reinstated on Twitter, want the pro-Palestinian protests shut down. Goons like Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton (who’s such a racist, that he’s from Arkansas and his name is Cotton) want pro-Palestinian protesters who are in the nation on student visas to be deported. It must be horrible to be conditioned to only hear what you want to hear after years of watching Fox News, and then to suddenly have to hear something that makes a little tinkle come out, like “Trump lost.”

Former Utah governor and ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has “closed his checkbook” to UPenn, to which he and his family have donated tens of millions of dollars over the years.

Huntsman is upset that a pro-Palestinian rally featuring some individuals who have made antisemitic comments in the past was allowed to occur on the campus. Hunstman wrote, “The University’s silence in the face of reprehensible and historic Hamas evil against the people of Israel (when the only response should be outright condemnation) is a new low. Silence is antisemitism.” Except the university wasn’t silent.

School President Liz Magill and Provost John L. Jackson Jr. condemned Hamas’ assault on Israel as “abhorrent.” The pair wrote before Huntsman closed his checkbook, “Many members of our community are hurting right now. Our thoughts are especially with those grieving the loss of loved ones or facing grave uncertainty about the safety of their families and friends.”

I think Huntsman chose to be offended. Protests are pretty common in college. While it may be more heated than usual at this time, college is where you hear radical opinions. Weren’t Republicans all about universities allowing white nationalist Richard Spencer and other goosestepping goons to speak to students on campuses across the nation fairly recently? I recall these hissy fits to allow Nazis to speak to student groups (I think the word “cancel” was used a lot), but now Republicans want to deport students that they deem antisemitic.

If there’s one group that should NOT want us to start deporting people for antisemitism, it’s Republicans.

There have been some statements and protests blaming Israel for the war on campuses, but most I’ve seen have been in support of Palestinians, not terrorists. There is a difference between supporting Palestinians and supporting terrorists. If you think one is the same as the other, then you might be Islamophobic.

Many Jewish students are concerned for their safety and they have good reasons to be. Even before the war, hate crimes against Jews were on the rise and antisemitism was running wild. It still is. A day doesn’t go by without a Republican in Congress tweeting something about “globalists.” Yeah, we know what that word means. We also know what you mean when you howl about George Soros.

I believe students protesting to liberate Palestine need to be mindful of their Jewish classmates’ feelings and make it clear to them that they don’t intend to threaten their safety or even make them uncomfortable. And Jewish students should do the same for their Muslim classmates.

We shouldn’t keep score but so far, the only death from a lunatic inspired by the war has been that of a Palestinian child in the Chicago suburbs. There shouldn’t be any hate in this nation. We need more tolerance. But it’s not like we can just start deporting Republicans to Russia…no, wait. Can we?

And maybe you need to learn how to tolerate hearing things you don’t like hearing…or seeing. This cartoon was inspired by a photo of a man with a sign protesting against having to see Taylor Swift while he watches football.

Shake it off.

  1. Funny how suddenly it is okay to kill Palestinian citizens, but it’s not okay to take Isreali citizens hostage. This war is not about human life, it is about stealing more territioy from Palestine. In 1947 the Isrealis were given the gift of a home nation. That gift has resulted in more deaths than the Trojan Horse ever cost Troy, and most of those deaths happened to people from Arab nations. The key word being “people!”

  2. Students are, silenced, for, stating what is true, and, we don’t, need any more, wars in the world, but, political parties such as the Republican, and the extreme left, wanted to, keep everything hovered up, and the war ongoing, as wars have a way to, stimulate the, economy, so they try and, silence the, people.

  3. I have read your blog and enjoyed your cartoon …. both excellent but have to be time consuming. The research in the blog and then the detail and ideas in a cartoon with this many characters takes a lot of time and effort. Where you live is there more than 24 hours in a day?
