I know the majority of my readership thinks along the same lines that I do. I know I’m mostly preaching to the choir with my work. I received an angry email from a goon this morning and while it didn’t offer constructive criticism (he told me to swallow a porcupine), it did make me feel good that I’m reaching right-wingers. But most of my readers are on the left which means my cartoons criticizing President Biden don’t get a lot of shares.
Yesterday’s cartoon for CNN that criticized President Biden didn’t get many shares. On Twitter/X, it only got 26 likes while yesterday’s cartoon on If He Wins got 169. But I have noticed a shift.
Shortly after Biden was elected, I would get criticism from my liberal friends for the way I drew him. They’d also be defensive of him and would express displeasure with my criticism. Now, they don’t do that as much, though one of my proofers just messaged to tell me she hates this cartoon and it seems like a “Trumpist talking point.” Ugh. But for the most part, they ignore these cartoons. It’s like the MAGAts after I did the cartoon on Kristi Noem shooting her dog. Instead of defending her, they were mostly silent. That tells you most people, even MAGAts, don’t agree with shooting puppies.
And here, President Biden should be criticized for his policies on Israel and Gaza and for his handling of the college protests.
President Biden loses faith in his leadership when he condemns Israel for dropping bombs on babies, hospitals, schools, homes, journalists, humanitarian aid workers, etc, etc…and then gives them more bombs to drop on babies, hospitals, schools, homes, journalists, humanitarian aid workers, etc, etc.
College students are right to protest, not just Israel’s murdering of around 40,000 civilians in Gaza, but the president’s support of this. President Biden is supporting the murder of civilians in Gaza when he continues to provide the bombs used to kill them. No amount of presidential lip service can bury that fact. President Biden’s lack of leadership on this can lose him the election. Until his comments on the situation last Thursday, he was silent for over a week.
No, these kids won’t vote for Trump but they won’t vote for Biden either.
I still think President Biden is a good president and should be reelected. Donald Trump will be much worse. So much worse. And not voting for President Biden is a defacto vote for Donald Trump, that includes voting for RFK Jr or not voting at all. If you recall, Trump handled anti-racism protests by sending out the military to clear Lafayette Square with teargas so he could stage a photo-op with an upside-down bible.
This is tough politics. If President Biden cuts off aid to Israel, then he won’t get anymore for Ukraine. But we’re giving weapons to Ukraine so they can stop Putin from murdering civilians, which is what Israel is doing with the weapons we give them. It’s a mess and you’re not going to find all the solutions from a cartoonist.
Right now, Biden needs to find a way to stop giving Israel weapons to murder civilians. The difference between Israel and Ukraine is that Israel doesn’t need our help. They can still kill Hamas and civilians without our help.
Biden needs to start being a leader on this now or we’re all going to be hiding in our sofas after this year’s election.
Update: Here are some comments at Gomics on this cartoon from liberals who usually love me.
“While Clay gets it right most of the time, when he errs, it’s often a biggie.”
“Clay – i think you’re jumping the gun on this. “
“Clay swings and misses ….”
“Absolutely biased.”
“Does Clay support the slaughter of innocent Palestinian children?”
“Clay obviously doesn’t watch the evening news.”
“Wow, there, Clay. Did you just switch parties?”
“I guess Clay musta got bored kicking poor mr trump around.”
“This cartoon is disingenuous.”
Keep in mind that two days ago, I was accused of being antisemitic.
Music note: My cousin Byron and his husband Dean are in London right now for the ABBA avatar concert thingy, which inspired me to listen to them while coloring today’s cartoon.

Watch me draw:
Seems this is a ‘toon criticizing Biden for someone else’s irresponsible actions. Overreactions are far more damaging than responsible inaction. Not one of your better efforts–It stinks.

Here’s the thing… So much of politics, especially today, is cynically performative. Politicians will say or do anything they think will get them a few more campaign dollars or maybe a boost in the polls. Actually making adult decisions like leaders are supposed to is way down on their priority list. OK, the ratio of reasonable actions to BS is all over the place. MTG is not the same as Joe Biden in this regard. At all.
I saw this today and it completely soured me.

Oh, that’s disgusting that they’d not support that funding. The bastards. They are just a horrible bunch! :(

Palestinians are being starved to death. Repeat … Palestinians are being starved to death. Men women and children. Casualties in every conflict are innocent civilians.
I don’t care about college protests, i don’t care about America’s propaganda machine. People on this planet are being starved to death and the President of the United States can’t fix it.
This world sucks.
