Parent Of The Year

A Michigan jury held a mother responsible yesterday for a school shooting committed by her son in 2021.

15-year-old Ethan Crumbley was given a gun by his parents which he used to murder four at Oxford High School. His mother, Jennifer Crumbley, was found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter. She can be sentenced to spend up to 15 years in prison.

The Jury’s forewoman told the Detroit Free Press that it was a “hard case and difficult decision” to convict, but that Crumbley’s role as the last adult to possess the murder weapon was a key factor in the panel’s decision.

Ethan pled guilty to the crime which also injured seven others and will spend the rest of his life in prison. His mom took the stand and said she had no regrets about how she parented her son. Crumbley took her son to a gun range at the same time she noted he was “acting depressed” and spent a lot of time alone.

The prosecution used Ethan’s journal as evidence in which he wrote his “parents won’t listen to me about help or a therapist,” and, “Many people have about a day left to live.”

The prosecution claimed Jennifer was more focused on her many multiple extramarital relationships and spent more time on dating apps than with her son who was caught making violent drawings at school. The prosecution said that hours before the shooting, the school urged the Crumbleys to take their son home and get him professional help, which they refused.

Ethan testified that he gave money to his father to purchase the gun, a 9mm Sig Sauer SP, he used in the school shooting, and he was captured on camera practicing with the weapon at a gun range with his mom just days before the mass shooting.

His father, James Crumbley, is facing the same charges as his wife and will have his own trial which is set to start in March.

Last week, Republican senators were holding a hearing about the danger of social media on kids. The same Republicans are silent about guns. For nearly every mass shooting, the gun was purchased legally thanks to Republicans and the National Rifle Association.

If the parents can be held liable for giving their son the gun, then the GOP and NRA should be held liable for making these weapons accessible. Just like the parents, they would rather blow off responsibility for the little monsters they helped create.

  1. It strikes me that Alice Cooper is the most appropriate music to listen to while working on this Graphic Editorial and Blog. 👍

      1. That’s a good one! I also like “I don’t like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats.
Actually, I can imagine that on a sign in the Goldfish Bowl. – I’m not trying to criticize your wonderful cartoon! It’s just my imagination…

The “Murder Death Kill” reference was pretty cool too, by the way. 🙂

  2. The mother was, negligent, sure, but, it was the son who brought the gun to school, and, opened FIRE, but, because he was a, minor, his mother was made to take the, responsibility for his bad behavior, and charged on, manslaughter. I agree that the mother should’ve, paid more attention to the son, but, it was her teenager who woke up and decided, “hey, I’ll grab that gun and open fire in school”, and yet, where’s the punishment for this, “minor”, and, should his, shooting RAMPAGE not, gotten him, TRIED as an, adult??? Because the Congress ia FUNDED by the NRA, that’s why, guns are, so, easily, accessible, because parents are, negilgent, that’s why, their kids gained access to the, firearms, and, opened, FIRE!

    1. Taurusingemini, the son/shooter got life in prison after pleading guilty to killing 4 people and injuring 7 others. The parents had both been called to the school counselor’s office, advised to immediately take their son home and get counseling for their son ASAP because his teacher had found some very concerning notes he’d written, but the parents REFUSED to take him out of school or get help for him. They helped him get the gun, encouraged his enthusiasm for shooting, and ignored his clear signs of mental illness. The dad goes to trial in March. The parents have a LOT of culpability in this instance and, in my opinion, are deserving of punishment. They did a major disservice to their son as well as to the community!

    2. The child asked, begged for help, and was ignored. They refused to take him and get him help after school asked them to. They bought him the gun knowing his mental state wasn’t good. The kid is in jail for life for what he did. Just maybe this would not have happened. This should be a wake-call to parents to PARENT not be their friend, not to ignore them try listening. I raised four two boys and two girls they are all hard-working adults with families of their own they were given responsibilities as soon as they could learn to pick up their toys and put them away. Next came sitting the table, then clearing it, and taking out the trash everyone helped I was a working mother and their father was on active duty for 20 years. They only learn responsibility from the ground up starting young doesn’t hurt them and get them off their damned phones.
