Guns and Prayers

The search for the gunman who killed at least 18 people and injured 13 others in Lewiston, Maine on Wednesday night is still ongoing and there are fears he could become another Eric Rudolph, the white nationalist terrorist who hid for years in the wilderness after bombing the Atlanta Olympics, a lesbian bar, and abortion clinics. Guess which political party aligns with his views. The Maine shooter is a 40-year-old white guy with mental problems and a gun fetish. Golly, I wonder what his political views are.

Authorities will eventually find the Maine mass shooter, hopefully, sooner than later. What they won’t find are any answers and solutions from the Republican Party to stop these murders which for some reason, only happen in the United States. Like the inspiration of today’s cartoon, they will send out “thoughts and prayers” while continuing to glorify guns.

Lauren Boebert inspired this cartoon. Yesterday, she tweeted “thoughts and prayers” to the victims and survivors in Maine. I tweeted a reply to her stating that maybe she should send her Christmas card to them and perhaps that would cheer them up.

A couple years ago, Bobo sent out a Christmas card featuring her and her sons, who were each happily holding assault rifles. This was a thing for Republicans that year, sending out gun-fetish Christmas cards. There’s something seriously fucked up about using Christmas to promote your boner for assault rifles. One congressman made sure his assault rifles were clearly visible during a committee hearing through Zoom during the pandemic. One fucknut gun-humping right-wing racist political cartoonist makes sure one of his assault weapons is visible when he’s a guest on his syndicate’s podcast.

I was thinking about the children who were at the bowling alley where the shooter first attacked. I thought about how they shouldn’t have to live in a nation in fear of being a victim in a mass shooting or even witnessing one. I thought about my own child who’s a grown man now. I thought that if he was born today, instead of 1990 (fuck, I’m old), I would want to move my family out of this nation to someplace more sensible. I would want to raise him in a place more sensible about guns because this nation isn’t it, especially the state where he was mostly raised, Mississippi.

It’s Friday which is my CNN day. I like to focus on that which is why I’ve started drawing my Friday cartoon for my newspaper clients on Thursday nights. I actually started this one pretty late last night, around 11 p.m. I wasn’t sure about it at first because it might be too subtle for some readers (one guy on Twitter is still trying to figure out the ketchup cartoon). Sometimes, the creator can’t tell. But then I decided it says exactly what I wanted it to say. It didn’t need a reference to Maine because I find myself saying the same thing after every mass shooting.

We cartoonists are always trying to find something new to say about the same tragic events which for some reason, only occur here. And I’ll be trying it again on the next one which will be coming very soon.

Music note: I listened to Weezer.

  1. You have two PayPal links below the blog. On both of them, when I click on it, I get a Paypal blank page with “This organization’s page is broken.”

I really like this cartoon. Please do something.

    1. Hi Terry,
Thank you so much for your support. I don’t know how to fix this since they both work for me. I don’t understand why they’re not working for you. Does anyone else reading this have a possible suggestion?
I am sorry for the problem. What you can do in the meantime is go to PayPal and send to my email, clayjonz@gmail.com. Thank you again and sorry for the problem and confusion.

  2. This is so incredibly sad. The numbers of dead and wounded from mass shooters keep going up – there is no way for them to come down, ever! But gunfuckers refuse to change — they can’t live without their weapons of mass destruction!
America, WAKE UP! This is on every American who votes Republican! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY GUN DEATH IN THE USA! Stop voting Republican, because your turn is coming! LIVE BY THE GUN, DIE BY THE GUN!!!!

  3. My children are grown and are now raising their children in this lone wolf, high velocity, lead projectile country. I would have to supplement my old fashioned parenting skills if I were to raise kids today. Teach them about bullet proof vests, gun safety, duck and cover, escape and evade, wound care, proper tourniquet use, the difference between a flesh wound and a deep arterial laceration bullet wound, etc.. you know … primary child rearing for today.

  4. Mad Magazine had this pegged years ago:

However, each mass shooting can have a campaign medal (named after the shooting) under the new program that needs to be developed by Congress. Since Republicans are unable and unwilling to do anything about shootings, they ought to hand out citations and medals like they do in the military for campaigns and battles. Give a Purple Heart and some free tuition (if they believed in education) if they’re wounded in the course of education. Give out posthumous Congressional Medals to those that died in the line of duty, such as students, teachers, and staff who tried to stop the gunman. Create a special cemetery and provide an Honor Guard tailored for the situation where the victims were murdered.

If the US is _so_ determined to water the Tree of Liberty with the blood of patriots, tyrants, kids, teachers, parents, church-goers, shoppers, etc., they may as well treat them like the front-line battlefield casualties who died for the cause of Freedom as any other soldier in any other war.

It could even be capitalized by a new, profitable insurance opportunity. Gunshot victim’s insurance with an additional bonus to the family if you die from the wounds. A must for students and teachers these days! A sense of security at reasonable prices. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there! You’re in good hands with Allstate. The Geico Gecko can hawk insurance wearing body armor and a helmet.
