Israel’s 9/11

I always feel awkward when I draw about conflicts between Israel and Palestinians because I don’t want to endorse terrorists. I want to sympathize with the side that is victimized. In case you haven’t heard, conflicts in the Middle East are complicated. I like to punch up, not down.

I believe Israel’s right-wing government is oppressive to Palestinians. When Trump and Kushner were working with Netanyahu on a “peace” accord, they left the Palestinians out. Even when Trump tried to work out a deal with Afghanistan, he invited the Taliban to the table (and gave them everything). Jared worked out a deal between Israel and Persian Gulf states that were never at war and proclaimed it a peace deal. Now, as the Biden administration is close to working out a normalized relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia, Hamas has attacked civilians in Israel. Hamas is a terrorist group.

I spent a couple of hours drawing a cartoon in the hotel lobby. I was watching all my cartoon friends check out and say goodbye to each other. They didn’t notice me sitting in a corner drawing, or they did and decided to leave me alone because I was drawing. Or, they all hate me. But, after they were all gone and that cartoon was done, I decided I wasn’t confident enough with it so I shelved it. That’s a shame because it looks really good too.

I didn’t want readers to be confused with my cartoon. I can take being yelled at but I don’t know confusion or people mistaking what I’m trying to say. So I decided to do something a little simpler and to the point, and here we are.

Israel is now officially at war. I don’t believe Israel is a purely innocent party in this but Hamas is not attacking Israel because of the shoddy conditions Palestinians live in.

I’m still in San Francisco and will be flying out tomorrow (Monday) night.

  1. I don’t think either side is right or wrong. There is a long history of bad blood on both sides. But to do what Hamas did was very wrong. So now Israel will make Gaza a scorched earth area by leveling the it. This will be a long drawn-out fight.

  2. I listen to the news reports with anguish. But it’s not as if this shouldn’t have been expected. Under the far right government, Israeli soldiers have engaged in inexcusable brutality. Palestinian families were dragged from homes that had been in their families for generations, healthy orchards were set aflame, children… innocent little Palestinian kids were shot for damn sport.
So Hamas attacks and murders Israeli youth at a music festival. Innocent Israeli citizens are kidnapped, homes are turned to rubble. So Netanyahu’s deliberate far right cruelty is met with insane terrorism. And in the Ukraine, where innocent civilians are being bombed into oblivion by Putin’s troops just because he wants their land, the far right in America watch and decide they’d rather sit back and watch rather than help the victims, oblivious to the fact that we’ve already seen this movie, and we know how it ends.

  3. The likes of people like us are not going to solve this conflict. It goes back millennia, and has more legs than a millipede. The best thing that can be done is to mindwipe everyone presently involved and start all over again. Return to Go and start over!

  4. It’s given Israel all the excuse they need to do what they intended to do all along – eliminate the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Perhaps even draw the US into a war with Iran. We’ll see. Been watching cluster**** for fifty years and “defense” contractors make trillions over the same period.
