The Man Wins Again

I’m a little nervous about this cartoon. But I think I’m right to draw it. I hate explaining cartoons in the blog, but I’m going to do that today. I already have people on Facebook screaming at me over this one, and that’s OK.

A lot of people didn’t watch the trial, so I’ll sum up a bit: Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for defamation over an article she wrote in 2018 that was published in The Washington Post. Hmm. I have a cartoon in today’s Post but I wonder if they’ll run this one.

Heard described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in the article. She did not name Depp but he sued her for defamation in a Fairfax County, Virginia court. Heard countersued for defamation for comments Depp’s lawyer made about her.

Depp testified first which built up public support for his side. It seems that most people believe Amber Heard physically abused Johnny Depp. The irony is that his legal team got two weeks to defame Heard in a defamation case. They accused each other of abuse. Depp claimed Heard defecated on their bed and sliced off his fingertip. She accused him of being abusive verbally and physically and also accused him of sexual violence. Their former marriage counselor testified that the pair’s relationship had what she characterized as “mutual abuse.”

This was the worst choosing of sides from the public since Team Edward vs. Team Jacob from those Twilight movies. And just like you’d probably not pick a side in a fight between werewolves and vampires, I didn’t choose a side in this trial. I think they’re both liars and abusers.

Johnny Depp is a bigger star than Amber Heard. He had more celebrities testify on his behalf. Everyone has seen those Pirate of the Caribbean movies. A lot of people have never heard of Amber Heard. The jury sided with Depp but found them both guilty.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. There is a cap of $350,000 for punitive damages in Virginia, so basically, Heard will have to pay Depp $8,350,000. Depp paid Heard $7 million in their divorce settlement in 2016, where she also sought a restraining order. They issued a joint statement at the time admitting their relationship was “volatile.”

I think the jury got it wrong. I don’t think we can tell who was worse than the other and I don’t think the jury can tell either. I personally think they sided with the bigger movie star and the man, which society tends to do. In Hollywood, a male actor can continue being cast as a leading man into his 60s while for women, it’s pretty over at 40 with all that’s left being grandmother roles. Marisa Tomei acted in multiple MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as Spiderman’s Aunt May. Aunt May from the comic books was not someone George Costanza would lust after.

When Rihanna told the public that Chris Brown beat the shit out of her, the public reaction was to vilify her for exposing it, with many believing she brought it on herself. When Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s breast in a wardrobe malfunction during the Superbowl halftime show in 2004, it ruined Jackson’s career. Timberlake has been invited back to perform at the Superbowl. Some states have laws giving rapists visitation rights with the babies that other laws forced their victims to give birth to. It is a man’s world.

I think Depp and Heard are both guilty and they abused each other. It’s a pissing contest between two vile people to see which one is the worst. I’m afraid Depp being the victor here will give comfort not just to men who are victims of spousal abuse, but to men who are the abusers.

It’s estimated that men account for 40 percent of domestic abuse victims. That means women account for 60 percent. But men generally don’t report it out of embarrassment. Women tend not to report it because they won’t be believed. And when a man says she’s abusing me and all her claims are lies, society tends to believe the man.

Instead of creating public awareness of domestic abuse, all this case gave us was a distraction. We got to watch two entitled pampered rich movie stars bicker over who sucks more while outside Hollywood, there are real victims of domestic violence who’ll never receive $10 million as a settlement. I’m more concerned about what abusers will take from this case. I believe male abusers have a new champion.

Don’t take my word for it that society would rather believe the man than the woman. Take it from the jury in Fairfax.

Watch me draw:

  1. Have to disagree.

Heard dared Johnny Depp “to tell the world that he a man was a victim of domestic abuse”… believing he would never do that.

In testimony Heard claimed said she didn’t know how to inform the Media about her intended TRO, about which, under oath, a former employee of TMZ recounted dispatching video and photographers in advance to the exact location specifying what side of her face they were to attempt to photograph, also claimed no knowledge of the videotape she made of Depp smashing things in the kitchen; which was displayed by TMZ. _Legally they couldn’t do that if they didn’t own the copyright_ *which they had to obtain from the owner [her]*.

AND she also claimed many times although “she didn’t know anything about contacting media _she could’ve done much worse if she chose_.”

Those statements can’t both be true.

She was the one who obtained the TRO before her divorce and then _visited Depp twice_ breaking it. That doesn’t seem to be the actions of someone who is afraid of an abuser to me; what about you?

_An actress who makes millions with her face_ swore “she believed she had her nose broken twice and possibly suffered a concussion”_ but never sought any medical
    confirmation or treatment_?

Again seems very strange to me. In many other past cases when there’s broken bones an abuse a victim will, out of necessity, contrive a plausible story possibility about falling downstairs but _they do go and seek help_, have x-rays and have medical records.

    None existed in her case.

There were several other glaring inconsistencies like Heard’s own vocabulary equating the words “donated” and “pledge”, the meaning of “punch” vs. “hit” among just a few.

So are they both narcissistic? Possibly. Did they both say terrible things about each other? Yes

The jury believed Heard knowing lied with intent several times and that Depp’s lawyer spoke out for him- of *the three defamatory claims Heard alleged* the jury found two to believable and not defamation.

My question is again after claiming “only to want to put this behind her and get on with her life” she’s now talking about an appeal and going through all this again?

It’s quite obvious most people viewing found she, as with a former defeated president lies so often you can’t put any faith in the words which come out of her mouth.

  2. It is unfortunate time and lots of space is being wasted on the results of this trial. But I guess it is a distraction from the war in Ukraine, from the Uvalde school shootings, from the economy, from the man-caused “natural” disasters happening around the globe, from Covid, and from all the really important thing in life. Yeah, I understand our psyches need disteactions or we will all go crazy. But THIS DISTRACTION is not a worthy distraction.
Any bets how how soon it will be made into a movie, and the winners will be the movie producers? No one will make a movie about Uvalde! Noone ever made a movie about Sandy Hook! If they make a movie about the war in Ukraine it won’t be till at least Ten Years After. Depp-Heard, 9 months tops!

  3. There is a war in Ukraine, a vicious, murdering mental case dictator (Putin) with nuclear weapons that threatens the world daily, an 18-year-old murdering fourth graders in texas, climate change threatening the survival of man but more important it threatens plants and animals (which would do much better without humans and the latest model corvette and Maserati). Depp and Heard … didn’t watch it, didn’t keep up with it, Wasn’t interested in another celebrity he-said -she-said non drama. But tabloid gossip sells…I would rather enjoy seclusion, camping and peace of mind. heading there now!

    1. “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.”

Far too many Americans spend their entire lives in a state of ignorant bliss.

      1. Are you implying one is blissfully ignorant for not watching Johnny Depp and Amber Heard air their marital dirty laundry in public? I have better things to do with my time than follow trash tabloid celebrity gossip. But if your addiction is watching TMZ and following Hollywood lifestyles of the rich and famous … you go for it. Depp/Heard is same old story with different actors. Seen it once, you have seen it a thousand times. Nothing gained by watching, only precious time is lost. Time is important to me now … have none to waste following celebrity dysfunction.

      2. Back from camping? Or commenting from there ?

YOU concluded with “ …I would rather enjoy seclusion, camping and peace of mind. heading there now!”

      3. People can camp and rekindle the spirit without being blissfully ignorant. Nothing wrong with taking a break from the insanity of today’s rat race. TMZ, boob tube, celebrity voyeurism (Depp/Heard) is blissful ignorance in my humble opinion. You have a nice day.

  4. I think that saying, ‘The man wins again’ is as much a knee-jerk reaction as saying, ‘Oh, she’s just lying.” Each comment is unfair to the gender it is used against.

Johnny Depp ‘won’ (albeit a pyrrhic victory, IMO) NOT because he’s a man. NOT because he’s a famous movie star. NOT because he had better lawyers. NOT because he has so many fans.

Johnny Depp ‘won’ because Amber Heard lied. Not once, not twice, but many times. Plain and simple: If you lie about one thing, you’re probably lying about others.

She has done a great disfavor to the ACLU, and to her gender.

  5. Don’t let this divisive shenanigans rile you, men and women are harmonious until you listen to the news, social media trending or lend this bizarre sideshow your mindspace. The entire thing is fake and the weirdness doesn’t end there. She is in a 1999 Depp movie as a she devil having intercourse with Depp. Yup, Heards image or one that is a 90% facial match is in The Ninth Gate…why???

  6. Thank you for speaking up even through the choruses that are telling you to pipe down, insisting that they know best what you “should” be focusing on. This miserable case IS important- it is already having a chilling effect on domestic violence survivors, who are now freshly inundated with proof that they will be vilified for telling their stories.

I think your cartoon captures the dynamic perfectly.
