War On Women

The Man Wins Again

I’m a little nervous about this cartoon. But I think I’m right to draw it. I hate explaining cartoons in the blog, but I’m going to do that today. I already have people on Facebook screaming at me over this one, and that’s OK.

A lot of people didn’t watch the trial, so I’ll sum up a bit: Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for defamation over an article she wrote in 2018 that was published in The Washington Post. Hmm. I have a cartoon in today’s Post but I wonder if they’ll run this one.

Heard described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in the article. She did not name Depp but he sued her for defamation in a Fairfax County, Virginia court. Heard countersued for defamation for comments Depp’s lawyer made about her.

Depp testified first which built up public support for his side. It seems that most people believe Amber Heard physically abused Johnny Depp. The irony is that his legal team got two weeks to defame Heard in a defamation case. They accused each other of abuse. Depp claimed Heard defecated on their bed and sliced off his fingertip. She accused him of being abusive verbally and physically and also accused him of sexual violence. Their former marriage counselor testified that the pair’s relationship had what she characterized as “mutual abuse.”

This was the worst choosing of sides from the public since Team Edward vs. Team Jacob from those Twilight movies. And just like you’d probably not pick a side in a fight between werewolves and vampires, I didn’t choose a side in this trial. I think they’re both liars and abusers.

Johnny Depp is a bigger star than Amber Heard. He had more celebrities testify on his behalf. Everyone has seen those Pirate of the Caribbean movies. A lot of people have never heard of Amber Heard. The jury sided with Depp but found them both guilty.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. There is a cap of $350,000 for punitive damages in Virginia, so basically, Heard will have to pay Depp $8,350,000. Depp paid Heard $7 million in their divorce settlement in 2016, where she also sought a restraining order. They issued a joint statement at the time admitting their relationship was “volatile.”

I think the jury got it wrong. I don’t think we can tell who was worse than the other and I don’t think the jury can tell either. I personally think they sided with the bigger movie star and the man, which society tends to do. In Hollywood, a male actor can continue being cast as a leading man into his 60s while for women, it’s pretty over at 40 with all that’s left being grandmother roles. Marisa Tomei acted in multiple MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as Spiderman’s Aunt May. Aunt May from the comic books was not someone George Costanza would lust after.

When Rihanna told the public that Chris Brown beat the shit out of her, the public reaction was to vilify her for exposing it, with many believing she brought it on herself. When Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s breast in a wardrobe malfunction during the Superbowl halftime show in 2004, it ruined Jackson’s career. Timberlake has been invited back to perform at the Superbowl. Some states have laws giving rapists visitation rights with the babies that other laws forced their victims to give birth to. It is a man’s world.

I think Depp and Heard are both guilty and they abused each other. It’s a pissing contest between two vile people to see which one is the worst. I’m afraid Depp being the victor here will give comfort not just to men who are victims of spousal abuse, but to men who are the abusers.

It’s estimated that men account for 40 percent of domestic abuse victims. That means women account for 60 percent. But men generally don’t report it out of embarrassment. Women tend not to report it because they won’t be believed. And when a man says she’s abusing me and all her claims are lies, society tends to believe the man.

Instead of creating public awareness of domestic abuse, all this case gave us was a distraction. We got to watch two entitled pampered rich movie stars bicker over who sucks more while outside Hollywood, there are real victims of domestic violence who’ll never receive $10 million as a settlement. I’m more concerned about what abusers will take from this case. I believe male abusers have a new champion.

Don’t take my word for it that society would rather believe the man than the woman. Take it from the jury in Fairfax.

Domestic Infant Supply

What was leaked out of the Supreme Court last week was a draft and not the final written opinion for the majority. Chief Justice John Roberts has confirmed its authenticity but has declared this isn’t actually the final vote, though it is. But, I’m sure the draft will change because what we saw from the leak is a rough draft before someone was able to tell Justice Samuel Alito not to say the quiet part out loud.

I’m sure at some point, a law clerk would have suggested they remove the line about women being cattle.

At first, I thought this was some social media meme propaganda. Liberals do that stuff too which really pisses me off because we don’t have to make shit up to fight Republicans. They give us all the facts we need. And it sounded so ridiculous that I immediately smelled bullshit. A Supreme Court Justice wouldn’t really write a line in a legal opinion that views women as cattle. But, this is true. I fact-checked this and yes, the brief has a line about “domestic infant supply.”

On page 34 of the 98-page draft of the majority opinion, Alito wrote, ““Nearly 1 million women were seeking to adopt children in 2002, whereas the domestic supply of infants relinquished at birth or within the first month of life and available to adopt had become virtually nonexistent.”

I don’t know where to start with this. Oh, wait. Yes, I do. Bullshit!

It doesn’t matter if there’s a dropoff of “infants” available to adopt to justify stripping away a constitutional right women have had for the past 48 years. The reads like the majority views women as cattle who should be used as birthing boxes for people who can’t have their own children. It reads like women should be used to create an inventory for Babies-R-Us.

During oral arguments on this same case, Amy Coney Barrett said she “might not be inclined to protect a woman’s right to an abortion,” since adoption is an option. This isn’t less of a legal opinion and more of a moral one from someone who doesn’t have morals. I don’t care if you are a Supreme Court Justice, it’s not your place to make those decisions for other people. Yet, that’s what they’re going to do.

Justice Barrett, just because you had seven kids doesn’t mean every woman in the nation should be forced to have seven kids. The seven kids thing is scary as it gives me the impression Barrett, who plans to force others to live by her morals, is also opposed to birth control.

The majority of the Supremes, not the cool ones who sing “Baby Love,” are justifying destroying a constitutional right on religious zealotry, not the law.

Justice Clarence Thomas said Friday that the court can’t “give you only the outcome you want,” or be “bullied,” echoing a line in the draft opinion that says the court shouldn’t let society’s opinion impact their decision. This motherfucker’s wife helped plan the insurrection after voters didn’t give Republicans the outcome they wanted. Obviously, the Thomases don’t believe society’s opinion (votes) should impact who they want for president…or dictator.

What should be unconstitutional is five uptight fuckwads with sticks up their butts forcing America’s women to become baby factories. Hell, it sounds like Amy Coney Barrett is a baby factory all by herself, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the women in this nation should be forced to be breeders.

Liberals often argue that if Republicans really want to decrease pregnancies, then men should be forced to have vasectomies since they’re reversible. But they don’t want to decrease pregnancies. That’s not the business. Do you really believe the majority of the court wants to reduce rapes when one of them has been accused of attempting rape?

But the truth is, there are plenty of children available for adoption. What the Supremes want are more options, more selections, more choices. Can’t find the kid you want to adopt? Then maybe we can have one made for you. What do you want in an adopted infant? Blonde hair, blue eyes, light skin…oh, are you OK if they come with a tail and flippers? Yeah, there’s gonna be those since we’re forcing girls to give birth to their uncles’, brothers’, and daddies’ babies. In a lot of states, they want to force the birth of the infant even if the doctor knows the baby can’t survive outside the womb.

And for the infants who can’t be adopted by the perfect white families, fuck those infants. Republicans have spent the past 48 years trying to force women to have babies that Republicans have made no plans for. Republicans’ concern for the unborn stop after they’re born. They oppose every public effort to house, feed, educate or provide healthcare for poor children.

How in the hell can you be the party that wants to force more poor people to create humans while also opposing social welfare? You want to force poor women to have babies while gutting the schools those children will attend where you have taken away their lunch.

This has nothing to do about caring for children and has everything to do with religious zealotry. These Republicans want women to be cattle. Just because Amy Coney Barrett thinks she’s a cow doesn’t mean other women should be treated that way.

Women, if you don’t want to be herded by Republicans, vote in November because Mitch McConnell is also saying the quiet part out loud. While the Supreme Court says this is about states’ rights, McTurtle has already talked about making a federal law banning abortion nationwide.

Keeping Republicans from taking the House and Senate in November may be our last opportunity to save women’s rights.

Yee-Hawing For Nassar

Cjones09192021

Testifying before Congress, one of Larry Nassar’s victims described him as more of a pedophile than a doctor. Since the FBI helped cover it up, what does that make them? One of his victims testified that an FBI agent tried to convince her that being raped wasn’t a big deal. Was that FBI agent from Texas?

The next question here is: When will criminal charges be filed against FBI agents?

Sorry, I don’t have time for a real long juicy blog today. I have another deadline and I’m really stressed out. Weep for me.

No Wiggle Room For Women

cjones05222019

Renting a moving truck from U-Haul to go from Alabama to Connecticut will cost somewhere between $600 to $800, depending on the size truck you need. Why did I look this information up? Because, if you’re in Alabama, you need to get out. As a public service, I’m giving you an idea on the cost.

Why did I pick Connecticut? Because some state officials in Connecticut have offered safe haven to Alabamians who wish to escape their state’s new restrictive abortion laws. Though the law isn’t actually legal yet despite the governor signing it, Alabama seeks to become the most restrictive state in regards to abortion. Connecticut, which has codified abortion, is the most progressive on the subject. Alabama wants to ban abortion entirely, even in the case of rape and incest. If this law becomes an actual law, a woman in Alabama impregnated from rape could face a stiffer prison sentence than her attacker.

But, if you’re from Alabama, even if you’re progressive, you’re probably not going to like Connecticut. It’s expensive and you’ll think Yankees talk funny. It’s also close to Boston, so you’ve been warned.

I do find the invitation extended to Alabamians from Connecticut ridiculous. Even though it seems like it’s Alabamistan, it’s not a foreign country. Alabama is in the same nation as Connecticut. You don’t need an invitation. You’re free to move about the country as you wish. So, if you want to escape Alabama, and I recommend that you do, you can choose whichever state you want. However, there are several states to avoid as they seek to legislate their religion to create women-punishing laws nearly as strict as Alabama’s. Which ones are they? Glad you asked because here we go.

Don’t go to Georgia. It’s a beautiful place and I lived there for three years when I was a teenager. I even went to high school with Amy Carter, daughter of former president Jimmy Carter. They have pecans, peaches, lots of red clay, and the Georgia Bulldogs. It was the home to Martin Luther King Jr. and is the base for Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a friend of mine and one of the nation’s best political cartoonists. But, in addition to banning abortions after six weeks, the state also suppresses votes from African-Americans. Don’t go to Georgia.

Missouri. They just passed a bill that bans abortions after a heartbeat is detected, and it allows exceptions for medical emergencies but not for pregnancies caused by rape or incest. Plus, it’s Missouri.

Ohio. Another one of those “heartbeat” bills and the governor signed it. On top of that, Cleveland is in Ohio.

Mississippi. I started my career in the state and lived in Batesville, Brookhaven, Gulfport, and Jackson. The state has given us some of America’s greatest authors from Eudora Welty (my college was across the street from her house. I never saw her), Willie Morris, John Grisham, and of course, William Faulkner. They have the best barbecue and a new abortion bill that they call, wait for it…the “heartbeat” bill.

Kentucky. Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell (yet, they shoot lame race horses) and…you guessed it, a “heartbeat” bill. Don’t go to Kentucky.

Louisiana, where I spent the majority of my youth against my will. “Heartbeat” bill.

I’ll just mention the rest for the sake of brevity. Texas, Utah, West Virginia, South Carolina, Iowa, and Florida. Basically, avoid any state that voted for Trump.

Today, a trial is set to begin in a lawsuit filed by women’s health groups seeking to overturn restrictions on abortion providers in Virginia, my state. One of those restrictions is that a woman must get an ultrasound before an abortion. I’m surprised they don’t make her name the fetus first.

These laws are not about life. They’re about control and religious fundamentalism. The governor of Alabama made that clear when she said the law “stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.” These people don’t even believe in separation of church and state. They don’t believe in the Constitution. These lawmakers are pushing the issue hoping their state is the one that finally gets the Supreme Court to strike down Roe v. Wade.

This is a war on women. Make no mistake about it. If they actually succeed in banning abortion nationwide, what will they go after next? Remember how elections have consequences? Two of those consequences are named “Neil Gorsuch” and “Brett Kavanaugh.” Liberals need to vote with SCOTUS in mind, just like conservatives do.

If conservatives, Republicans, religious yahoos, and Trump cultists get their way, moving to Connecticut or any progressive state won’t be an escape for anyone. It’s time to stop running. It’s time to take a stand. We have to stop allowing these people from legislating their morality onto the rest of us.

Chains or change. It’s up to you.

Accusers Get Verified

cjones10172016

Donald Trump brought his locker room talk to his rallies this week.

First he called his accusers “horrible,” “sick” and “phony,” and then he insinuated they’re not attractive enough for him to violate. What a moral and upstanding defense.

Regarding Jessica Leeds, who has accused Trump of groping her on a flight, he said “Yeah, I’m gonna go after — believe me, she would not be my first choice, that I can tell you.” Good to know he has a violation-worthy  grading scale.

Trump also called another accuser, former People Magazine reporter Natasha Stoynoff, a “liar” and added, “Check out her Facebook, you’ll understand.” The crowd really liked that one and they laughed and laughed. She’s not pretty enough for…haha. Get it?

Since he was on a roll insulting women for their physical appearance he couldn’t leave out Hillary Clinton. Speaking of last Sunday’s debate, he said “and when she walked in front of me, believe me, I wasn’t impressed.”

I totally understand women like Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama aren’t Trump’s type. They’re Yale and Harvard educated. He’s not in their league. But since we’re out there insulting women’s looks let’s fully punch that ticket on the crazy train and create a conspiracy theory. Choo! Choo!

Trump has decided that all these accusations are being masterminded by a Mexican billionaire who pulled out of a deal with Trump after the GOP nominee said “Mexico sends us rapists and murderers.”

Carlos Slim is one of the richest men in the world. He is so rich that Trump’s income is as comparable to his as mine is to Trump’s. You do not want the income of an unemployed cartoonist (Seriously, somebody bring me a sandwich).

They say that Mr. Slim is so rich and owns so many companies that you can’t go a day in Mexico without contributing to his wealth. Trump, who may not even be a billionaire, has to hate that. It’s probably why he has to put his name on everything. Though a “Slim” casino may not be very enticing.

Slim is a contributor to the Clinton Foundation (Sniff. Sniff. Conspiracy). One of the properties Mr. Slim has a stake in is The New York Times (why am I not in on this conspiracy and getting some of that Mexican billionaire money?). He is the largest private shareholder with 17%. Being a shareholder doesn’t mean you write the headlines but Trump swears there’s a conspiracy anyway. Never mind the fact that other accusers have been revealed by The Washington Post, People Magazine, The Palm Beach Post, and a few TV stations, that Slim Richy does not have any financial stake in (I had to play off “Slim Shady” somewhere in this post).

Trump really hates the idea that a Mexican (of Lebanese descent which probably makes it worse) is meddling in a U.S. election. Dammit, that’s for the Russians to do. He also blamed the “global business elite” and bankers. You know, Jews. Wink. Wink. Nudgy. Nudgy. If there was truly a global financial conspiracy against someone, wouldn’t Trump have gotten the invite? The guy hasn’t been living in cardboard boxes.

Getting back to the whole accused-for-sexual-harassment thing, Trump said anybody can be accused. Just like that time he told his supporters that if they punched a protester at one of his rallies that he’d pay for it, Trump said “even Obama can be accused by anybody.” Then he repeated “anybody.” Yes, anyone at all. Just about any ole little body. Just one person…who might need a tiny little push. A push by tiny little Cheeto fingers.

The problem with finding somebody to accuse the president is that he’s not a jerk like Trump. Not to mention if there was an angry female out who was groped by Obama then wouldn’t they have found her while they were hunting for that pesky birth certificate?

But Trump is big on degrading women. He wails about the injustice received by Bill Clinton’s accusers, then he trops them out for a sideshow photo-op. He’s gone on Howard Stern in the past and graded them with numbers while saying a “flat-chested woman can never be a ten.” That’s another thing guys stop doing after college. The score thing, yeah we don’t do that. Trump still does. We also don’t check out ten-year-old girls on escalators and say I’m gonna be dating her in a few years.” Yeah. Trump does that too.

Trump is so stupid he doesn’t understand how his latest defense doesn’t work. If someone’s not attractive enough for him to harass does that mean he does harass them when they do meet his neanderthal standards?

I’m gonna go with “Yep!”.

I had fun with this cartoon as all the terms here made me giggle. They’re really stupid. Stupid can be funny, like Donald Trump. “Eye Broccoli” was new to me as I had never heard that one before (I research stuff). And obviously I took “man hands” from Seinfeld. I do feel a little self-conscience since I’ve done so many Trump cartoons this week. I wanted to compare with a few other cartoonists so I counted how many Trump cartoons in a row three of my colleagues, who are also my favorites, had drawn. One of them had done four. Another had done five. And one of them has, at this point, done fourteen.

Fourteen. So leave me alone about drawing too many Trump cartoons.

Snake On A Plane

cjones09282016

Donald Trump is a pig and a bore.

During the debate Hillary Clinton brought up Trump’s derogatory comments toward women in the past.

After Alicia Machado won Trump’s 1996 Miss Universe pageant  Trump engaged in a shaming campaign against her. He was disappointed in her weight gain and referred to her as “Miss Piggy” and since she was Latina he called her “Miss Housekeeping.” He used her in promotions by making her exercise in front of the media and remarked “This is somebody who likes to eat.”

The morning after the debate Trump called in on Fox And Friends and defended his sexism by saying “She was the worst we ever had, the worst, the absolute worst. She was impossible. … And she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.”

We were reminded of his comments regarding Rosie O’Donnell during the debate. In the past he referred to her as a pig and at the debate he said she deserved it and nobody felt sorry for her. I’m sure a lot of wife beaters have used the exact same defense. Trump has also called O’Donnell a “slob” with a “fat ugly face.” For a guy who’ll never be nicknamed “Bones,”  “Sticks,”  or “Slim Shady” Trump sure has weight issues.

He’s denied ever saying pregnancy is an inconvenience for businesses but he’s on tape saying it.

Donald Trump focuses more on his insecurities than he does on the details for the job he’s auditioning for. Not only do I not want the guy in the Oval Office, I wouldn’t want him in my car pool.

Trump’s ego got in his way at the debate which he didn’t prepare for and whined that it was unfair that Hillary Clinton was prepared. Hey, you got the same homework. One of you did it and the other spent his time holding rallies to feed his ego. I’m sure Trump paid “nerds” to do his homework in college and it’s too bad for him that he can’t outsource his debate.

Despite flailing like a sobbing, sniffling child Monday night Trump bragged about the polls that showed him winning the debate. Of course these polls were online polls where the voters can vote, refresh, vote, refresh, vote, refresh, etc. Breitbart is a dandy place to take the pulse of the nation, and yet he still only scored 80%. Perhaps he can get a letter from his doctor that declares his victory.

Trump wouldn’t be complete without the sexism to accompany his bigotry, racism, and all-out hatred.

Would you give an important job to someone with a “no fat chicks” sticker? Then why make him president? There’s a proverbial button in the White House and I don’t want Trump’s fat finger on it.

Enabler

cjones05112016

Just in case anyone doesn’t believe Donald Trump is a truly horrible, hideous, impersonation of a human being, he’s taken to blaming Hillary Clinton for her husband’s infidelity. At a rally Trump accused Hillary Clinton of trying to “destroy the lives” of her husband’s accusers. “She was an unbelievably nasty, mean enabler, and what she did to a lot of those women is disgraceful,” he said. Of course he didn’t offer any evidence.

Where would someone get the impression that Hillary Clinton tried to destroy the lives of her husband’s accusers? From the accusers of course.

I’m not a fan of attempting to discredit those who claim sexual harassment, abuse, and rape. I support investigating the charges. But when those making the accusations are selling books, interviews and nude layouts, well…let’s take a look at these accusers attacking Hillary.

Gennifer Flowers has made the claim that Hillary enabled Bill. Flowers definitely had an affair with Clinton but can’t offer any evidence that Hillary was aware of the affair, or attempted to destroy her. Floweres profited from the affair, selling the story to Penthouse (along with a nude pictorial) and the tabloid Star Magazine. She also did the talk show circuit, wrote an autobiography, and starred in two movies and a TV show. She even put the answering machine tapes she claimed were from Bill Clinton up for auction. So hey, it’s not like there’s anything to gain and her word should totally be trusted, right?

Kathleen Willey claims Bill Clinton sexually assaulted her and that Hillary, wait for it, enabled it. That’s a very serious charge not to be taken lightly. After the alleged assault took place Willey sent 15 letters and 12 phone messages for President Clinton requesting further contact. Since then Willey also wrote a book about her and the president. Today Willey is the paid spokeswoman of an organization formed by Trump’s close friend and political adviser, Roger Stone, called Rape Pac, but it was formerly titled “Women Against Hillary.” Willey sounds credible to me (insert eye roll).

Juanita Broaddrick claims she was raped by Clinton. Guess who she says enabled that. Guess who Broaddrick is actively campaigning for? I’ll give you a hint: He has his own helicopter with his name on it, but he doesn’t sell steaks.

Paula Jones claims Clinton sexually harassed her while he was governor of Arkansas and that Hillary enabled it. She sued Clinton over it and and eventually settled out of court, after it was dismissed when Jones failed to demonstrate any damages. Later a donor paid for her to get rhinoplasty and she posed for Penthouse Magazine. She’s a vocal supporter of Donald Trump and even took a selfie with him.

What about Monica Lewinsky. She’s not campaigning for Trump and hasn’t done any nude layouts. I haven’t seen any evidence of her campaigning against Hillary. She avoided talking about her affair with Clinton for over a decade. She actually tried to hide from the public and when she finally wrote about it, for Vanity Fair, her article was more about the aftermath of the scandal and the bullying and public shaming she received. Regarding Hillary, Lewinsky wrote “I find her impulse to blame the Woman – not only me, but herself – troubling.” That doesn’t sound so much like attempting to destroy someone as much as it is about blaming. But let’s see, sleep with a man and his wife doesn’t have nice things to say about you. Go figure. You’d think Hillary would be buying her handbags.

Being betrayed can mentally abuse a person. They may lash out and even blame themselves. For another individual, an outsider, to blame the spouse is heartless and inhumane. Attempting to benefit politically is disgusting.

I suppose if the extent of your tax plan is “I’m going to tax the rich and they’ll pay much less money” then I suppose you’re going to state a lot of crap to distract. I mean, what if someone asked Trump about something specific? Even worse, what if someone asks the Donald about his own infidelities?

The Republican War On Women continues.

Planned Targeting

cjones01272016

The Center For Medical Progress created a sting operation and videos as bogus as their name. Their accusations that Planned Parenthood was selling and profiting from body parts of aborted children turned out to be a total lie and cleared by eleven state investigations. A Houston grand jury was the latest investigation and instead of delivering indictments on Planned Parenthood, they dished them out to David Daleiden, the head of the faker organization, and one of his colleagues, Sandra Merritt, on a felony charge for using fake driver’s licenses to gain access to a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas. Daleiden was also indicted on a misdemeanor count related to purchasing human organs; Planned Parenthood says it turned down an “astronomical amount” offered by Daleiden to procure fetal organs.

Karma.

Daleiden uses the defense that he uses the same tactics as journalists. Wrong. Journalism is not about presenting misinformation, no matter what the right wing believes (except on Fox News. There it will get you your own show). It’s also not about activism.

Daleiden’s agenda is to destroy Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately for him Planned Parenthood is operating within the law so to turn public opinion away from supporting the PP, he made stuff up. The majority of Americans support government funding for PP. If you’re a realist, even if you’re anti-choice, you would realize that PP actually decreases the amount of abortions in this country.

If you’re right and your argument is just and valid, then you shouldn’t have to lie. That’s the journalism part Daleiden doesn’t understand. If he gets locked up then he’ll plenty of time to think about it. Maybe he can share a cell with the guy who was so inspired by his videos that he shot up a clinic in Colorado.

Despite the indictments and the many investigations that have cleared PP, several presidential candidates are continuing with the lie. The most egregious being Carly Fiorina (who lies about EVERYTHING) and abducted children for an anti-choice speech and photo-op. Joining her in the lying liars club is Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, and Ted Cruz. Maybe Planned Parenthood will look into suing these people for slander and defamation. I think they have a case.
