  1. I live in Spain. For the first time since moving here (hace 12 años) I have been confronted for being an American. Since I have known, followed and not hidden my disdain for the decline of the US (with a touch of schadenfreude) I was taken aback by the vitriol. The attack felt personal. People here are disgusted. Those of my generation KNOW about fascism (although a very few look back at Franco approvingly.) I guess I saw it coming, but was too optimistic. Sad.

Listening to Eels. Pretty good. I like the guy. Better than Trent Reznor.

    1. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing that! I hope that you’re safe and that things ease up for you soon. That surprises me, since you’ve been there so long. Geez, what does it take to blend in? Are you wearing a MAGA hat and not telling us about it?? LOL!

  2. I am seriously going to put the kibosh on any kind of international travel for the next four years, and possibly longer. Personally, I don’t care for travel at all (such a PITA; gimme my Star Trek transporter and someone who will pack all my crap!). My husband, on the other hand . . . has been wanting to start doing some regular European travel for years. We went on a cruise to Norway several months ago, hoping to see the Northern Lights. Do ya think there actually *were* Northern Lights during the two weeks we were cruising? (I already knew there was just a 50-50 possibility.) None at all. So *where* did the Northern Lights happen to light up the skies during that time? Flippin’ north America . . . go figure. I didn’t care for the overall experience, but husband loved it. Anyway, I am petrified of the potential for run-ins with strangers over our nationality. Might be nothing really, but there’s a high chance nowadays, IMO, for any number of worse situations developing for Americans while abroad. If husband wants to go somewhere anyway, he can jolly well arrange an excursion with his siblings.

And yes . . . nowadays it’s just as dangerous to walk out your front door in ‘Murica, but I’d rather be on home turf if something happens than being stranded anywhere else.

    1. I’ve lived in Europe for over thirty years. It’s (even today with anti-American sentiments being expressed) much safer here than in the States. And, if attacked, your medical care will be free! There are better reasons to limit frivolous travel, carbon footprint being of primary concern. In English speaking countries you will most likely be identifiable as a Yank, but in many places where English is a second or third (or fourth) language, if you don’t have to show your passport, most Americans can pass easily as Canadian, provided you say “sorry” excessively.
