New York Survey

This was drawn for the Highland Current in Cold Spring, New York.

I used to draw cartoons for the Current sporadically, and I even won first place in the National Newspaper Association’s journalism contest for a cartoon I drew for them. But it had been a few years since they asked me to do something for them. I’m glad they called because I’ve always enjoyed drawing for them. They’re a great publication for their community. They’re good people too and even paid for the cartoon before they published it. Who does that any more?

What I really like about this cartoon is that it’s very local. Of course, I don’t live in the area but I read an article on the issue and the editor had me make a couple of changes that really localized it. I think readers outside the area outside the area may still get the cartoon while not knowing the particular details that are in each speech balloon.

Local cartoons are often the most powerful and impactful in political cartooning, and there are hardly any being drawn today. I miss doing them more consistently and this week, I had two published.

  2. I lived in Cold Spring for about 8 months (1970-71). There was no there there. Growing up in the city, it felt extremely isolated. Moved back to the city and worked at Shakespeare in the Park for the summer, then moved to California.
