Protest Vote

There’s been an option on a lot of ballots in the Democratic primary that allows voters to not choose a candidate and vote “uncommitted” or “no preference.” A lot of Democratic voters are using this to lodge protest votes against President Biden for his policies on the war in Gaza.

Before you launch into a conspiracy theory that these are Republicans crossing over to hurt Biden, I don’t think so. They were too busy trying to hurt Nikki Haley.

The protest vote has been Biden’s biggest opponent garnering over eight percent in Colorado, over nine percent in Massachusetts, over seven percent in Tennessee, over 12 percent in North Carolina, over 13 percent in Michigan, and over 18 percent in Minnesota. Those last two states have large Muslim populations.

Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips, who’s from Minnesota and dropped out of the race the morning after Super Tuesday, got fewer votes than uncommitted.

The Democratic Socialists of America, the nation’s largest socialist group, endorsed “uncommitted” and stated on X/Twitter, “Until this administration ends its support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and delivers a permanent, lasting ceasefire, will bear the responsibility for another Trump presidency.”

No, President Biden will not bear the responsibility of another Trump administration, the “uncommitted” voters will. Just as Jill Stein received support from Russia in the 2016 election to hurt Hillary Clinton, you can bet Putin will launch an effort to support “uncommitted” in the general election.

I get that voters don’t like the war in Gaza and are standing up for Palestinian civilians. More civilians have died than have members of Hamas. The president has spoken out against Israel targeting civilians while helping provide weapons to Israel. I get the hypocrisy and I too want a ceasefire. The president and vice-president Kamala Harris have both called for a ceasefire. But are you using your votes wisely?

I get that you want to save Gaza, but I think it’s more important to save America. Our nation is under attack. Democracy is under attack. Donald Trump is threatening to destroy this nation plus, how much support do you think Gaza will get from a Trump administration? Don’t forget that Trump shut out the Palestinians and only listened to the hardline right-wing government of Netanyahu during his presidency (sic). Trump slapped Palestinians across the face when he recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Many of the votes for “uncommitted” are coming from the youth, so maybe they don’t fully remember just how bad it was under the Trump administration. Here, I’ll remind you. It was bad. A second one will be worse.

If you don’t like President Biden’s policies toward Gaza, then you’re really going to hate President (sic) Trump’s Muslim ban.

  1. Come election day most of these voters will commit. Right now they are sending a clear message when it can do no harm. And I don’t think it is only brown people doing this. Many whites, blacks, reds and yellows want Biden to know he needs to stand on obe side or the other. A President cannot sit on the fence when people are being killed!
This is why it is called a “Protest Vote”!

  2. I think it is silly for voters to assume Americans can deliver/decree? a cease fire in the Hamas/Israeli war. They can only help negotiate and encourage. Considering that the question of a Palestinian state has lanquished for decades I see little hope for the cease fire.

    Call me a pessimist.
