Ridin’ With Biden

After an Iranian proxy group killed three U.S. service members in Jordan, one of the groups (Yes, there are many) said it would cease attacks against the United States in the region. I think these groups may be doing what we’re doing now. They were trying to hit us but not really hit us, at least not to the point that it took lives. There have been over 170 attacks against U.S. assets in the Middle East, not counting the attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. As soon as the attacks took U.S. lives, Iran jumped up and declared it didn’t want a conflict with us…and they always want a conflict with us.

It would seem Iran is more afraid of us with Biden than they were with Trump.

The current conflict arose after Hamas attacked Israel. Iran and their proxies are angry with the U.S. for supporting Israel. The entire region has always been unstable but it got worse after Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and he ordered the assassination of an Iranian general in Iraq. Just like we’re still cleaning up Trump’s mess domestically (this economy didn’t go bad because Biden was elected), we’re still cleaning up Trump’s fuckery internationally.

President Biden ordered strikes on 81 targets in Iraq and Syria last night, and there are more to come. But he’s not striking targets inside Iran. He’s trying to play it smart by sending Iran a message without actually hitting Iran. And honestly, what does Iran care if we kill their proxies? To them, it’s better than hitting Iranians and this is one of the reasons they use proxies.

President Biden has to be careful not to escalate war in the Middle East. He also has to be careful domestically but he’s already triggering responses from liberals who say he’s waging war and Republicans who say he’s not waging it enough, or soon enough. If you’re between Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and John Bolton in matters like this, then you’re probably doing it correctly.

I’m as liberal as they come but let me tell my fellow liberals this, and Republicans should listen as well: We can’t allow terrorists and rogue nations to murder Americans without a response. While I don’t want to go to war, we can’t have a response that doesn’t make an impact. How do we do that? Honestly, I don’t know. I’m torn because I support what the president is doing while disappointed that some civilians have died.

I’ve already seen a cartoon by a right-winger claiming Biden is being a warmonger by ordering these strikes. President Biden can’t win with Republicans so that’s one group he shouldn’t try to appease. And to those Republicans howling that President Biden telegraphed this to Iran, Donald Trump personally called Vladimir Putin before he bombed a runway in Syria.

Creative note: One of my proofers was concerned about the term Nancy Boy in this cartoon, but I decided to leave it in. She said since it’s something the general is concerned Republicans will say, then it’s probably OK. What do you think?

  1. The proper responee at this time is for Biden to make a date with Khamenei at a neutral site and have a good heart-to-heart with him. If neither one truly wants war (yet), let them try to find agreement on the best way forward. Biden is a statesman and while I have no idea about Khamenei, I’m pretty sure he is not prepsred to go to war (right now). Diplomacy is the best option, and a direct conversation between two leaders cannot hurt, and might help in ways no one can see at present!
