I’ve always heard of the Homer Davenport Community Festival cartoon contest, but I never did enter. One reason I never entered is that it requires a non-published cartoon. I think that’s weird, but you know me and that I always have cartoon ideas I never ink or publish, so I decided, “What the hell?”, and I entered one just to see what would happen.
What happened is I won first place in the People’s Choice category. There’s a second category and I think that’s where the prize money goes, so I’m probably not getting anything. But, looking at the other contestant, and with all due respect, I think this is a contest more for amateurs and not for someone who’s been doing this for over 30 years. Maybe my entering wasn’t fair so I won’t be entering again, but I will use this to encourage newer cartoonists to enter.
Anyway, the cartoon I entered is one I started back on that Sloop John B. Amtrak ride from hell back in June coming home from covering Donald Trump’s arraignment in Miami. I got something out of it.
Honestly, I think I just wanted to be able to say, “I won a Homer.”
