I only drew five roughs for CNN the week before last and I could have stopped at three. I drew two on Thursday, May 19. I drew three the next morning on Friday. I sent the first to Jane, my editor last week, and while I was uploading the next two into an email, Jane had replied that she wanted the first. It was an easy week.

I really liked this one. It was drawn on Thursday of that week. But I had already drawn an alien cartoon with this same artistic layout for my newspaper clients. If CNN had picked it, I would have done something different with the design of it.

I did this cartoon after the shooting in Buffalo. While I was drawing that one which only featured Tucker, I took a break from it to draw this version with Trump. I felt it was strong with just Tucker and went back to the original drawing and left this one hanging incomplete. This was not a pitch to CNN. I did this one several days before I had to start drawing for them.

This is one of those drawn after CNN had made their selection. That’s supposed to be Elon with Trump. I forgot to label him.

If I’m remembering correctly, this was pitched to CNN that Thursday. I did make this a cartoon for my newspaper clients. I drew the official cartoon on a Saturay and threw a lot of Easter eggs into it.

This was another drawn after CNN had made their choice.

This is the one CNN chose and it was the best for the newsletter. It did really well on social media too. It did much better than I expected as it got around 500 shares on Facebook alone. I liked it.
We took the week off from the CNN Opinion newsletter for Memorial Day weekend, which means new cartoons weren’t drawn for a batch to be posted next week. But have no fear because I’m writing this while in my underwear. Is that how that expression goes? No? Anyway, I have a plan.
There’s a bunch of cartoons in the maybe folder that have passed their expiration date, so I’m going to post those here next week. What? Leftovers? Yup. I think there are some real good ones there.
So which of these are your favorites?
