My editor at CNN presented me with a challenge last Thursday before the debate. Without knowing what was going to happen during the debate, he wanted TWO cartoons on it, one for Trump and one for Biden. There was nothing in my assignment about presenting something positive about both guys. This was interesting for me because I had no idea what kind of cartoons I would write.
I was expecting a late night, but it wasn’t that bad. I drew ten roughs and most of them were on Biden. Ten roughs for two cartoons isn’t bad for me. I finished up kinda early (around 6 p.m.) and made some leftover spaghetti.

I don’t think I’ve ever used this cliché before, but I like it. A cliché can be so cliché but at other times, they’re perfect. But we didn’t use this. A few days later, my buddy Rob Rogers used the concept and he told me he knew someone else would think of it as well. I told him that I think of these same concepts because all of us satirists grew up on the same movies.

This too is a cliché and I liked it, but then I saw at least two other cartoons using the Hindenburg to describe President Biden’s performance. This is why I have to be careful with using a cliché. I probably care about this more than other cartoonist. Maybe I’m too uptight.

I think this is a good cartoon and maybe I should do it, but it didn’t fit the assignment.

I did hear some people say at least the debate proved Biden wasn’t drugged…unless it was Benadryl. Also, Trump is the one who started the lie without any grounds which makes me think he was projecting.

CNN Opinion picked this for the Trump cartoon.

I liked this one but I’m good with it not being selected. It’s accurate. Biden beat himself more than Trump beat him.

I don’t know if this would have been the right cartoon to select, but I like it. I was planning to do this cartoon this week, but my Labour cartoon killed it.

This is the cartoon CNN selected. It’s very accurate.

This is the cartoon that makes me laugh. It still makes me laugh. It might be my favorite in this batch.

In addition to doing one cartoon on Biden and another on Trump, I needed to do one on each for my newspaper clients. Since CNN didn’t take this one, I did it for my papers. I was sending it to CNN when Jessica, one of the editors, emailed that they had selected the cartoons.
The next two are roughs for the Fredericksburg Advance. I drew the first two last Tuesday and the third on Wednesday. There’s a third but I’m saving it.

This wasn’t the right cartoon and Martin, my editor, asked me to explain it. I knew then it didn’t work. I forgot to finish spelling “nay.” I also misspelled Council.

This was the right cartoon. I wrote it on Wednesday after two ideas were killed on Tuesday. I’m glad they were killed because this one is so much better. You know it’s a local cartoon because nobody outside the Burg is going to understand it. Here’s a link.
Here are a couple more bonus roughs.

I was working on my Fourth of July cartoon and this became this.

I didn’t think people would get this so I turned it into this, and I’m really glad I did. The finished version was completed on a train.

I’m a former city planner, and while I don’t know about the Mary’s Landing thing, I love the rough about the outdated plat! Also the rest, especially the doggy under the bed.
