The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, as well as three leaders of Hamas, on charges of war crimes from the devastating Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel’s devastating retaliatory campaign that’s killed close to 35,000 civilians in Gaza.

In 2019, The New York Times published a cartoon in its international edition that was critical of Netanyahu. After receiving widespread condemnation with accusations of antisemitism of the cartoon, drawn by Portuguese cartoonist António Moreira Antunes, the Tmes apologized. After a few more apologies, the Times made the decision to never publish a political cartoon ever again.

Oh, don’t worry about the Times not winning Pulitzers in the future for political cartoons. The Pulitzer Prizes decided to remove the category that was exclusive to political cartoons and made it one for “graphic reporting.” Cartoonists can still enter, but none have won since. But, The New York Times has won two.

A cartoonist has not won the Pulitzer Prize since…take a guess… 2019, when the New York Times stopped publishing political cartoons.

If a political cartoonist does win a Pulitzer in the future, with cartoons like this, it won’t be me.
