Roughs, Volume 232

Only six of these were drawn last Friday while working for CNN. The rest were drawn earlier in the week.

I was working on this in the evening, Tuesday, May 7, to get ahead of schedule and got a better idea when I was in the middle of lettering. This is the better idea. Told you.

I knew this wasn’t the idea to go with and later on my YouTube channel, one of my regular commenters made the same joke. At least it wasn’t a starving worm idea, which at least five other cartoonists drew. This was drawn in the evening, last Wednesday, May 8.

This too was sketched out last Wednesday, May 8.

Last Wednesday, May 8. This is what I finally went with.

Honestly, I never would have thought of using the new Jerry Seinfeld movie, Unfrosted, for a cartoon concept. It was assigned by my editor at CNN. I almost watched the movie the weekend it came out on Netflix, but I chose to watch other stuff. I don’t watch as much news on the weekends and watch movies and binge TV shows instead. But I now had homework and that was to watch Unfrosted on Thursday night.

I liked the movie but I wasn’t overwhelmed. One reviewer said it’s a movie that comedians will probably enjoy more than the casual audience and ya know…maybe cartoonists will enjoy it more too. While thinking about ideas for it, some of the lines in the movie came back to me and made me laugh again, so I think I’m going to give it another viewing. Writing ideas for it, however, was hard.

Update: I gave it another viewing. I like it in an it’s-OK-kinda-way, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

The rest of these were drawn last Friday, May 10.

The one concern I had with the assignment was that I didn’t know if viewers would have seen it. But, when I got the assignment, I was hanging with a friend who’s a little geeky, and after I told him what my editor just sent me, he started quoting the movie. So, that was a little reassuring. I had to tell him to shut up because even though watching the movie was homework, I wanted to enjoy it without spoilers.

Spoiler alert: There’s an insurrection attempt in the movie.

Yeah.

I thought of this while watching the movie. Our heroes were brilliant enough to invent Pop-Tarts but not smart enough to buy out the milk companies? I think if there’s a sequel, there should be a cow strike, Hey, Jerry…call me!

This was also inspired by Apple’s new pencil for the iPad. I was excited when I read about the features and wanted one, but Apple being Apple…it only pairs with the newest iPad. But apparently, my iPad purchased in 2021, an iPad Pro 12.9, is too old for the new Apple Pencil.

I showed all these to my pal Alexandra (this year’s Locher Award winner) in a coffee shop on Wednesday and this was her favorite, probably because she has the same iPad I have.

And this is the one my editor said “yeah” to. Check it out. I’m going to be honest, this didn’t get a lot of reactions and the ones it did get weren’t positive. I got a lot of responses that were like shrugged shoulders which is worse than Trumpers calling me a libtard and a snowflake. Someone even posted a shrugged-shoulder emoji. Oh, well, and k-Sarah-Sarah.

  1. My favorite is the first one, even though I liked the one you went with. The bear being horrified sums it up for me.

I’d never even heard of Unfrosted until seeing your cartoon “If Apple Wrote Unfrosted”. Had to go look it up, and thought it sounds kind of bland.

  2. My fave was the first one, and the one about brain worms/autism, etc. Also, thank you for explaining the last one (Apple crushing the tiger)! When you posted it the other day I had no clue what it was about. It finally makes sense to me.
