Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker revealed himself during a commencement address to be a misogynistic pig.
During a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private college in Kansas that invites fundamentalist zealot football kickers to give commencement speeches, Butker gave a speech that many are describing as bigoted, misogynistic, sexist, homophobic, and more.
During one speech, Butker criticized “dangerous gender ideologies” and attacked “abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia,” and “a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media,” among other things.
He told the men in attendance to “be unapologetic in [their] masculinity” and to “fight against the cultural emasculation of men,” suggesting that it is men and men alone who “set the tone of the culture and men need to whip out their toxic masculinity. “He said, “When that is absent, disorder, dysfunction, and chaos set in.”
He also suggested to the women receiving their bachelor’s degrees that the “most important title” in their lives would be “homemaker,” and that career aspirations for women were the result of “diabolical lies.”
He said to the graduating women, “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” Yeah, maybe somewhere out there is a 7th-round fundamentalist NFK kicker who can be their domineering life partner too.
He said that his “beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” you know, when she became subservient to him.
And then he referenced Taylor Swift, saying, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt,” which is a line from her song, Bejewelled. See what he did there? He didn’t say her name because her title is his “teammate’s girlfriend,” as though she’s property. Maybe Butker hasn’t noticed, but Swift has a career, is unmarried, doesn’t have children, and holds the record for the highest-grossing tour ever in the universe. She also makes more money than his “teammate.” She also makes more money than Butker, a 7th-round selection.
Guess who else has a career? Butker’s mother, who holds two degrees and has been a clinical medical physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University since 1988. Maybe she didn’t breastfeed…or she did and he still hasn’t gotten over that she stopped.
This subject of women’s oppression is close to Butker’s heart as he gave a similar address last year at Georgia Tech. What’s with colleges inviting commencement addresses from kickers? He’s spoken at Benedictine TWICE.
Butker, who is Catholic, also blamed Jews for killing Jesus and criticized a bill denouncing antisemitism. Remember, this is a white male conservative football kicker and NOT a college student protesting against Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
He supported an Amendment in Kansas that would have overridden a state Supreme Court ruling that said abortion is guaranteed by the state Constitution. He also wore an anti-choice tie to a Super Bowl party at the White House to stick it in President Biden’s face.
During his Benedictine speech, he criticized the Catholic Church for burying a recently deceased pro-trans advocate and said Pride Month was an example of the “deadly sins.” He believes he and other “traditional” Catholics are “persecuted” by the Church, joining millions of other White Christian men who believe they are the most persecuted demographic in history.
During that same speech, he criticized President Biden saying, “Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally.” He also criticized Biden’s response to COVID-19.
He also visited with pro-terrorist and running man Senator Josh Hawley at something called the Stronger Man Conference.”
Butker must be a delight in the Chiefs’ locker room. Hmm… I wonder who he voted for.

Wow, he’s clearly from the dark ages, where MAGAs lurk and Fundies thrive. It’d be interesting to interview the female grads to see how they felt about his little talk down to them after all of their hard work getting those degrees. What a pig!

His commencement speech is not fundamentalist. It is medieval. He wants to go back to long before Vatican II. In Spain, where I live, there is a fascist right-wing movement represented ecclesiastically by the very secretive Opus Dei and politically by a recent player, Vox. When I say fascist, I mean people who remember Franco fondly. 450,000 people died AFTER the civil war, thousand’s died constructing a monument to fascism (with the largest crucifix in Europe) and tomb that housed de Rivera and Franco – until he was disinterred and reburied in the church where his family was buried . (Obviously, the place has been repurposed So unenlightened are these guys that they talk about Masons and Rosicrucians as diabolical (as opposed to misguided) and still voice anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Really, they want to go back to 1492, when the Moors were expelled and the Inquisition began. They are quite conflicted about Palestine. They long for a new Crusade. However, Vox is about half the size of MAGA.
The American Catholic Church is EASILY the most conservative in the world. A Bishop in Texas was recently removed from his position of authority for his vocal public opposition to reforms and encyclicals from the Vatican. (Obviously he doesn’t believe in papal infallibility, which dates only to the19th century.) In America, you find rehabilitated (?!?) Mel Gibson and his ilk. You find institutions like Benedictine College that are training a generation of Inquisitors. Amy Barrett, the Handmaiden Justice is a member of a famously male-dominated cult. Scratch deeply enough and you find this shit everywhere. Look at the Hassidim in Brooklyn and Israel (where they are exempt from the draft), who promote marriages that are illegal throughout the rest of the secular world, with brides possessing almost no formal education, as young as 14. And who are required (not suggested) to be submissive to their mate. Where being gay is reviled.
But today was a wake and bake, and although I could go on ad nauseum I’ll just finish by saying: I liked the cartoon, thanks Clay. But I would emphasize more that this is a particularly vicious for of fundamentalism: Inquisitorial, fascistic Roman Catholicism.
