Roughs, Volume 228

I had a tough Friday last week coming up with a cartoon idea for CNN. It was so tough that it rolled into a tough Saturday.

I drew this last week, on Wednesday, April 17, and I didn’t think it worked. Two of my friends agreed while another, a cartoonist, told me it did.

I drew this last Friday, April 19, and the Pina Colada part gave me the idea to make the cartoon from the Pina Colada song.

I left it to the vote of three women with one voting for the first cartoon and two voting for the Pina Colada song. So I went with the Pina Colada version.

The rest of these were drawn last Friday.

My editor liked this one but suggested that Taylor be in the cartoon.

So I did this as an example, using the cover of Swift’s new album, but we didn’t choose it.

I liked this one.

I liked this one if I had to do something on Taylor Swift.

I was still trying to do something on Taylor Swift. I did not love this.

I thought this was kinda OK.

I don’t get a response on most of the cartoons my editor at CNN doesn’t want, but this cartoon got one. It wasn’t positive. But I went with it for my newspapers without expecting any of them to run it. A couple did. Most of the responses to this cartoon from readers also were not positive.

I drew the finished version of the cartoon around Midnight because I had to keep pitching ideas to CNN on Saturday, and I wanted to get my syndication/newspaper cartoon out of the way so I could dedicate the day to CNN. I do that on Thursdays too so I can give CNN my Fridays.

I did more on the new Olympic uniforms. This one sucks.

I thought this was pretty good.

I liked this one. It’s weird.

This subject wasn’t one of my options, but I threw it out there when the idea came to me. I like it.

I didn’t love this one. I don’t think it’s accurate either. The Russians will be competing but I don’t think they can bring their flag.

The foreign aid bill was the new assignment on Saturday morning but this wasn’t chosen.

Finally…after two days of pitching ideas, my editor chose one. This is it. I think it’s pretty good. A lot of readers loved it.

This was the last pitch, drawn before the approval email arrived for the chosen cartoon.

There’s one more rough that was drawn with the rest of this batch, but I’m holding onto it until tomorrow. Of course, I said that every day this past week, so who knows. It’s good. Trust me.

So, which of these are your favorites?

  1. I thought Bedtime Story was pretty darn good. Can’t go wrong with pointing out what a fruit loop MTG is.

    TS album attack, also good.

    Olympic Uniform good as well.

Saw a couple of those that made it to the big time. Stands to reason they were also pretty good.
