Russian March Madness

Russian President Vladimir Putin won reelection this weekend with 87 percent of the vote. I know. I’m surprised it was that close too.

Putin and the Kremlin views this as a mandate and national affirmation of Putin and his illegal invasion of Ukraine, never mind that it’s a rigged election. It’s the kind of election that Donald Trump will congratulate Putin on winning, which he did for the last Russian election despite his advisers telling him explicitly “not to congratulate.”

Presidential elections in Russia are rigged. The opposition candidates are actually Putin supporters and they don’t run campaigns that criticize him. Think of it like Donald Trump running for reelection with his only opponents being Laura Loomer and the MyPillow fucker. There were three candidates “competing” against Putin. All three are members of the Duma, Russia’s legislature which is a rubber stamp for Putin (it’s like the Republican Party controlled by Trump), and all three voted for the illegal invasion of Ukraine, for increased censorship, and for laws restricting gay rights. The last real opponent to Putin was murdered in a Siberian gulag two weeks ago. As for protests, over 80 protesters were arrested at one Russian polling station today.

Putin is 71 which is young in U.S. politics. This will be his fifth term as Russia’s president and he has changed the Russian constitution multiple times to give him additional terms. As it stands now, he can serve until 2036. Soon, he’ll be Russia’s longest-serving dictator, surpassing Joseph Stalin.

There is online voting in Russia. Some polling stations hold raffles and award prizes for “voting.” Election monitors are forbidden as are street protests. Note that Putin still has to cheat to win these elections even after eliminating his competition. Saddam Hussein used to win his reelections with these kinds of numbers too.

Vladimir Putin will be president of Russia until he’s dead. This is exactly the kind of system Donald Trump wants for himself and this nation. Over the weekend, he promised a “blood bath” if he doesn’t “win” the 2024 presidential election.

When will voters here start paying attention? Hello?
