Roughs, Volume 192

This batch of roughs is smaller than usual but I included a bonus at the bottom. Most of these were drawn Friday, July 28.

This was actually drawn on July 24, which was a Monday. I dug it but I thought I could do something better on the subject. After getting this far into the drawing process, I thought of another idea that I did like better. I drew the other cartoon on Dan Snyder selling the team and it made The Washington Post. How about that?

An NFL owner selling a team for $6 billion is a national issue but the hatred and animosity for Dan Snyder is probably more regional to the area I live in.

I’ve been very public about my displeasure with the Post running gag cartoons on their opinion page, and even labeling them as “editorial” cartoons, yet I made the paper three times in July. Go figure.

I didn’t know if this worked, so I drew this cartoon on Mitch instead.

I may use this concept in the future, but this didn’t do it for me. But who knows what I’ll draw if new charges come out of Atlanta next week.

This is interesting and I’ve already written about this, but I’m doing it again. This is the cartoon my editor selected for the CNN Opinion newsletter. His email telling me this was the cartoon he chose was very clear. There shouldn’t have been any confusion on my part, but there was. There was another cartoon on aliens and Congress in that batch of roughs, and I just assumed he meant that one. Maybe because I liked it better. So, I drew that cartoon. About an hour after sending it in, I was told I drew the wrong cartoon and I had to get back to work. I’m stupid. I do like this cartoon.

This was the cartoon I assumed my editor chose. That’s my bad. But after drawing the one he wanted, I still had this completed. I spent a little time trying to decide if it was different enough from the one CNN chose and ultimately decided it was, and I sent it to my newspaper clients. But, I waited two days until after CNN published their cartoon. I felt their cartoon had the right to run first and I didn’t want to do anything to take attention away from it. Honestly, if I had known this cartoon was going to my clients, I would have made it a bit more salacious.

I like this cartoon and I almost drew it. And I know that if I did, some of my readers might yell at me. But so what? The thing is, kids…we don’t have to care about Hunter Biden. Is he a scumbag? Yes. Certainly, all of his business ventures have been based on the “Biden” name and his father’s reputation, but that in itself is not illegal. But you look at other aspects of his life, and he has been kind of scummy although most of that isn’t illegal either. I’m not talking about his drug addiction. If Hunter Biden has committed a crime, then make him pay for it. But, don’t make the punishment overly excessive. For example, stop spending half a decade investigating this guy over some tax crap and whether or not he registered as a lobbyist. Isn’t that stuff pretty easy to figure out? And members of Congress don’t need to show pictures of his penis in committee hearings as evidence he’s committed a crime, because that’s not evidence he committed a crime.

Republicans have spent years on this guy and they still haven’t proven one major crime. All they have are late tax payments and lying on a form to purchase a gun which nobody goes to jail for. Even the hearings last week with Devon Archer failed to produce any accusations of crimes.

My only concern with doing this cartoon isn’t about pissing off my readers but giving strength to the stupid lying arguments of MAGAts. I would die if Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted out one of my cartoons to support one of her arguments. Ugh.

But I still think it’s a funny cartoon.

I thought this idea sucked but now that I’m looking at it again, I kinda like it. Taylor Swift did cause an earthquake. Seriously.

Twice last week…TWICE…I shelved a cartoon after drawing it. I drew this on Pee-Wee as a tribute. After I finished the cartoon, I made all the files for it that my clients require (an RGB, a CMYK, a black and white, and a TIFF for GoComics), loaded the files into an email for my clients, and before I clicked “send” on the email, I got a better idea. I stopped the presses, so to speak, and drew the other and much better cartoon. Both cartoons used the basement gag. If you are unfamiliar with the basement scene in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, that’s too bad I’m not going to explain it to you.

Anyway, there was no use or need for this cartoon after the other went out, which was better. So, until now, this cartoon was trashed. But, you will note that the caricatures are the same.

Bob Gorrell and Dave Granlund are lazy cartoonists who rarely ever draw a caricature twice. They draw a person once and then copy and paste it every time they do a new cartoon on that subject. They do it with objects too. I refuse to do that as it makes the cartoon stale, generic-looking, and takes all energy and spontaneity out of it. It’s not a crime and maybe isn’t even an ethical violation, but it’s very lazy and kinda dishonest. Why do some cartoonists want to be cartoonists if they don’t want to draw cartoons? Signing your name on a logo you copied and pasted and typed some text next to DOESN’T MAKE IT A POLITICAL CARTOON. It makes it a meme.

But, I did the copy-and-paste thing for this cartoon since I hadn’t published the Pee-Wee caricature. That made it original.

Last week, I drew too much. I had a day where I drew the wrong cartoon, another day when I shelved a cartoon, and even got a day ahead on my file dates, all before having to go out of town for another Trump arraignment. I’m tired. I actually drew two cartoons yesterday, a Saturday, with one of them being shelved. And, there’s a very strong possibility I’m going to Atlanta this week. So, I’m not drawing today.

That doesn’t mean I’m not working. I posted the CNN cartoon, I made a video for yesterday’s cartoon, and you’re getting this blog. I don’t Bob-Gorrell my work. I’m still the hardest-working political cartoonist in the business. Hell, MAGAt cartoonists don’t even research for their cartoons. This fucker either didn’t read any genuine news articles (Breitbart doesn’t count) about the subject he’s covering or he’s lying about it.

Anyway, I’m not drawing today and I already don’t know what to do with myself.

    BLOG RULE NUMBER ONE:
Don’t ever, EVER, put a line like that in your Blog… it leaves you wide open for incredibly snarky comments. 😉

This Part Finished/Part Rough provides an interesting view of your Creative Process. I always assumed that you drew Pizza Rat last, fitting him into the finished drawing where he would have the most effective impact. (Not sure why… I guess that’s how I would have done it, if I thought that I could do Graphic Editorials.) 😉

I already commented on this for “Aliens and Congress”, but I just want to add that you shoulda had Alien Pizza Rat holding a pointer stick up to the picture of the Capitol. 😉
