Paging Mr. Herman

Most of us know Paul Ruebens as Pee-Wee Herman. In fact, his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is engraved with “Pee-Wee,” not Paul.

I was a casual Paul Ruebens fan. I saw bits of his TV show here and there, and I never did see Pee-Wee’s Big Top or Pee-Wee’s Holiday, but I did watch Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure about dozen times, and I want to watch it again.

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure is one of the most brilliant comedies ever made. It was the perfect film for such a bizarre, irreverent, and hilarious character. Pee-Wee Herman, which was created by Reubens and the late Phil Hartman (I just learned that), which makes sense because both comedians were geniuses.

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure was written by Reubens, Hartman, and directed by Tim Burton (which helped him get Beetlejuice and Batman), and was scored by Danny Elfman.

Ruebens was publicly ridiculed and shunned after an arrest in 1991, and another in 2002. But he took on several small parts in movies and TV shows, such as Murphy Brown. One of his most memorable roles was The Spleen, in the film Mystery Men. The Spleen’s superpower was his farts.

I don’t draw a lot of memorial cartoons, but since I saw so many of my readers express love and sadness for Paul Reubens, I realized we have the same people. It takes weird people to like what we do because we too are weird people. So, my readers deserved a cartoon on Pee-Wee Herman from me. In fact, I drew two.

Just as I finished drawing a cartoon on Paul Reubens (full color), I got this idea and I knew it was much better. But that worked out because it kept me from going to the bank today which kept me home to hear the breaking news of Trump’s latest indictment. Maybe Pee-Wee told me to draw that second cartoon. Thanks, Pee-Wee. I can hear your laugh now.

And if you think I’m really weird, I know you are but what am I?

Music note: I listened to Nirvana.

Creative note: You’ll see the other Pee-Wee tribute later this week, or next…who knows?
