Roughs, Volume 186

Half of these were drawn on the train on my trip back from Miami. The reason some don’t look like they were drawn while the train was moving is because it wasn’t.

Also, there were two more roughs drawn that week but I’m holding them in the Maybe Folder.

This was drawn while the train was moving. Look at those squiggly lines.

This too was drawn while the train was moving and I turned it into an official cartoon a few days later.

This one may have been drawn after the train hit that tree in South Carolina.

Yeah, this was definitely roughed out during the seven-hour delay after the tree-hitting incident.

This one later became an official cartoon. It was drawn during the train delay.

This was drawn after I arrived home and was back in my apartment.

This wasn’t what my editor was looking for but I drew it anyway.

My editor wanted something on the high quantity of Republican presidential candidates and he selected this one for the CNN Opinion newsletter. There are now even more candidates than when I created this cartoon.

I was glad my editor didn’t select this one because it was very late in the day by the time I drew it and I was really tired after the 30-hour Sloop John B. tree-killing train ride from Hell. This would have taken a lot of work. I do like the idea.

I think this is OK.

This is alright. I don’t get excited over cartoons with clowns.

This is a cliché but you gotta remember, I had just spent 30 hours on a train. I also think it’s very apt. It was also before the Titanic submersible got into the news.
