Roughs, Volume 240

I drew 20 roughs last week, so I decided to split them into two blogs. This is part one. These are on various subjects while all the cartoons/roughs in part two will be on the debate. Part one is short while part two will be twice the size. Egads!

Each of these roughs on Louisiana’s decision to post the Ten Commandments in all public classrooms was drawn last Thursday morning, June 20, in the lobby of the CitizenM hotel in the NoMa neighborhood of Washington, DC. At the time, I hadn’t seen any cartoons on the issue and I was wondering if it was even on other cartoonists’ radars except for Walt Handelsman, who is in New Orleans (I’ve seen dozens by this point and maybe even a couple before I finished my cartoon that day). I had just finished breakfast in the hotel and then I went back to my room, grabbed all my gear, and returned to the lobby/bar area to draw. I didn’t have my idea yet.

Although I could work in my room (it has a tiny but doable desk), CitizenM has dozens of work areas in the lobby and bar area. The only thing missing for me are TVs.

I was pretty settled on making this first idea the cartoon, but my brain wouldn’t stop.

I thought this was OK but I didn’t even bother to fill in the second tablet. I did like the “no fatties.”

This is the cartoon I went with. I was originally going to complete this version, but then I thought it was kinda boring and it needed some background. I’ve seen a few other cartoonists make this same point later.

Oops. I lied. This cartoon was drawn Friday morning. I sent each of these to CNN even though I doubted this would be our subject.

This was drawn Thursday evening in Washington, but it wasn’t the right idea. A lot of people would not have understood it. Maybe only cartoonists would have gotten it. Basically, in addition to the recent controversies with the Post’s owner Jeff Bezos, and its new publisher, the Post has made some atrocious decisions with its cartoon choices lately (no, not when they publish me. Haha).

I thought this was close but later abandoned it. I eventually found my idea for this and published it last Sunday.

I liked this one and published the completed version last Saturday.

Which of these are your favorites?

I’ll publish part two of this batch on Friday, after Thursday night’s debate.

  1. I really like the first one – it shows that kids are smarter than the adults that make the laws! I also like the one with Putin and Kim, and
