I don’t usually post a blog full of roughs in the middle of the week but I drew so many last week, that putting all of them into one blog would be too much. I didn’t draw them all on the same day but I drew 23 roughs last week. I’m splitting them into two blogs. Another reason to split these is that including all of them makes the videos so long which is kinda brutal for me. The first one will be the ideas I’ve either turned into completed cartoons or ideas I’ve self-rejected. Here we go.

I drew this last Tuesday, February 13. I liked the point it was making but I decided to go with funnier. This was a situation where I bounced both ideas off a couple of friends.

This was drawn last Thursday, February 15. I kept going back and forth between it and the next rough. I even lettered both. I eventually decided to go with funnier…again.

Drawn last Thursday night, as was the finished version. Two of my colleagues messaged me compliments on it which I didn’t see coming.

This was drawn last Friday, February 16 before we all heard about the shoes. It didn’t go anywhere. The rest of these are from last Friday. I drew a shit ton of roughs last Friday. This was the first one.

I drew a lot of Navalny ideas with tombstones. I saved a few of them for the next Blog O’ Roughs

I think I had this idea the night before I drew it.

This grew up to become a finished cartoon. I may have been the first cartoonist in the country to draw on this subject. I could be wrong. I have a second idea on this that I think is really funny and since Republicans are making new noises and excuses about this, I may do that cartoon tomorrow. That means the rough for it is saved for the next blog.

My problem with this one is that Navalny definitely did not kill himself. Hanging doesn’t work as a metaphor here as it’s intended.

I like this one but I didn’t think I nailed it. My pal Mike Luckovich published a cartoon yesterday of Tucker and Navalny’s tombstone that is wonderful and I wish I had thought of it. It’s so good I kinda hate seeing it.

Sometimes I’ll try to draw something I think an editor will like, even though I don’t love it. I didn’t hate this but it didn’t move me. I’m glad it wasn’t chosen by CNN. I tend to draw the ideas I don’t love but can live with after I’ve drawn ten or more roughs.

This was one of those weeks where I was really happy with the cartoon CNN picked. I loved it which really helps you draw after a very long tedious day of pitching ideas.

This was a leftover from Friday and I made it a finished cartoon on Saturday.
Which of these are your favorites? I’ll post the rest of this batch, which will contain 11 cartoons, on Friday or Saturday.
