Roughs, Volume 214

Ding-dong! Time for roughs!

This one was drawn on Monday, February 5. I liked the idea for this but didn’t like the setting. I wasn’t into it.

This was drawn on Tuesday, February 6. I was afraid the syphilis might scare editors off and I had already made fun of that before, so I went with this, which I believe is stronger.

This was Wednesday, February 7. I was torn on which idea to draw on this subject and I eventually went with this. I liked the concept of Republicans being the parent in this case and my colleague Rob Rogers used that same concept today, and I have to admit, he did it better than I did with this rough.

This was drawn on Thursday, February 8. This was too wordy. I’ve seen at least five MAGA cartoonists use the official GOP talking point on this. Here’s a free unsolicited cartooning tip: Don’t let politicians or political parties write your cartoons for you. Better yet, don’t let anyone write your cartoons for you. I don’t.

This was also drawn on Thursday, February 8. I thought it was merely amusing.

This was also drawn on February 8. Even though I have Trump being racist and confused here, I wasn’t comfortable with this one. I sent it to two friends, with one of them being a cartoonist. Both thought it was OK but for some reason, we needed a discussion over it. Having to talk about it and why it was OK was enough for me to rule that it wasn’t OK. I had another concern with readers even knowing Robert Hur is Asian. So, I just decided not to go there. I didn’t even send this one to my editors at CNN. But, I still think it’s funny.

This, and the rest of the cartoons, were drawn on Friday, February 9. A lot of other people have made this comparison. I’m writing this blog on Saturday, February 10, and I’m not going to publish until at least Friday. We’ll see between now and then if someone else does a cartoon similar to this. I’ll update if I see one.

Update: I haven’t seen any cartoons using this idea.

Again, amusing. But I don’t like the both-sidesing of this, so I threw it away.

I thought this was good but then I saw two other cartoons on this issue using the same concept, so I drew this instead, which is funnier. This also kinda both-sides it again, so yeah.

This didn’t go anywhere.

This became the cartoon for the CNN Opinion newsletter.

I didn’t love this and later, I saw another cartoonist use the idea of Biden forgetting his pants.

I was going to go with this one for V-day but instead, drew this which a lot of my clients used, and even Politico published it.
