Roughs, Volume 212

All of these were drawn on Friday, January 26.

I never was able to fit in a cartoon about Greta Gerwig, the director, and Margot Robbie, the star of the Barbie movie, both being snubbed by the Oscars while Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, got a best supporting actor nomination. It is like the Academy didn’t watch the movie or at least didn’t understand it. But I thought there might be a way to use it as an analogy with Nikki Haley being snubbed by the Republican Party.

And this was another way to do it.

But then I thought, we shouldn’t compare Barbie to Nikki Haley because Nikki isn’t on Barbie’s side.

This is the one CNN picked last week.

Just like the Barbie issue, this one got away from me too. I liked this one.

This idea led to the idea I was happy with. Keep scrolling.

This one didn’t work for me on a couple of levels. There is creative license for political cartoons but it might be pushing the boundaries of reality to put Melania and Trump in bed together as they don’t even sleep in the same room. And who can blame Melania for not wanting to sleep with a 260-pound man wearing a diaper? Ew.

This became a finished cartoon.

This one, and the one below it, were drawn on Sunday, January 29. I started to draw this Sunday morning, wanting to finish it and the blog in time to watch the AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and the Ravens. And then I got another idea (the one below this) that involved women and football and went with that. I still like this cartoon but didn’t want to do two similar to each other.

This is the cartoon I chose over the Barbie/Nikki cartoon. But I roughed it out to bounce off my two proofers and a friend. I think the friend liked both equally as she never did state a preference but both my proofers liked the football cartoon better. And it worked out because Taylor’s team won. Some readers pointed out other women I didn’t include, but I can’t get everyone in. A few others said I should have included Nikki Haley but again, she’s not with these women.

This isn’t a rough. This is a finished cartoon I put aside before coloring. I changed my mind on this one because I started to think maybe I’ve done too many sidewalk-begging cartoons.

Which of these are your favorites.
