Roughs, Volume 197

After a two-week break, the roughs are back. Most of these were drawn last Friday, September 8, but not the first one.

This is a rough I drew two years ago and put into my Maybe folder. The rough has the 20th anniversary labeled in it. This was originally shelved to be resurrected for September 11, 2022, but when that time came, Queen Elizabeth had just died and somebody had to draw a Beefeater cartoon, so it had to wait another year. I finally drew it and it went over pretty well on social media.

I was over Burning Man jokes last week before I could start a Burning Man cartoon. There were so so oh so many stuck-in-the-mud metaphors. Some readers actually tweeted anticipation to see what I would do with Burning Man, but I can’t let that pressure me. I got three of those this week on other subjects. It’s a huge compliment. I still can’t fully accept that I have fans or that people are waiting on my next cartoon.

This is for a cartoon that I drew for the FXBG Advance, a new hyper-local digital publication in my area. You can expect more of these.

I showed this rough to my pal and fellow cartoonist Chris Britt and he said I should do it. But I didn’t think it was good enough for its own cartoon, but I still found a place for it.

This was just an idea but I think a lot of you are going to like it.

This was before I drew the other Danny Masterson cartoon.

I still have to take a crack at Pumpkin Spice this fall.

My editor said “nah” to this version, so I simplified it…

And he said “yah” for the CNN Opinion newsletter. I liked it better too.

I put this aside for something else and then proofer Laura said, “I like this one better.” Dammit, she was right. I meant to go back and finish this. What’s the harm in two cartoons on this subject? None! But, it got away from me. I do like the way the Biden caricature turned out.

So, kids… which of these are your faves?
