Bo Duke is pissed. At least I think it’s Bo. Maybe it’s Luke. Either way the guy that played one of the Duke boys is upset that TV Land has stopped running The Dukes Of Hazzard because of the Confederate flag on the car called “General Lee.” I’d be upset too if there was going to be a huge cut in my residual checks.
I’m not sure this is the right thing to do. At what point do we ban art, or in this case, crappy TV shows. I understand businesses wanting to do away with an offensive symbol. I understand businesses continuing to sell that symbol to make a profit. But does something have to be completely erased because of one aspect that can be offensive?
Yes, the flag represents hate. Even then, I think it’s used in a kind of ignorant way on the show. The show was about moonshining, outrunning dumb cops and plot twists about as clever as those found on Three’s Company. The show didn’t tackle heavy issues that society was grappling with during the 1980’s.
Do we scrub the shows existence because of the flag? Do we get rid of art that has something vulgar or offensive in it like novels by Mark Twain? I wouldn’t call The Dukes Of Hazzard art but art is in the eye of the beholder. While All In The Family did tackle heavy issues and even included racist language (lampooning bigots actually), do we also ban that iconic show in the name of political correctness?
As it says in the song, “some day the mountain might get ’em but the law never will.” It looks like the PC police has finally put a stop to the Duke boys. You know what, some jackass cartoonist is going to steal that from me.
