Jeb Bush And Public Shaming

We’re gonna have fun with this. From the “Are you freaking kidding me” department, Jeb Bush believes single moms should be slut shamed.

Republicans, those lovable care bears of women issues, believe women should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term and in Florida after the baby is born the mother should be publicly shamed. That is if a single mother wanted to put a baby up for adoption and she doesn’t know the father then she has to publish her sexual history in newspapers first. Bush didn’t veto the bill. Nice.

In his 1995, Profiles In Character, he writes that restoring the art of public humiliation could help prevent pregnancies out of wedlock. He wrote “Infamous shotgun weddings and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter are reminders that public condemnation of irresponsible sexual behavior has strong historical roots,” Bush wrote.

Now he says his views have shifted since he wrote his book but he didn’t backtrack on any  specific views from the 1995 book.

1995 wasn’t that long ago.  Hell, in 1996 I voted for Bob Dole. Viewpoints can change. But Bush doesn’t need to change his viewpoints from the 1990s. He needs to change them from the 1850s.
