Inflation

Jackass Protest

I believe in this cartoon and I stand by it, but I’m a little uncomfortable with it. It’s important for me to call out the truth, and that is there are a lot of Democrats unhappy with Joe Biden. I’m uncomfortable giving them any support at this time, but mostly I’m uncomfortable that this cartoon is one a lot of MAGAts will love. Ugh. MAGAts.

The one thing I’m not cool with is that I know Biden isn’t going to push hard against the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi while in the presence of Mohammed bin Salman.

During his 2020 presidential campaign, then Candidate Biden pledged to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah” and refused once in office to speak with Mohammed, seeking to punish him with isolation. Now, he’s about to sit down for a chit-chat with the defacto ruler of Saudi Arabia and the man U.S. intelligence says ordered the hit on Khashoggi’s life.

Despite what Republicans are saying, Biden is not going to Saudi Arabia to ask them to sell us oil. We have plenty of oil here. What he’s going to push for is an increase in their production because despite what Republicans believe and think they know, gas prices are an international issue, not just domestic. Unfortunately, the reality is that President Biden has to sit with a murderer to do this.

When asked if he’s going to bring up the murder of Khashoggi to MBS, Biden took a walk around the question without answering it saying, “My views on Khashoggi have been made absolutely, positively clear. I have never been quiet about talking about human rights.” He said that his “position on Khashoggi is so clear — if anyone doesn’t understand it in Saudi Arabia or anywhere else, then they haven’t been around for a while.”

That means he’s not going to bring it up. Biden is going to be somewhere between confronting MBS and doing Trump’s sword dance with the murderer.

Biden’s real trouble isn’t with Jamal Khashoggi’s killer. It’s with voters and his own Democratic Party.

Inflation is not Joe Biden’s fault, but Biden is president and while it’s unfair to blame him for rising prices (blame Trump), it’s his job to get them down. Other voters want him to do something to save abortion rights but there’s very little a president can do to walk around Supreme Court verdicts. It will take Congress to pass abortion rights in every state, which they will not do because there are too many of them who are cowardly jackasses. But, when/if the GOP retakes Congress, you can expect their first agenda will be to ban abortion in every state and territory. Remember, everything Republicans say are lies, including “state rights.”

A lot of Democrats want a different nominee in 2024 and for Biden to ride off into the sunset when his first term is done.

Biden says Democrats want him to run and cited a New York Times poll saying 92 percent of Democrats would vote for him. What he left out is important and that is 92 percent of Democrats would vote for him if the election were held today and it was between him and Donald Trump.

That’s like asking a Democrat if the election were held today, who would he or she vote for if the only choices were Joe Biden and a moldy old racist pro- birther dishwashing sponge covered in ketchup, castor oil, fish scales, and orange pubic hair. At the very least, eight percent of Democrats would have to think about it.

While 92 percent of Democrats would choose Biden over Trump today, 64 percent of Democrats want a nominee who is not named Joe Biden. And 94 percent of Democrats between the ages of 18 and 29 definitely want someone other than Biden to be the nominee.

Let’s face facts, Joe is old. Yeah, he’s in better shape than Donald Trump. He can jog, ride a bike, climb stairs, and go from one room to another without the use of a golf cart, but he’s still old. President Biden will be 81 years old on election day in 2024. Look for Republicans, including Donald Trump, to make a lot of noise about this even though Trump himself will be 77 on election day.

And that’s the danger Democrats face in 2024. What if Trump is not the Republican nominee? Sure, despite President Biden having an approval rating of around 39 percent at this moment (the worst of any elected president at this point in his presidency since the end of World War II), most Americans will still choose him over Donald Trump, who never got above 50 percent approval during his four years of tyranny. But, what happens if Republicans nominate a younger shinier racist in 2024? What if they choose a guy, while just as narcissistic, petty, and hateful as Donald Trump, isn’t as stupid, is literate, and doesn’t spew as much racist gibberish (his racism comesin loud and clear)? What if Republicans nominate Ron DeSantis? Yeah, ew that guy.

If Republicans had to choose today, they’d pick Trump over DeSantis. But, there is a primary contest and 77-year-old Trump may not be in physical shape for such a long grueling campaign. DeSantis is. Republicans may find a way to change their minds after several debates between the two. While the cult belongs to Trump, keep in mind that Republicans are not loyal and are extremely forgetful. The same former Never Trumpers who swore they’d never back Trump, then backed him, could turn back around and support a new guy and say they never did like Trump to begin with. Do you really believe Ted Cruz is a man of his word?

And don’t forget the stupidy of the American voter. Look at Virginia. My state went strongly for President Biden, Hillary Clinton, and twice for President Obama, then elected dog-whistling lying Glenn Youngkin. Voters are stupid and forgetful, especially the moderates.

While Republicans will always vote for racist candidates, you can trick moderates into doing so. Ron DeSantis will run on some parents’ rights bullshit and dog-whistle his ass off about Critical Race Theory and convince a majority of moderate voters to vote for him. then about a week after the election, all those moderates will go, “Oh yeah….that’s why we don’t vote for Republicans.”

Can President Biden and his 39-percent approval beat a dog-whistling Ron DeSantis in 2024, or do we need to nominate someone younger?

Let’s say yes, and if that’s the case…who?

Grifter Recession

Republicans have spent the past three years or so worried about how much money Hunter Biden, the president’s son has made and where he’s made it. For the most part, all they have are conspiracy theories. They’ve been promoting a story about a supposed abandoned laptop of his while they can’t honestly say what’s on it that’s incriminating. They claim President Biden was in on the “corruption” as well despite the lack of any trails to it. They even complain about the money he made between 2017 and 2021, when Joe Biden wasn’t in office. But, they’re very quiet about Trump’s goon son-in-law Jared raking in $2 billion from the Saudis after his stint in Trump’s administration, where he spent most of his time cuddling with bone-saw aficionado Mohammed bin Salman.

Republicans claim that Hunter Biden never would have been put on the board of a Ukrainian gas company if he wasn’t the vice-president’s son, and they’re probably right. But, they ignore that Jared Kushner worked in the White House without any qualifications and actually took foreign bailouts for his businesses WHILE he was “serving” in the administration. It sounds like he only served himself.

Lately, Republicans have been leaving comments on my cartoons on this blog, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc, claiming Hillary Clinton and her campaign were fined for creating the “Russia hoax.” The truth is, the campaign was fined, not Hillary Clinton, and not for creating any hoax. The Clinton 2016 campaign was fined for how they labeled campaign expenses. They claimed the funds that paid for the Steele Dossier were “legal” expenses when they were not, though the payment did go to a law firm. It’s an issue of semantics. But as you can tell, Republicans don’t really care about the actual facts. For that matter, Republicans don’t actually care about corruption.

It’s like when they accuse Democrats of election fraud while Donald Trump is threatening Georgia’s secretary of state to “find him the votes.” Yeah, they don’t really care about lawbreaking either. Republicans only care about “who” is doing the wrongdoing.

All during the Trump administration, Donald Trump grifted. He grifted the taxpayers and violated the Emoluments Clause. He grifted foreign nations. He grifted his own supporters. Today, he’s still grifting taxpayers by living at his resorts (who do you think pays for his protective detail’s lodging?), but he’s mostly grifting his supporters. The thing is, his supporters are so sycophantic, that they’ll deny it while continuing to give him their money. They want punishment for sloppy accounting by the Clinton Campaign but they don’t want any accounting from Trump.

And they think by giving Donald Trump their money, that he’ll swoop in and end inflation, lower gas prices, and fix the markets and supply shortages, ignoring that Donald Trump is a huge part of why we’re where we are today.

First off, gas prices and supply chain shortages are international. President Joe Biden doesn’t control fuel prices in Sweden. The economy is still recovering from the pandemic that Donald Trump ignored. And gas prices keep climbing while oil companies are raking in record profits. Republicans aren’t asking the oil companies to sacrifice, are they?

Trump supporters think Donald Trump can fix it because in 2016 he said, “Only I can fix it.” But, fix what? Donald Trump has never fixed anything. Donald Trump destroys, He doesn’t create or repair. How many of his businesses have failed? Have you been to a Trump casino lately? He also inherited a booming economy created by President Barack Obama and guess what he did after that? He fucked it up.

When Donald Trump left office, he left with three million fewer jobs than when he came into office. Jimmy Carter didn’t do that. Trump left office with the worst job numbers since Herbert Hoover, who, like Donald Trump, is also rated as one of our worst presidents. You really have to be a cultist to want the guy back who created the worst economy since Herbert Hoover.

And you really have to be a sycophant to give Donald Trump money. I mean, who buys $15 straws? People who want straws with “MAGA” on them, that’s who. Spending $15 on straws that aren’t made from paper is really owning the libs. But guess what. This lib doesn’t care how you suck because you still suck.

Now, here’s the irony: Donald Trump is stealing money on the Big Lie the election was stolen. Naturally, Trump supporters are suckers for this. They’re the only ones who don’t see the irony.

In addition to proving Donald Trump and his cohorts tried to steal an election they knew they lost, the January 6 Committee has detailed how the Grifter-in-Chief used the lie to raise over $250 million from his MAGAts. Some say it’s closer to $400 million.

The $250 million Trump raised from his supporters was supposed to go into the “Official Election Defense Fund.” You may wanna sit down for this because it’s oh so not shocking at all, but the “Official Election Defense Fund” doesn’t exist. It’s like the Trump plan to replace Obamacare, or Trump’s infrastructure plan, or the promise he made not to play golf while president. Wait, I think that last one did exist but he wiped his ass with it.

No, there is no such thing as the “Official Election Defense Fund.” Instead of spending that money to defend the election Trump lost, or reinstate him, or whatever other bullshit they claimed to be fixing, the money went to Tump’s “Save America” super PAC, which was created shortly after the election. Committee member Zoe Lofgren has referred to it as the “big rip-off.”

Since the creation of Save America up until last April, the Super PAC has spent $4 million on Republican candidates’ campaigns. I don’t know if it’s worse that the money wasn’t supposed to go there or how greedy Trump has been with it.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James tweeted, “The new details revealed tonight related to January 6 are disturbing. It’s my duty to investigate allegations of fraud or potential misconduct in New York. This incident is no exception.” And it’s just one more incident. New York state has already dismantled Trump University and the Trump Foundation (a fake charity) for being outlets for Trump’s corruption. As Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen said, “Trump has made it very clear that he is grifting off of the American people.”

Lofgren pointed out, “If the litigation had stopped on Dec. 14, there would have been no fight to defend the election and no clear path to continue to raise millions of dollars.” The Big Lie isn’t just to steal an election and turn America into a fascist nation led by a Cheeto Potentate. It’s a money-raking scheme.

Supporters send Trump money to “defend” the election Trump knows he lost. They think that money is going into a defense fund that doesn’t actually exist, but instead goes into his Super PAC which then funnels the money into pro-Trump organizations which then spends much of it on Trump, Republican Party, and other assorted events hosted at…wait for it…Trump properties, where I’m sure they get really good rates for renting the convention rooms.

At one “Stop the Steal” rally funded by Turning Point Action, a pro-Trump group, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Don Jr’s girlfriend who’s probably best known as the screaming banshee from the 2020 GOP convention, was paid $60,000 for a three-minute speech introducing Don Jr. Turning Point is arguing that this money didn’t come from Trump’s fundraising, but from their own, while not explaining why they felt the need to give a screaming Republican banshee $60,000 for three minutes of ear-piercing banality.

Apparently, Trump corruption can be sexually transmitted.

If Donald Trump admits he lost the election or at least stops saying it was stolen, the money will stop coming in. I predict investigations into Trump’s corruption will continue through the next decade. I also think Trump corruption will continue throughout the next decade.

Rent Is Due For Biden

Here’s your cartoon for this week’s CNN Opinion newsletter. Please sign up to get these in your inbox every Sunday.

I was watching a story on CNN last Thursday about rent going up across the nation. It’s not just going up $20 here and $30 there per month. There are increases across the nation from 35 percent to 54 percent. People can’t cope with that, especially low-income people. They don’t have excess money for rent. I personally don’t believe our current inflation is forcing landlords to jack up rental prices to these extremes. Are property taxes going up? Are adjustable mortgages going up? From recent studies, no.

When asked about the possibility of a recession, President Joe Biden, who lives rent-free in the White House, said he’s not worried about it. He better start worrying about it because he was elected to worry about it.

I was talking to fellow cartoonist Michael De Adder last week during the Herblock Award festivities about our readers and how most of the time we are preaching to the choir. I told him that after Biden was elected, some readers came down on me for the way I caricatured him, finding it too harsh. I laughed with Michael over how they were OK with me basically drawing Donald Trump as a mango fascist Oompa-Loompa over the past six years, but give Joe Biden a high forehead with very little hair on it and they howl. Yes, you do that.

My other colleague and Russian stooge Ted Rall claims he’s the only liberal cartoonist who’s criticized President Biden, First off, he’s echoing Russia’s talking points on Biden and he’s a lying lunatic. I’ve seen plenty of liberal cartoonists, who are on President Biden’s side on most things, criticize him on other issues. It’s the MAGAt cartoonists who’d never criticize Trump but go after President Biden for saying crazy things and his low approval ratings. That’s called hypocrisy.

I am not a Democrat. I’m a liberal independent. Sure, I vote Democrat and will never ever vote for a Republican again, but I’m not a partisan while most of my audience is. I know each time I hit Biden that the cartoon will get very few shares and likes on social media. If anything, it confuses my readers which means I should do this more often.

And the thing is, most of my readers don’t love Biden. They’re defensive of him because he’s what they got right now. On the end of the spectrum, there’s a cult for Donald Trump. Joe Biden does not have a cult. I guarantee that more Democrats are willing to criticize Biden than there are Republicans criticizing Trump.

So, when my editor at CNN picked this, I knew it wouldn’t go over well with my audience on social media. It has only received 11 shares far on Facebook while getting more comments. My editor believed in the cartoon and that we need to go after both sides when called for. And you know, I almost didn’t send the rough to my editor.

My friend Mike Peterson disagreed with the cartoon today on The Daily Cartoonist, but I’m fine with his criticism and I think it was more than fair.

Empty Shelves Empty Logic

cjonesRGB11192021

Not only did Donald Trump fail to pass an infrastructure bill while he was in office, but he also tried to block President Biden’s infrastructure bill after he left office. Biden used the tactic of appealing to bipartisanship. Trump used the politics of slash-and-burn. Hey, which one worked?

Passing the infrastructure bill is a huge success for the president, especially to achieve it with bipartisan support in this hostile climate Donald Trump created. Donald Trump worked to destroy the nation while he was in office, and he’s continuing to destroy this nation out of office.

Biden did this with the support of 13 House and 19 Senate Republicans. Trump is screaming and howling that the bill is a victory for Biden and Democrats, and he’s placing most of the blame on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Of McConnell, Trump said, “Based on the fact that the Old Crow convinced many Republican Senators to vote for the Bill, greatly jeopardizing their chance of winning re-election, and that he led the way, he should go to the signing and put up with the scorn from Great Republican Patriots that are already lambasting him.”

Patriots don’t support insurrections and McConnell, the “old crow,” is only four years older than Trump. But, did you see what Trump did there? He’s upset this helps Democrats politically, showing he’s putting politics before the country.

When Trump ran in 2016, he promised to deliver a huge infrastructure package that would be larger than any infrastructure funding his opponent, Hillary Clinton, could deliver. Somehow, I think Clinton could have delivered more than zero. While Trump claims the Biden infrastructure deal spends only 11 percent of it on “actual” infrastructure, Trump’s deal that never happened delivered zero percent of nothing to “actual” infrastructure.

Trump never delivered on his promise of passing an infrastructure bill. He had four years, two with a House and Senate fully controlled by Republicans. But even if he had tried in his last two years, he could have gotten it done with support from Democrats despite him being a feeble orange moron.

During the campaign, Trump promised a $1 trillion infrastructure bill. Just like everything else he campaigned on, he never explained how he’d pay for it. After Putin inserted him into the White House, Trump raised the bullshit and said he was going for a $2 trillion package and again, never explained how he’d pay for it. He once said private corporations would do all the funding, but never explained how corporations who don’t pay taxes would generously volunteer to hand the government $2 trillion to repair shit they don’t care about. If anything, those corporations were too busy putting the tax cuts Trump gave them back into their own companies’ stocks and offshore bank accounts than to donate any of it back to the government. Corporations do transport their goods over the infrastructure, but they’d rather you and I pay for it. You know, like they’d rather we make up for the crap salaries they pay their employees by providing them with welfare.

Donald Trump displayed an amazing ignorance over how government funding and debt work. He never understood that the tariffs he raised were paid by American consumers. Instead of Mexico paying for the wall as he promised, he stole the money from one government agency and gave it to another. In case you haven’t noticed, Mexico still hasn’t paid for the wall.

Now, the Republicans who didn’t vote for the infrastructure bill are screaming about the supply-chain crisis. Fun fact: The infrastructure bill they voted against includes $17 billion for infrastructure improvements at coastal and inland ports, waterways, and ports of entry along the U.S. border. But don’t worry. There are Republicans who voted against the bill who are also taking credit for it. It’s kinda like all those Republicans who voted over 50 times to destroy Obamacare without a single one of them offering a replacement and then ran in the 2018 midterms on their support and love of Obamacare. They swore their lives to defend Obamacare. Do you remember that? Good news, shitweasels. You don’t have to remember it because I will keep reminding you.

Hey, remember that time you ran on your love for Obamacare after trying to kill it over 50 times? Ah, good times.

Another fun fact: Republicans are racist gaslighting hypocritical ass-kissing liars.

Since Republicans don’t get hypocrisy, I’ll give them an example: Complaining about the supply-chain crisis then voting against efforts to improve it is hypocritical. I’m starting to think Republicans don’t hate Critical Race Theory as much as they hate basic economics, because they didn’t study that either.

When President Obama inherited the shitty economy George W. Bush left him, Republicans were blaming Obama for the economy he inherited. They also went after him in his first year for high gas prices. This is another thing they don’t remember. President Obama inherited shit and the GOP blamed him for it. Then, when President Obama improved the economy, greatly, Republicans adopted the talking point “slowest economic recovery ever,” forgetting why we needed an economic recovery in the first place.

Psst….Republicans, two wars funded by tax cuts for billionaire assholes had a lot to do with it. Republicans were literally complaining a Democrat wasn’t cleaning up the mess they created fast enough. They knew it had to be repaired before they could fuck it all up again. And that’s exactly what they did.

When Trump came into office with the help of Russian meddlers, he inherited an economy created by his predecessor, the black guy. Even before Trump came into office, he took credit for the amazing economy. Republicans went from “slowest economic recovery ever” to an “economic miracle.” And then Trump gave billionaire assholes, including himself, tax cuts. There was never an infrastructure bill from Trump, but we celebrated Infrastructure Week four times. Infrastructure Week, like Trump himself, became a running joke in Washington.

Then, covid hit, and the unemployment rate hit 14.8 percent, the highest rate ever recorded since they started recording these things. So basically, Donald Trump is responsible for the highest unemployment rate EVER. And you still think the election was stolen? Also take note that the economy President Obama built was so great that it took the orange turd three years to destroy it.

And of course, now, Republicans are screaming that President Biden isn’t cleaning up Trump’s mess fast enough. And when it starts recovering, they’ll start calling it the “slowest economic recover ever,” forgetting why we need an economic recovery. But all this shit you’re screaming about, high gas prices, inflation, the supply-chain crisis, were all created by Donald Trump and the party that turned into a cult for him.

Republicans have very bad memories and unfortunately, so do voters.

But I don’t and I will keep reminding you.

Tomato, Tomahto, Duck

CjonesRGB11142021

Fun fact: Today’s inflation is not Joe Biden’s fault. It’s Donald Trump’s. Now, you might whine and say Trump isn’t president so you can’t blame him. You guys don’t want to give Trump credit for inflation, supply-chain issues, and high gas prices that were created while he was in office, but you were more than happy to give him credit for the economy his predecessor left him.

The great economy under Trump didn’t magically appear. It came from somewhere, but where? It came from the Obama/Biden administration, but that didn’t stop Trump from taking credit for it, just like he does praising himself for inheriting his father’s money. After Trump inherited a great economy from someone who actually did the work to repair it after another Republican fucked it up, it was Trump’s job to protect it and keep it growing. He failed.

Another fun fact: While President Biden did not create the inflation, supply-chain, or high gas prices, he’s president now. It’s his job to fix the problems he…wait for it…inherited.

This is how things typically work in this country. A Democrat, like Bill Clinton, inherits shit from a Republican, like George H.W. Bush. The Democrat repairs the problem and leaves a booming economy like Clinton left to George W. Bush. Then, the new Republican in the White House proceeds to fuck it up, like funding two wars with tax cuts for billionaire assholes. Then, a Democrat replaces him, like President Obama, repairs the economy, leaves it in great shape for another Republican, Donald Trump, to come in and fuck it up, like creating $2 trillion in debt by giving huge tax cuts to billionaire assholes (including himself).

The other way it works is that people have short memories. Look at Virginia. The last Republican governor had a problem with collecting free gifts. The last Republican president (sic) has policies based on hate that left the nation in a fragile state. The last Republican president tried to overturn the government. Then, within 10 months of that insurrection attempt, Virginia voters forget if all and elect a Republican whose proposals are all Trump policies and said that he “represents so many of the reasons he’s running.” Virginia, you fucked up.

If you want to continue blaming Biden for the issues Trump let him, then tell me, what did Biden do to create these problems?

Did Biden raise taxes on you? Nope. Did he raise gas prices? Nope. Did he shut down active pipelines? Nope. Did he do anything to stop products from being imported? Nope. Did vaccine and face mask mandates hurt the economy? Nope. They actually opened up more businesses.

Each of the current issues you’re screaming about today is from the pandemic which occurred under the Trump regime. Donald Trump politicized the pandemic and he even told Bob Woodward he downplayed the dangers of it.

President Biden just received these flaming bags of crap from Donald Trump and he hasn’t even had time to repair these problems. You are being impatient. Biden is a good president. It’s not like he tried to overturn an election or politicize a pandemic that increased the death toll by hundreds of thousands.

I just find it bizarre as hell that the people blaming President Biden for these issues are wanting to “reinstate” the guy who created them.
