Impeachment Trial

Inappropriate

cjones02052020

It’s a sad day in America and perhaps for the entire world.

Trump’s defenders love to argue that our founding fathers were afraid of impeachment and that a future Congress would abuse it in a partisan manner. They’re right. This was partisan as every single Republican in Congress voted against it and now the Republican majority in the United States Senate is about to give Donald Trump unchecked powers. Yes, our founding fathers were afraid of the impeachment clause being abused, but they still included it in the Constitution. Why? Because the one thing scarier than impeachment is a president with unlimited powers free to rule as an authoritarian.

Alan Dershowitz argued before the Senate that a president could engage in a quid pro quo for personal political benefit as long as the president believes his or her reelection is in the public interest. According to that belief, Donald Trump can steal an election if he believes he’s the chosen one and being president is in our national interest. Maybe he can just call off the election and imprison everyone who complains as he can rule that’s in the national interest. According to Dershowitz’s argument, Trump can ignore the other two branches. According to Dershowitz’s argument that Republicans are buying, if the president deems it in the national interest, he can lie to a grand jury about receiving oral sex from an intern in the White House and it’s not impeachable.

And here’s the thing, kids. They didn’t just rule that a president can do whatever the hell he wants, whenever the hell he wants, to whomever the hell he wants as long as he deems it’s in the national interest. No. They gave that power to the dumbest, most racist, most vile, most despicable and disgusting fuck ever to occupy the Oval Office. They gave it to a guy who was supported by Russia to steal the White House. They just gave it to a guy who was caught trying to steal the next election.

Democrats argue that since Republicans gave Trump this power, that a future Democratic president will have that power too. That’s not how Republicans see it because if they’re allowed to steal elections, then there won’t be another Democratic president. Look at the courts. Even though the nation is becoming more and more progressive, our courts will be controlled by conservatives for at least the next century. Mitch McConnell’s legacy will be crapping on us for decades. Look at the Senate. More Americans vote for Democratic candidates to fill the Senate, yet it’s controlled by Republicans.

Retiring Republican Senator Lamar Alexander has decided to vote against witnesses in the impeachment trial, which means the trial is probably over and the next step will be Donald Trump’s acquittal. But trust me, not having witnesses means he’ll never be exonerated.

Alexander said, “There is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven and that does not meet the United States Constitution’s high bar for an impeachable offense.”

He also said it was “inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation” but, “The Constitution does not give the Senate the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this year’s ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate.”

It’s illegal to ask a foreign country for help in your political campaign. Donald Trump didn’t go through the proper channels for an investigation into an American citizen. Donald Trump demanded a quid pro quo in his dealings with Ukraine. He withheld taxpayer-funded military aid to an ally at war with one of our enemies in exchange for an attack on a political opponent. He used taxpayer money to bribe. And none of this is impeachable? He’s guilty but it’s not impeachable?

If what Trump did isn’t impeachable, then what is? So far, asking Russia to help your campaign isn’t impeachable. Having Russians in your campaign headquarters to provide dirt isn’t impeachable. Violating emoluments and collecting payments from foreign nations isn’t impeachable. We already knew being a racist dividing the nation and defending Nazis isn’t impeachable. And now, bribery and extortion aren’t impeachable. During the 2016 campaign, Trump said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and he wouldn’t lose any supporters. According to the Senate, he wouldn’t go to jail either. At what point does Donald Trump invite his political opponents to 5th Avenue?

It’s a sad day for America because the cowards in the United States Senate has ruled that there is no longer a need for an America.

A Credible Fox

cjones02022020

The new argument on Fox News is that Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton can’t be trusted because he’s trying to sell a book.

A leak emerged from the White House that in a draft of Bolton’s upcoming book, Donald Trump told him firsthand that he was withholding military aid from Ukraine until they announced an investigation into the Bidens. The leak of the manuscript is interesting because it probably came from someone who works for Donald Trump and hates him. And honestly, no president has feuded with as many former staffers as Donald Trump has.

Yes, John Bolton wants to sell books. Here’s a fun fact: Everyone who has ever published a book wants to sell books. Here’s another fun fact: All those Fox News fucknuts arguing that you can’t trust John Bolton because he wants to sell books…have all written books!

Here’s the thing, kids. Regarding testifying, it doesn’t matter if Bolton has credibility. You ask that question after he testifies. You weigh his credibility along with his testimony. It doesn’t matter if John Bolton is a drug-dealing pimp. If he’s a witness, you let him testify. And, even if he was a drug-dealing pimp, he’d still have more credibility than Donald Trump.

But, I have questions for Fox News. If John Bolton isn’t credible, then why didn’t you point that out when he was advocating invading Iraq? Why didn’t you ask that when George W. Bush made him ambassador to the United Nations? Why didn’t you ask that when Donald Trump hired him to be his national security adviser? Or better yet, why didn’t you ask that question when YOU, Fox News, hired him as one of your conservative gaslighting experts? And, you could have asked that question at any point during the eleven freaking years he worked for you.

But then again, if you’re arguing he doesn’t have credibility and is a liar because he worked for Fox News, you might have a point.

Impeach The Galoot

cjones02012020

Late Sunday night, The New York Times reported that President (sic) Donald Trump told his national security adviser last August that he wanted to freeze nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine until that government agreed to investigate Democrats, including the Bidens. These are details leaked from John Bolton’s upcoming book titled, How I Survived Working For a Racist, Narcissistic Idiot.” No, that’s not the title. It was too long.

Democrats have been wanting former national security adviser Bolton to testify about what he knows, what the president knows and when did he know it. Republicans have been resisting. Funny thing, Republicans have accused Democrats of rushing the impeachment while Senate Majority Leader says he doesn’t want witnesses as that’ll prolong the Senate trial. But not being consistent is par for the course for Republicans.

These idiots trotted out Ken Starr to argue against the “age of impeachment,” Pam Bondi to argue against nepotism and corruption, and Alan Dershowitz to argue against every position he’s held previously. The rest of Trump’s legal goons argued that Democrats were mean and we shouldn’t trust liars. Seriously. How can you argue that Trump didn’t do anything wrong while resisting testimony from people who witnessed him doing nothing wrong?

A draft of the book was submitted to the White House on December 30 for a review before publishing, which is standard for current and former officials. The White House is the main culprit as the leaker of the book or someone inside who doesn’t like Trump, which means it could be anyone.

Mitch McConnell told his Republican colleagues not to panic over the details and to “take a deep breath,” which is usually not recommended to people with their heads up their own asses. We also learned that the White House has been sitting on the draft without EVER informing Republicans in the Senate. I guess Trump never heard the expression “help me help you.”

According to the book, Trump withheld taxpayer money to Ukraine contingent on them doing him a personal favor. And, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged to Bolton there was no basis to claims by Trump’s personal goon, Rudy Giuliani that our ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch was corrupt, and believed Rudy may have been acting on behalf of his other clients. It also links other officials to the corruption, including Attorney General William Barr and Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney.

The main thing this does, for now, is put pressure on Senate Republicans to vote for witnesses. Rushing the trial without them will now look like they’re engaging in the coverup, which they are but they don’t want that appearance.

Donald Trump tweeted that Bolton was lying to sell books. If anything, Bolton has been resisting testifying or even doing media interviews so he can hang onto his information to sell books. Hey, wanna find out how corrupt Trump is? Pay John Bolton $24.95 (or however much those books go for).

A Facebook friend of mine who’s a real pro-Trump troglodyte posted that John Bolton was lying. He didn’t base it on anything except that it must be a lie…because Trump is so honest. Remember when Donald Trump didn’t know about hush payments to porn stars and Playmates? Remember when Donald Trump didn’t know Lev Parnas? Donald Trump was found to be the liar in a he said/she said with Omarosa. It doesn’t matter whose word it is against Donald Trump’s, always bet against Trump. This is a guy who has told over 16,000 lies since he became president.

As revenge against Bolton, the White House could use the pre-publication review process, which has no set time frame, to delay or even kill the book’s publication or omit key passages. Though, like it is with executive privilege, it’ll be hard to argue for conversations to be omitted that Donald Trump himself has talked about. But delaying or killing the book will only happen if Trump is a vengeful person.

The one good thing Trump has going for him is that his cult will never discover the corrupt details Bolton’s revealing about him…because they’re in a book.

Testifying before the Senate, if it comes to that, may hurt Bolton’s book just as much as a delay in publishing. After eight hours on the stand, there may not be any bombshells left to tell. What sort of pomade does that mustache require anyway? I got nothing.

There are a few things I’m sure are in the book that we already know, like Donald Trump is a national security risk, is guilty, and should be removed from office as soon as possible.

I would be more than happy to witness the orange galoot’s eviction.

Spin On This

Several Republican senators said they were learning new information during the impeachment arguments from the House managers. They were shocked to learn new details about Trump’s corruption. Why is this? Because they don’t want real news or bother reading anything that might contradict their dogma.

It’s terrible that Trump supporters, members of his cult, don’t deal with facts. When you point out out a fact to them, like Donald Trump stole from a charity or said a veteran is only a hero because he got captured, it’s news to them. Try telling the cult Donald Trump has told over 16,000 lies since becoming president and watch the expression on their faces while they try to compress the information. But it’s terrible when United States Senators, people who took an oath to fight for and defend this nation, refuse to hear facts. A Republican senator, Martha McSally or Sally McMartha (we’ll figure it out right after we find Ukraine on a map) screams at a CNN reporter for asking her a question, insults him by calling him a “liberal hack,” then goes straight to Laura Ingraham’s show on Fox News to talk about how terribly the media treats her by asking questions.

I saw a post last week where a cultist was defending Republican senators like Lindsey Graham who kept walking out of the hearings, by stating Democrats had walked out too. Yeah, but the argument the House managers are making isn’t new to the Democrats. As I’m watching the hearings, I’m only hearing details I already knew. Why did I already know this? Because I haven’t had my head stuck in the sand.

On Saturday, I knew everything the Republican defense was laying out, and I don’t even watch Fox News. Of course, it helped that everything they said were lies Donald Trump had already said. There weren’t any new lies.

We also learned that in the absence of electronic gadgets, some senators are playing with fidget spinners. Senator Richard Burr handed them out to his colleagues and who spent their time, instead of paying attention to the House managers, trying to figure out how the spinners worked.

Republicans don’t just naturally excel at being ignorant and uninformed. They put a lot of work into it.

Smearing 1999

cjones01282020

I’m not an advocate for outing people. If someone is gay and they’re not ready to come out, then leave them alone. It’s personal and they know better for their personal situation than anyone else. I’m also not a fan of speculating about someone’s sexuality. I trust people at their word about their own life in regards to what’s none of my business.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has dealt with rumors and accusations for years about his sexuality. Washington is a place where a rumor can spread throughout the city for years and even decades before the rest of the nation gets a whiff. Lindsey Graham exhibits mannerisms that many consider being “gay” or metrosexual (which is a straight person who people say acts in a gay stereotype, like being tidy and dressing nice. Go figure). Lindsey Graham has never been married and is a dandy. No, not someone who is gay, but someone who is, well kinda metro. He probably irons his socks. For this, people have been accusing him of being gay for years. I don’t believe Lindsey Graham is gay because he says he’s not.

I don’t think it’s homophobic to accuse Graham of being gay unless you really hate gay people and you’re trying to ruin their party by sending Graham over. But it is rude and invasive. If he was gay, you’re not helping by trying to out him. If you want to fight him on his support of specific policies, then take him on the issues, not what you perceive to be his sexuality. But, accusing someone of being gay is NOT a smear though I’m sure most Republicans believe it is.

Stage actress Patti Lupone accused Graham of being gay last July. She tweeted her disdain for Graham’s support of Donald Trump’s racism when he went after four female Democratic Representatives saying they should “go back to where they came from.” She tweeted, “Lindsey Graham you are a disgrace. On a personal note, why don’t you just bite the bullet and come out. You might just come to your senses.”

Comedian Chelsea Handler tweeted in 2018 that Graham was supporting Trump because the White House was blackmailing him with a gay sex tape. I don’t think that’s fair and I strongly discourage spreading conspiracy theories. Graham’s support for Trump is easily explained by pointing out he doesn’t have convictions, pride, or principles. He’s a Republican. Duh.

Handler didn’t stop there. Last October, she tweeted, “If you’re wondering why Republicans took a sick day today, it’s probably because it’s #NationalComingOutDay. Looking at you @LindseyGrahamSC.” I don’t think that’s entirely fair. Why wasn’t she also looking at Mike Pence?

Representative Ilhan Omar (one of those Trump said should “go back to where she came from”) retweeted someone pondering what “they have on Graham,” and added that he’s “compromised.”

Bill Maher even did a monologue with 24 things you didn’t know about Lindsey Graham which included, “when I was in school, the kids would tease me by calling me ‘Lindsey,'” and “greatest advice my mother gave me was to stop waving my hands when I run,” and “greatest legislative accomplishment is naming a post office after Nathan Lane,” and “I employ over a dozen pool boys even though I don’t own a pool.”

People need to take the high ground and leave Graham alone about his sexuality. He says he’s straight so that means he’s straight. Sheesh! But then again, he also said a president doesn’t have to commit a crime to be impeached and now he says the opposite. Now I’m confused.

Another Graham joke on Maher’s list was, “For Halloween, I went as the Lindsey Graham from the Clinton impeachment.” It was that Lindsey Graham we saw yesterday courtesy of a video House Manager Jerry Nadler played during his presentation during Trump’s impeachment trial. I say that was the version we got yesterday because 2020 Lindsey Graham snuck out of the room.

Why should Graham have been in the room while video played contradicting his position today? He’s already stated that he’s not an impartial juror and his mind is already made up. He even said he doesn’t want to hear “a lot of witnesses,” that “he’s made up his mind,” and he’s ready to vote now. He said all this back in the middle of December. So, I’m trusting that the one witness 2020 Lindsay Graham doesn’t’ want to hear is 1999 Lindsey Graham.

1999 Lindsey Graham was a House Manager (the same job Nadler and Adam Schiff have today) and he was arguing to impeach Bill Clinton. One of the main Republican talking points is that you need a crime to impeach. Ignoring the facts that asking a foreign government to aid your political campaign and extortion are crimes, Republicans argue these articles of impeachment don’t list any broken laws. But according to 1999 Lindsey Graham, you didn’t need any broken laws. 1999 Lindsey Graham argued before the Senate, “What’s a high crime? It doesn’t even have to be a crime. It’s just when you start using your office and you’re acting in a way that hurts people, you’ve committed a high crime.”

Republicans are smearing those who oppose them. Yesterday, Senator Marsha Blackburn questioned the patriotism of veteran Alexander Vindman for testifying against Trump during the House impeachment hearings. Will they start bashing Lindsey Graham? Will 2020 Graham accuse 1999 Graham of being gay?

I don’t want to accuse Lindsey Graham of being gay and add to the rumors, but since he has NOT apologized for voting to impeach Bill Clinton and arguing before the Senate to convict him, I believe he needs to party like it’s 1999 and convict the president (sic) and throw him out of office.

Lindsey Graham is not gay. He’s also not a man with principles or someone who defends this nation against a corrupt president who’s a Russian asset.

An Idiot Hides Evidence

cjones01272020

We know Donald Trump is an idiot. But at times, it’s shocking just how transparent he is.

Often, an idiot reveals himself without an explicit statement. Like when a racist is too stupid to understand that the black-friend defense reveals they’re a racist, which is something every single Trump supporter does. But rarely do you find one who claims you can’t prove they’re a racist because they deleted all their racist comments from Facebook.

Trump does this at times. Like when he says he’s not a racist because there’s his “African-American,” or when he claims he’s innocent of sexually assaulting a woman because she doesn’t meet his standards. Trump is so transparent that his tell-tell is projection. When he accuses someone of something, it’s usually later revealed he’s guilty of the accusation. He often takes on the childish defense of “I’m rubber, you’re glue,” like he did in a debate with Hillary Clinton when she said he’s “Putin’s puppet.” I’ve written it before and I’ll do so again: I’m half expecting the revelation Sniffy was born in Kenya.

Trump’s defense against impeachment hasn’t been that he didn’t do what he’s accused of. Even Bill Clinton admitted his guilt of an affair. Trump never admits he did something wrong and those who support him are expected to follow his lead.

What Donald Trump did with Ukraine was ask a foreign government to help with his reelection. He asked a foreign government to go after a political opponent. He withheld military aid, approved by Congress, in an extortion scheme. Later, he asked China to investigate his political opponent. Donald Trump rephrases it but he’s admitted to all of this. At the very least, you would think he’d say “oops.” But no, we get “It was a perfect phone call.” No, it wasn’t. Now his fellow Republicans and lawyers have to go out and argue it was a “perfect phone call” and that it’s OK for a president to bribe a foreign government and ask them to meddle in an American election. Notice you don’t hear “no collusion” anymore? That’s because collusion is OK now.

Donald Trump’s administration has ignored subpoenas for documents and directed members of the administration not to respond to subpoena requests since the beginning of the impeachment process. While his lawyers and Republicans argue that he has the right to cite executive privilege, he hasn’t done so in this matter. Executive privilege doesn’t cover everything. It covers specific conversations and subjects, not anything and everything.

During Bill Clinton’s impeachment, his administration provided over 90,000 pages of documents. Even Richard Nixon turned over tapes and documents.

Trump said former National Security Adviser John Bolton couldn’t testify because he might reveal how Trump feels about other world leaders. Does it get worse than calling the Canadian Prime Minister “two-faced,” or Denmark’s Prime Minister “Nasty,” or even Kim Jong Un “Little Rocket Man?” That’s really only how executive privilege works if you’re a mean girl in high school.

Trump was probably thinking about how he felt about world leaders, who are often caught on tape making fun of him because he was at an international summit. He was asked how he thought the impeachment trial was going. In his answer, Donald Trump admitted to withholding evidence.

He said, “So, we’re doing very well. I got to watch enough. I thought our team did a very good job. But honestly, we have all the material. They don’t have the material.” And right then, he gave House Democrats more material to work with. Donald Trump has admitted to obstruction justice.

This would be like Bill Clinton saying he’ll survive impeachment because he paid for dry cleaning Monica’s blue dress, or Richard Nixon saying he won’t get caught because he taped over the Oval Office tapes with Burt Bacharach’s greatest hits.

Trump’s administration has gone from “no quid pro quo” to “get over it.” They even refuse to let the guy who made that admission testify. Now, they’ve gone from “no collusion” to Trump telling George Stephanoplous before this mess began that he’d accept help from a foreign government to “the president (sic) can do whatever he wants.”

Apparently, whatever he wants includes obstruction and concealing evidence. Donald Trump is guilty and a criminal who should be immediately frogmarched into the nearest federal prison with every Republican chucklefuck who’s participated in his corruption.

Donald Trump is an idiot who’s dumb enough to admit his guilt. But with Republicans controlling the Senate, it doesn’t matter.

Creative Notes: I had this idea a few weeks ago. I even posted the rough here. But yesterday, Trump’s comment brought it back with me changing the text. Another creative note: Thanks, Quannah for “Chucklefuck.”

Midnight Mitch

cjones01262020

I could be wrong as I lost count, but I think Democrats went 0-13 in votes last night/this morning.

Why are the hearings going as late as 2:00 a.m? Why the rush? Originally, Mitch McConnell, who’s acquired the nickname “Midnight Mitch” to go along with “Moscow Mitch” and “Cocaine Mitch,” ruled that the prosecution and defense only had 24 hours, to be presented in two days, for opening arguments. After some Republicans expressed concerns that the rule would make it harder for them to hide the fact they’re helping Trump engage in a coverup, McConnell gave the two sides three days instead of two. Donald Trump’s confusion was how many hours there are in a day (in case you’re a Republican, 24).

This still pushed the trial to go as late as 2:00 a.m. this morning. Keep in mind, a lot of these Senators are extremely old. They’re required to be at their desk, not engage in any conversations, and without any electronic devices. Basically, they’re all doing something in a trial over Donald Trump that Donald Trump could NEVER do.

The biggest arguments have been over witnesses. The Republicans don’t want any. For weeks, we’ve heard that four moderate Republicans may join Democrats in voting for witnesses, but from what we saw last night, that’s not going to happen.

McConnell is hoping Americans don’t pay attention because none of this helps Donald Trump. Proof of that is the fact they don’t want witnesses and Trump’s legal team engaged in spreading huge lies while never arguing for Trump’s “innocence.” Yesterday, Republicans only argued over procedure. Witnesses and documents only prove that Donald Trump is guilty. Guilty of something Republicans spent the past three years telling us was a crime (no collusion), and now are convinced that asking a foreign nation to meddle in our election isn’t a big deal.

Republicans continue to argue that Donald Trump as president (sic) has executive privilege, despite the fact he’s never exercised that during the impeachment. The only privilege Trump has are sycophantic, cowardly Republicans who place cult of personality over country.

McConnell is hoping Americans go to sleep while the trial continues. He already has Republicans sleeping on it.

Damn Skippy The Fix Is In

CNN01192020

Here’s your cartoon for CNN’s weekly newsletter, Provoke/Persuade. Please sign up to get these in your inbox every Sunday for the rest of your life.

This is very similar to the oath cartoon I did last week but in this version, I give them a different oath. It’s an oath where they promise to be corrupt. The trial has started today and Mitch McConnell has already broken his oath.

McConnell wants to ram the entire thing through so that the bulk of it happens late at night, perhaps until 1:00 a.m. He’s hoping Americans stop paying attention. If voters pay attention, it’s not good for Republicans.

It’s not good because the majority doesn’t just want to hear witnesses. A majority wants Trump removed from office. It’s not good for Republicans for Americans to pay attention because they may hear the evidence, and Donald Trump is guilty. Donald Trump should be removed from office. The facts don’t help Donald Trump or Republicans.

Republicans have the majority in the Senate and they still need to fix the trial. They violated their oath before they ever took it.

Yesterday’s cartoon was on Trump goons. In a way, this one is too as each of the 53 Republicans in the United States Senate has chosen to participate in Trump’s coverup. Each of those senators has chosen to be a Trump goon.

Premature Republicans

cjones12182019

Is anyone surprised that Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and other Senate Republicans are promising to violate an oath before they even swear to it? Of course not as these are the same Republicans who have given up on everything they used to believe in. Remember when they claimed to believe in family values, the military, patriotism, reduced debt, and protecting our nation from Russia?

Mitch McConnell didn’t have any problem violating Senate rules and the Constitution when he refused to hold a hearing for President Obama’s last Supreme Court nominee and then handing that nomination to Donald Trump. McConnell didn’t have any problem with blocking Obama’s nominations to lower courts either. While Republicans claim Obama left vacancies for them to fill, the truth is that only 28.6% of his judicial nominees were approved by the Republican-led Senate during the last two years of his presidency. While appearing on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News, McConnell took credit for blocking Obama’s nominees after Hannity wondered aloud why Obama left so many vacancies. And then McConnell cackled which will probably keep me up at nights for several years to come.

Senators are required to make a new oath of office before an impeachment trial. Article I, section 3, clause 6 of the Constitution sets out that senators sitting on a trial of impeachment “shall be on Oath or Affirmation.”

According to Rule XXV of Senate Rules in Impeachment Trials, all senators must make the following oath: “I solemnly swear [or affirm, as the case may be] that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of [the person being impeached], now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws: So help me God.”

McConnell told Hannity, “Everything I do during this, I’m coordinating with the White House counsel. There will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this.” This was probably followed by more cackling. He said he will be working in “total coordination with the White House counsel’s office and the people representing the president in the well of the Senate.”

Lindsey Graham has stated he has no intention of being an impartial juror. He has stated a refusal to listen to the evidence and that there shouldn’t even be a trial. Back in 1998, Graham scolded his colleagues for making decisions before the trial. He said, “Let the facts do the talking,” and “don’t decide the case before the case is in.”

Graham and McConnell have no problems being hypocrites and telling us out loud that they plan to conduct a sham of a trial. Since they don’t have any problem violating an oath let’s hope their voters do.

Why vote for a politician who promises to break promises? If they are announcing they will violate an oath to be impartial, why would anyone believe they’ll keep their oath to protect the United States Constitution? I don’t.

Senators like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham won’t keep their promises to protect the Constitution, the nation, or even the presidency. If anything, they’re promising to betray the nation.

They are promising the trial will be a sham just as they are as United States Senators.
