Roe V Wade

Alito’s Permission

The decision about to be handed down by the Supreme Court allowing states to outright ban abortion is a sexist one made mostly by men. These men have made up their minds about what a woman can or can’t do with their bodies. They’re not legislating what men can or can’t do with their bodies. Four of the five justices in the majority on this are Catholics. While 23 percent of the nation identifies as Catholic, six out nine of the current Supreme Court justices practice Catholicism.

Conservatives will point out that one of the justices voting to ban abortion is a woman. Yes, Amy Coney Barrett is a woman and one of the Catholics on the bench. But, she’s not just a Catholic. She’s also a member of People of Praise, a network of ecumenical intentional communities. What the hell is an intentional community? Think of it like a commune where everyone works toward the same goals, but spread out across the nation…and fanatical. It’s a cult. Many members do live together and seek advice/permission from leadership on everything from their household budget to whom they should marry. Members agree to submit to the leadership of a spiritual director and affirm a 181-word “covenant” that they frequently recite together. “We will serve one another and the community as a whole in all needs: spiritual, material, financial,” it reads in part. One former member of the cult said “The social scene was extremely Republican, very much Rush Limbaugh.” Nice.

For a story about the “covenant,” The New York Times attempted to interview current members of the group who didn’t respond to requests for interviews or declined to speak, citing concerns about privacy. Isn’t it special that the cult Amy Coney Barrett is a member of is concerned about PRIVACY? No, wait. They’re only concerned about the cult’s privacy.

In People of Praise, women are encouraged to work and have careers, but also to be subservient to men in a Christian tradition. Women can not hold leadership positions in the cult except as “woman leaders,” which is a position that teaches other women about their roles in the cult. Until 2017, “woman leader” was called “handmaiden.” They changed it after a TV adaptation of “A Handmaid’s Tale” gave the term a negative impression kinda in the same way Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, and Republicans eschew the term “Nazi.”

In the directory for one of the cult’s divisions in South Bend, Indiana, Amy Coney Barrett is listed as a “handmaid.” Maybe they just don’t use the term “handmaid” in public.

People are comparing this abortion ban to “A Handmaid’s Tale.” Meanwhile, we literally have a Supreme Court justice who identifies as a handmaiden. I find it incredulous that Amy Coney Barrett will ever cast a vote that would get her kicked out of this cult she’s been a member of since birth. A religious cult has a vote on the Supreme Court.

A document from the group titled “Men and Women in the People of Praise” says in one part that being the head of the household does not give a husband a license to dominate, but a wife “should take her husband’s direction seriously.” A husband’s responsibilities include “correcting” his wife should she stray from the proper path.

Of course, one of the Catholics on the court is Samuel Alito, who is writing the majority opinion banning abortions, arguing the word “abortion” is not in the Constitution. Based on that logic, everything that’s not mentioned in the Constitution from cars to airplanes to movie theaters to birth control to gay marriage to pop rocks are unconstitutional. Alito is “correcting” the Constitution and ordering the women in this nation not to stray from the proper path.

I wonder if People of Praise are as opposed to pop rocks as much as they are against gay marriage. Yes, Amy Coney Barrett believes gay marriage is a sin. Are sins constitutional? In fact, children of same-sex marriages are not allowed into the cult’s private schools. Is that sort of discrimination constitutional?

My point here is, we’re in trouble. While this decision wasn’t voted on entirely by men, you gotta take into account that the one woman voting to destroy abortion rights for women is in a male-dominated fundamentalist religious cult.

Creative note: I sketched out nine cartoons on the abortion case Thursday. And, I actually like most of them. I showed them all to Laura, one of my copy editors, and she said I should do a series and draw each one. I don’t think so but you will eventually see each of them.

Music note: I was able to listen to the entire Blue Album from Weezer while coloring this cartoon, plus six more songs from the Green Album and Maladroit.

Alabama Abortion Ban

cjones05192019

Alabama is not trying to ban all abortions in their state. They’re trying to ban them nationwide.

Just in case the restrictive, extreme, and unconstitutional efforts currently underway in Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, and the four other states attacking abortion rights don’t push the issue fast enough to the Supreme Court (now, with even more fucknuts), the Alabama abortion ban will surely fast track it.

Make no mistake about it. Conservatives are always inventing ways to deny access to women’s health in their states, but what they’d doing today, from giving timelines to outright bans is only going on now because of Donald Trump’s two new SCOTUS appointees. Now you know why Republicans sacrificed all their principles and former positions to steal a seat from President Obama.

The new law in Alabama, signed late yesterday afternoon by their governor, doesn’t even make exceptions in the case of rape and incest. If a woman pursues an abortion out of state, somehow, Alabama intends to track her down and throw her in prison.

There is a reason Alabama is one of the least-educated states in the nation. Educated people tend to be more enlightened. Don’t look for enlightenment from the majority in Alabama. Enlightened people don’t grant more rights to rapists than to their victims.

And to my niece and her two daughters, who I dedicate this cartoon to, GTFO.

Georgia Heartbeats

cjones04072019

Ever since the Supreme Court case Roe v Wade made abortion legal in 1973, wingnuts have been doing everything they can to turn the clock back to 1873.

Kentucky and Mississippi have recently passed six-week abortion bans. Republican lawmakers in Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio, and Florida are considering similar bills. Instead of mandating no abortions after six weeks, Georgian troglodytes have passed a ban outlawing abortion if a heartbeat can be detected. They’re calling it the “fetal heartbeat” bill.

The governor, who recently won election after he removed thousands of black Georgians off the voter rolls and oversaw the election from his position as Secretary of State, will sign the bill after the legislative session ends, which is today. The law will take effect in 2020.

The exceptions to the law are cases that involve rape or incest on the condition that a police report is filed. There is also an exception when a doctor determines the pregnancy would cause death or bodily harm to the mother or the fetus would not be able to live after birth.

The law will be challenged in court by the ACLU, and celebrities along with the Writers Guild of America are encouraging Hollywood to cease all productions in the state, such as The Walking Dead. There’s a joke in there somewhere. Georgia had 455 TV or film productions shot in the state in 2018, representing $2.7 billion in direct spending.

This law will become one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the nation as a heartbeat can often be detected as early as six weeks, which is often earlier than many women even know they’re pregnant. For now, abortion is legal in Georgia within the first 20 weeks. And, if the woman is pregnant from rape, it puts additional pressure on her to file a police report. The next step will be a law mandating that the raped, pregnant woman wear a scarlet letter.

The AP reports that the measure was approved by 92 votes, just one vote more than the majority needed to pass out of the 180-member House. Republicans don’t care about having a consensus when it comes to abortion. They don’t really care about anything when it comes to the issue as long as they can ban it and force their fundamental religious beliefs on the rest of the nation.

They don’t care that they stole a Supreme Court seat in their effort to ban it. They don’t care that they had to change the rules of Senate confirmation for SCOTUS justices because Donald Trump isn’t going to nominate consensus candidates. They don’t care that they put an accused sexual abuser on the court. They don’t care that they have to sacrifice their ethics and morals for Trump in order to ban abortion. They don’t care about facts as they still use the debunked “gotcha” videos from Project Veritas that attempted to frame Planned Parenthood for selling aborted baby body parts. They don’t care that a terrorist shot up a Planned Parenthood clinic, killing three people based on the Project Veritas hoax. They don’t care that this will increase the maternal mortality rates in Georgia, where it’s already one of the worst in the country.

They also don’t care about the actual babies because after they’re born, they do everything in their power to deny them welfare, school lunches, medication, health insurance, education, etc. They only care about their religious morality, when it fits, and legislating what women can do with their bodies.

If men could give birth then abortion would have been the very first Amendment in our Constitution…unless Viagra had been invented at that time, then maybe the second. Today, this nation wouldn’t have a “pro-choice” movement. People would be shot for merely suggesting a man carry a child to term. Abortion protesters would be banned from clinics. Nobody would be bombing or shooting clinics. The first abortion doctor would be on Mt. Rushmore and replace Lincoln on the five dollar bill. Sure, Lincoln freed the slaves, but Doctor Everythingsgonnabealright got me out of shooting a six-pound human out of my pee hole. “You detected a heartbeat?” Are you insane?

If men could give birth, no woman would be allowed to legislate abortion. go legislate your own nether regions.

Republicans believe abortion shouldn’t be performed if a heartbeat is detected. I have a similar belief. Abortion should not be legislated or decided by anyone who doesn’t have a uterus.
