Trump Toys With The Border

cjones11052018

When Trump talks about the “caravan invasion,” he’s not trying to protect the nation. He’s only trying to get you to vote for a Republican. This has nothing to do with border security. This is an election trick.

Since Trump and the Republicans don’t have any accomplishments to run on, they have to run on lies (Republicans will save pre-existing conditions coverage) and fear (scary brown people coming to kill you and steal your lake cottage).

Trump and Republicans talk about how the caravan is staged, but if anything is staged, it’s him sending the military to the border days before the election. There’s no invasion for the military to meet, and if there were, the invaders would be moms in flip-flops and children with milk bottles. The military is not police, and they can’t detain anyone. There’s doubt the caravan will even make it to our border.

The biggest threat the military faces on the border is actually domestic. Leaked documents reveal that the military is concerned with violent protesters from the left and the right, and volunteer militias who may become violent and who have stolen military gear in the past.

From the papers, the military is preparing to defend against an “estimated 200 unregulated armed militia members currently operating along the Southwest Border.” There are reports of these “patriotic” unregulated militias stealing National Guard equipment during deployments.

This is an abuse of our military by Trump. Treating the military like toy soldiers you can play with for an election stunt is much more disrespectful than kneeling during the National Anthem. Trump said the military should treat people throwing rocks as if they have rifles, and was authorizing soldiers to shoot the rock throwers. The next day, he claimed he never said that.

What we need to see is just how much of a crisis this “caravan invasion” is after Tuesday. Will the military still be there? Will Trump keep screaming and lying about it at the rate he is now? Will it even be an issue? Will Trump pretend it’s the first he’s ever heard of it?

Trump has shown us there’s no depth he won’t sink to and nothing he won’t abuse for his own selfish gain. Instead of sending 5,000 soldiers to the border he should be sending 5,000 lawyers and judges to help with processing refugee applications.

Trump believes the military is his own personal toy. What he’s revealing is that his brain is emptier than Mr. Potato Head’s.

Troops Meet The Caravan Invasion

cjones11022018

One sure way to tell that the caravan “invasion” isn’t dangerous to the United States is that Republicans have to lie about it. If it’s actually so bad, then why can’t they be honest and only deliver the facts?

Trump campaigned on hatred toward immigrants. He accused Mexico of sending us rapists and murderers when he announced his campaign. It’s red meat for a base of stupid people who believe immigration is the greatest danger facing our nation, and not say, a friend to white supremacists in the White House.

Republicans and Donald Trump tell us it’s being funded by George Soros and Democrats. That’s the same rhetoric a white supremacist terrorist used to justify killing eleven Jews in a Pittsburgh synagogue last Saturday.

Trump has claimed there are gang members and even people from the Middle East in the caravan. He and the GOP state it’s a national emergency and an invasion. Now, they’re even claiming they’re bringing diseases like smallpox.

Trump has ordered 5,200 troops to man the border to protect us from this invasion. That is an abuse of our military. Our troops should not be used as election props. The caravan is over 2,000 miles away from our border, and they’re traveling by foot. So, why are the troops at the border now? Let’s see if they’re still there after Election Day.

This is not an invasion. These are mostly women and children seeking asylum. Do we really need an army to meet mothers wearing flip-flops and carrying babies? Trust me. After walking over 2,000 miles, they’re not going to feel like fighting.

As for carrying diseases, the last naturally occurring case of smallpox was in 1977.

There is no proof that gangs are in this caravan. There’s also not any proof that Muslims from the Middle East are trying to gain entry to the U.S. from Guatemala. Buy a map, idiots.

Republicans also keep fluctuating the numbers in the caravan. Some put it as high as 14,000. Yesterday, it was reported the number has decreased to less than 4,000. Most people in the caravan will not make it to the U.S. border. The last caravan was in April, and only about 150 migrants from that caravan made it to our border. We need the army to meet 150 migrants?

Another point you don’t hear much about is that these migrants are coming here legally. If you listen to Republicans, they’re all either sneaking or just crashing through Trump’s nonexistent border wall (which he claims is under construction but it’s not). These people will apply for refugee status. They have a legal right to do that. If someone walks over 2,000 miles to request asylum, we should hear them out. Not every immigrant can pose naked in a magazine and catch the attention of a billionaire who likes to trade up with wives.

Trump is also threatening to end birthright citizenship by executive order. He can’t do that. That’s protected in the Constitution. But, he doesn’t really intend to do that. It’s just good election propaganda. His base will love it. He doesn’t care that he’s lying. His lies have only grown more preposterous as the election nears. He also claimed we’re the only nation that grants birthright citizenship when there’s actually over 30 who do. Trump can get away with these lies because his base doesn’t research, and they don’t have enough integrity to demand honesty from their leader.

Walking thousands of miles on the slim hope of providing a better future for your children is integrity. What is lacking in integrity is exploiting people who need help so you can drum up fear and paranoia in your already frightened and paranoid little base of racists. It also takes gall to continue to exploit this and continue to lie and repeat the rhetoric of pipe bombers and synagogue shooters after what happened last week. Donald Trump was still exploiting the issue the day of the Pittsburgh massacre. He didn’t even pause to catch his breath.

We are the United States and can do better than using women and children refugees for exploitation. The people who do that are no better than the gangs who prey on them during their journey.

I like to think America is better than that. Hopefully, next Tuesday, America proves it is.

Caravan Of Haters

cjones10242018

As a caravan of migrants heads north toward the United States from Honduras, Donald Trump and Republicans are using it as a campaign issue to scare their supporters and give the GOP some momentum going into the midterms. Republicans are accusing Democrats and George Soros of funding the migrants, but if anyone has an incentive to finance their thousands-mile journey on foot, it’s Donald Trump.

The issue needs to be taken into perspective. The Republicans are trying to scare voters over 2,000 migrants seeking sanctuary in the United States. While making 2,000 seem like a huge number, Border Patrol arrests an average of over 42,000 a month. While posting no serious risk to the security of the U.S., they make great campaign fodder for stupid people.

People travel in these caravans as there’s safety in numbers from gangs, rapists, and others who prey on the desperate, which is exactly what Trump is doing. And these people are desperate to leave their homes and walk thousands of miles with their children on the slim chance they’ll receive refugee status in a nation with a racist president who really hates brown people.

This caravan isn’t a freak occurrence. There was one last April of about 1,200 people, with only 150 reaching the U.S. border.

Trump is also using the issue to threaten to withhold aid to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, which is like banning birth control to stop abortions (Republicans still don’t understand that). The aid we give those third-world nations is to help bring stability. Removing it will make their situations worse, and land more people at our doorstep. He is also threatening to shut down our border with Mexico, which would halt trade. Finally, he’s warning that he’ll send the U.S. military to secure the border, which is probably illegal because the military is barred from performing civilian law enforcement within the United States (though they can provide logistics and other support to Border Patrol).

Trump is scaring his base of reprehensible stupid people over a handful of migrants two countries away, traveling on foot, most of which will never make it to the U.S. border. But then again, they scared these dumb people over the threat of taco trucks on every corner.

But, this is the new normal where stupidity and lies work, such as claiming Democrats want the immigrants here in time to vote in November. Being horrible works too as Trump has yet to offer any compassion to those running for their lives. For those who do arrive with children, his administration will surely separate them and throw more babies in detention centers.

Other than votes from the most hateful among us, Trump and the xenophobic Stephen Millers and John Boltons of his administration will use the issue to further isolate the United States.

Illegal immigration is a serious issue, but it’s not the most important or dangerous that our nation is facing. But, it’s great for making scapegoats when you’re enacting a racist agenda.

If you really want to see a mob of angry people that are dangerous to the United States, go to a Trump rally (I have. It’s bloodcurdling). Donald Trump’s supporters, the most fanatical, are the greatest danger our nation is facing right now, as they’re willing to tear it apart over a cult of stupid personality.

Personally, I’d rather have the caravan.

Ortega Wants Names

crsta08312018

This cartoon first ran Friday, August 31, 2018, in The Costa Rica Star.

What is it with strongman-type leaders, dictators, and dictator wannabes that they feel they can force their will on people who don’t have to bend to their demands?

Daniel Ortega, the president of Nicaragua whose wife is vice president, is demanding Costa Rica to supply him with the names of each of the over 20,000 Nicaraguan refugees currently in that nation. He wants “a list of people seeking asylum,” to point out who committed crimes during protests and should face justice.

Ortega promises they won’t be harmed, and he’s only looking for the lawbreakers. Yeah, sure. You really don’t want someone of the likes of Ortega to define lawbreaking.

During his press conference with Donald Trump in Helsinki, Russia’s Vladimir Putin told members of the American press not to “disregard these issues and don’t think about this anymore again,” when asked if he had anything on to hold over Trump. The U.S. press doesn’t take orders from U.S. politicians, less enough one from Russia.

Turkey’s Recep Erdogan has demanded the United States extradite a Turkish cleric he’s accusing of engineering a coup against him. The United States doesn’t typically deport people to face death sentences.

Donald Trump is demanding that The New York Times provide him with the name of the anonymous writer of the op-ed from his staff, accusing him of being incompetent. He’s floating the idea of the Justice Department going after the free press to find out sources, without identifying any laws that were broken other than it was “treason” to criticize him.

Ortega, Putin, Erdogan, and Trump aren’t interested in what’s best for their people, only their self-interest. The world would be a better place without any of them.

The U.S. will not be turning over any clerics to Turkey, the American press isn’t going to take journalism advice from Putin, and The New York Times will never give names to Trump (not sure about the Justice Department thing). And, Costa Rica is not going to any names to Ortega. That would go against international law.

When authoritarians start asking for names, that’s when they need to be told to sit and spin.

Costa Rica Nazis

crsta08242018

This cartoon was first published August 24, 2018, in The Costa Rica Star.

There were several protests in Costa Rica by white nationalists and even a few Neo-Nazis protesting against refugees coming to their country to escape the violence in Nicaragua. Most people in Costa Rica are welcoming the refugees and trying to help them. They know they don’t want to be there sleeping in a park permanently. Most people want to go home.

Donald Trump’s rhetoric has encouraged racists to come out into the open in the United States. Now, I believe it’s happening internationally.

Donald Trump is a vile and horrible person. Don’t be like Trump.

Trumped By Judges

cjones02112017

Donald Trump is treated unfairly. Don’t take my word for it. His supporters will tell you he’s treated unfairly. Donald Trump will tell you he’s treated unfairly.

The media is mean to him. The networks treat him unfairly. Saturday Night Live is cruel. His fellow Republicans weren’t fair during the primaries. The entire system was unfair. The debates weren’t fair. Pictures of him aren’t fair. Every day someone writes to tell me I’m treating him unfairly. Every. Freaking. Day. Often those people are newspaper editors.

Even those close to him are treated unfairly. His wife is mocked for stealing a speech. Not fair. His sons weren’t allowed to profit off his presidency. Just mean. His daughter is having her name trashed because a clothing store doesn’t want to sell her Chinese-made fashion line. How cruel.

This is 2017 but we still have a lot of progress to make before this nation will stop discriminating against and persecuting powerful famous white billionaires.

One of the most famous instances of Trump whining about being treated unfairly was when he said a judge wasn’t fit to oversee a Trump University lawsuit because he was Mexican (actually born in Indiana but of Mexican parents). So we’re mean to racist white billionaires. Have you ever heard of a mistrial being declared because a judge was white? I haven’t.

Donald Trump is a racist. He’s often given clues by referring to groups as “the,” as in THE Mexicans, THE Hispanics, THE gays, THE etc. He even once referred to a man as “my African American.” Nice.

If you say someone isn’t fit to do something, like preside over a trial, because of their ethnicity, you’re not going to get much more racist than that unless you start burning crosses in the guy’s yard. Donald Trump is a racist.

Of course Donald Trump doesn’t think he’s a racist. David Duke claims he’s not a racist. But trust me, Trump. You’re a racist. Do conservatives believe one has to drop N-bombs to actually be a racist?

So at the very least you can say the system isn’t treating Trump unfairly by race because the three judges who ruled against him on Thursday are white. If we’re going by Trump’s stereotype, they were very fit and qualified to judge him.

I guess it’s too bad for Trump that his bigoted travel ban has to go back to court. Trump even said “he’ll see them in court,” which is where one normally sees judges.

Perhaps Trump wouldn’t have these sort of problems if he wasn’t so racist, and if he could put a little more time and effort into an executive order so that it comprises more than 140 characters.

Creative note: I had writer’s block tonight. I started working around 2:00 AM and then I trashed the cartoon. I wasn’t in love with it. That doesn’t mean this one is great. I think my creative wall showed up because I really felt good about a couple of my cartoons this week. So maybe I felt I couldn’t keep my personal momentum going. Maybe I got too cocky. Maybe it’s just one of those days.

I tell people we’re not going to run out of issues with Trump in the White House but ideas are another matter. I’ll just do it again tomorrow.

Skittles

cjones09212016

I almost drew a Skittles cartoon last night but I wanted to see how much news coverage it received today. It received a LOT. One of my best friends and fellow cartoonist tagged me on Facebook baiting me to draw a Skittles cartoon. I almost passed but I couldn’t resist.

Donald Trump Jr. posted a meme on Twitter (say no to memes, people) which posted a picture of Skittles, and asked “If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you. Would you take a handful?” First off, I wouldn’t eat any because I don’t like Skittles. They taste like a rainbow-covered ass. Second, Junior was using this argument to refuse Syrian refugees from entering our nation. Junior, people are not candy. The child famously photographed in the ambulance after a bombing in Aleppo is not to be equated with candy. The child who washed up dead on a beach in Greece is not to be equated with candy.

Even the Wrigley Company which owns Skittles was disturbed by the failed analogy and they rebuked Junior by telling him refugees are not to be equated with candy.

Trump has proven himself to be hateful and heartless. He’s raised his children to share his world outlook. Junior is a spoiled-rich frat boy with an executive position handed to him by his father. Last week Junior said the media has been Clinton’s “number one surrogate,” letting her slide “on every indiscrepancy, on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out” of the way. He added, “If Republicans were doing that, they’d be warming up the gas chamber right now.” These are terrible people, Junior specifically.

The analogy also fails as you have a very slim chance of being killed by a refugee. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning, bitten by a shark, or Donald Trump contributing to a charitable cause out of his own pocket.

With the extremely low odds of being killed by a refugee a bowl of Skittles doesn’t cut it. You would need three Olympic-sized swimming pools full of Skittles with three of them being poisonous to accurately compare it to the odds of being killed by a refugee. Taste that rainbow.

I’m sure the analogy will work with Trump supporters. We already know they’re racist and low-informed. It’s not like they need facts to support their candidate. Skittles’ slogan is “taste the rainbow.” Trump and his people are afraid of rainbows.

Here’s a piece of irony for you: The photograph of the Skittles used without permission in the tasteless meme was taken…wait for it….by a refugee.
