As you know, most of the roughs you see here are ideas submitted to CNN. Some are chosen and some are passed over. But there are roughs that are just for me, drawn so I can see how they kinda turn or just when I’m being indecisive.

This was me being indecisive. I roughed this out last Saturday morning after the assassination of Shinzo Abe. I knew there were going to be a lot of memorial cartoons with the Rising Sun, but you know me. I hate that shit. So, I was taking a few shots (sorry) at a few different ideas. This is one of them. My CNN cartoon was already done and this was not sent to them. The cartoon I ended up doing has a similar image to this one.

I didn’t even finish this rough. I just wasn’t feeling it though I felt it was a decent idea. The was to include a lot of American franchises that are popular in Japan. I even researched it.

This was on Boris and it was sent to CNN. My editor for the week, Jane, liked it while also liking another. I liked the other better and I pushed for that. I wasn’t too crazy about this. I’m not a big fan of simple metaphors even though they get the job done.

This is the one I pushed for and Jane said yes. I enjoy working with Jane.

Good question, right? How do we know he’s not lying?

Sorry, there are not a lot of roughs in this batch. Blame Jane. I only had to draw four before she chose one. Next week’s batch will be quite large. You can’t see those yet because I’m planning to turn at least two into official cartoons. I’m just don’t know which ones yet. I’m indecisive.
