Occasionally I will do something for a foundation that’s non-political. Yesterday morning the Barbara Bush Foundation For Family Literacy asked me to draw a cartoon for George H.W. Bush’s birthday and on the fact he planned to jump out of a plane again. The catch for me was they wanted it that day. They gave me the idea which was based on an illustration I drew for them last year. They’re good to work with and it was a lot of fun despite the drawing being needed on the same day I had two other commissions with a one-day deadline.
Another part of this was that I had to keep it a secret. I don’t know if that was so the cartoon would be a surprise for President Bush (like he follows my work) or if it was a national security issue. Either way, it’s pretty cool that I was in on a big secret.
It’s also cool they put aside the fact I’m this ultra-left wing-liberal (or they don’t know). But like I said before, this was entirely non-political. Hey, I can get behind making people literate.
