Freedom

Iranian MAGA

Republicans are noisy about free speech but all about oppressing statements they don’t want to hear. Republicans and MAGAts are all over Twitter celebrating Elon Musk bringing “free speech” back to the platform, which to them includes conspiracy theories, lies, covid misinformation, and organizing terrorist attacks by white nationalists in order to overturn the government and install a fascist Oompa Loompa as a dictator. But free speech-loving right-wingers were all behind Donald Trump saying, “Fire that sonofabitch” regarding NFL athletes who kneeled during the national anthem. They’re all supportive of the NFL blackballing a Super Bowl quarterback who protests racism. They’re all behind the governor of Florida in his attempts to literally outlaw “wokeism,” as he says his state is where “woke goes to die,” and a court just ruled against his attempts to make it illegal for corporations to have “woke” policies.

It seems that Republicans are all about free speech but only if the speech is what they want to hear. It seems they would love us to be a nation that bans free speech and the right to protest, like Iran.

Iran is an oppressive fundamentalist government. Protests have been erupting in cities across the nation since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in custody after being arrested for not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. The United Nations says over 300 people have been killed and over 14,000 have been arrested during the protests. Now, the government is giving the death penalty to protesters in a nation that’s already murdered over 400 of its citizens with its death penalty.

The protests have even reached the World Cup in Qatar as players for the Iranian national team refused to sing the nation’s national anthem before its game against England. Some players reported that government officials threatened members of the players’ families, saying they would receive “violence and torture” if they refused to sing at the next game or engaged in any protests against the regime. When the next game came up, against Wales, the players sang the national anthem. Smile unless you want a headless grandmother.

A source told CNN that players were promised “presents and cars” if they played well, but that switched to violent threats against their families. The source also claimed, “In the last game against Wales, the regime sent over hundreds of these actor supporters in order to create a false sense of support and favor amongst the fans. For the next game against the U.S., the regime is planning to significantly increase the number of actors into the thousands.” That game is happening today at 2 p.m.

I wonder where Iran got the idea to put actors in the stands to give a false impression of support? That’s a trick Donald Trump did when he announced his 2016 presidential campaign. I hope the Iranian actors are paid more than what Trump paid his fake supporters, which was $50.

Here in the United States, our government doesn’t threaten athletes for protesting the government and refusing to participate in the national anthem while it’s played before games. Our government only intimidates them and coordinates with leagues to have them blackballed.

For four years, Donald Trump was the federal government. While he was president (sic), he called for NFL players who refused to stand during the national anthem to be fired. The NFL was listening and Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback who took his team to the Super Bowl, didn’t receive even one official tryout with an NFL team from 2017 until this year, which was with the Las Vegas Raiders (who didn’t sign him). Not only has no team signed the guy, even to a backup position, but 31 of the 32 teams won’t even look at him. And it took six years for one of them to do that.

The NFL has banned a player for silently protesting while allowing another to continue playing despite over two dozen accusations from women of sexual harassment and sexual assault, even after the player, DeShaun Watson, settled 20 lawsuits with his accusers. The NFL did suspend the guy for 11 games with a fine of $5 million after the Cleveland Browns signed him to a $230 million contract.

We are better than Iran, but I don’t know how much better.

Independence Day 2022

Is it ironic or coincidental that Independence Day arrives this year just as the Supreme Court destroyed independence for women to make decisions regarding their own bodies?

I don’t like holiday cartoons but I usually do one for Independence Day because it’s a great tool to make a point about freedom and hypocrisy in this country. Since I did a cartoon on Juneteenth, I feel I should do one for July 4th.

There’s a lot of hypocrisy that comes with celebrating Independence Day. For example, right-wing cartoonists who supported Donald Trump’s insurrection will publish red, white, and blue rah-rah flag-waving cheerleading bullshit on July 4th. These goons are the same goons who defend Ashli Babbitt and cry for her. This is like celebrating the Fourth of July while worshipping Benedict Arnold.

Come to think of it, if you’re a Trump supporter, you shouldn’t be celebrating the Fourth of July. You supported an insurrection against this nation. You supported the Big Lie that democracy doesn’t work and Trump had the election stolen from him. You supported motherfuckers who carried the Confederate flag through the halls of Congress. You support new election laws that take away voting rights from millions of Americans or at least make exercising their right much more difficult. You’re supporting new laws that give legislatures the right to decide who wins elections in their state, ignoring the vote tallies from local electoral boards. And today, you’re supporting destroying more rights for women. You’re advocating taking freedom away from citizens of the United States based on your religious mumbo-jumbo.

Trying to install the losing candidate as a fascist dictator isn’t done by people who love America. It’s done by goons who hate democracy. it’s unAmerican.

So on Monday, Magats, grill your hotdogs, drink your Skunky Lite, blow up fireworks, and scream “murica” despite the fact you’re a hypocritical traitor to this nation. I don’t want to see you two-face bastards displaying how much you love the country you’re trying to destroy.

A lot of people who’ve had their rights taken away are refusing to celebrate the Fourth this year. They feel this nation has betrayed them and they’re right. I think the MAGAts shouldn’t celebrate the Fourth. They should celebrate January 6, not because it’s Independence Day for MAGAts, but because it’s Treason Day.

I love the United States but it’s complicated. Despite all its flaws and times throughout history where she let me down as she’s doing today, I will still fight to save her from Donald Trump, Republicans, and MAGAts.

MAGA is unAmerican.

Creative note: I used Google images of steeples as my reference today but I don’t know why I didn’t just look out my window and use the two across the street.

Music note: I listened to The Cars while drawing today.

Borschting For Freedom

The Freedom Truckers hauling bullshit and snowflakes have picked a really bad time to pretend their freedom is under attack. It’s kinda like protesting the War on Christmas in July. There are not a lot of takers.

First, all the mandates they’re protesting against are being lifted. Second, it’s really hard to gain pity for being forced to wear a face mask in a Dunkin’ Donuts when there are Ukrainian grandmas facing down Soviet tanks.

These truckers, organized by white nationalists, want to whine and complain but they don’t have anything to complain about. In the 1953 classic, “The Wild One,” outlaw biker Johnny Strabler, played by Marlon Brando, is asked by Mildred, just some girl in the movie I think, what he’s rebelling against. Johnny’s reply is, “What’ve you got?” If Mildred had replied something about having to wear a face mask at Denny’s, Johnny might’ve just rolled out of town. Maybe he would helped Kevin Bacon rebel against John Lithgow’s anti-dancing laws in whatever town that was. Would all those kids have lost their collective shit if they were told they could dance but had to be vaccinated first?

The truckers are trying to mimic the Canadian trucker protest but without the violence, obstruction of traffic, bombs, looting, and maybe they’ll keep the racism in their cabs, but we’ll see how long that lasts. They claim they’re not going to enter Washington, D.C, and instead will just circle the city on the Washington Beltway in Maryland and Virginia.

If these truckers obstruct traffic in northern Virginia, nobody’s gonna notice. Traffic stops here on Sundays without any reason. Personally, I’d rather wear a KN95 face mask all the way from D.C. to Las Vegas and back again than have to drive to BWI at, well…anytime. If traffic is obstructed during the protests this weekend, we won’t know if it’s actually from the protest. It’ll just look like a Thursday, or a Sunday, or a Monday, or etc, etc.

And how much do you want to bet that after driving across the nation and circling around the capital that these morons are going to gripe about gas prices?

Mask and vaccine mandates are being eased across the nation. Soon, you’ll be able to walk into a bar in New York City and pay $15 for a domestic lite beer without having to wear a face mask. But even when you were required to wear a face mask or be vaccinated to enter an establishment, your freedom wasn’t being attacked. You had the freedom not to go to those establishments. The requirement to be vaccinated to cross international borders is another thing that’s not an attack on freedom.

If you want a real example of freedom under assault, don’t look at truckers in Canada and the United States. Look at Ukraine, which is being invaded by Russia, ordered by a fascist dictator who plans to destroy Ukraine’s democracy and install a puppet government.

During the Canadian trucker blockade, Donald Trump said, “A line has been crossed. You’re either with the peaceful truckers or you’re with the left-wing fascists.” Right before the invasion of Ukraine, Trump stood with Vladimir Putin’s fascism by calling him a “genius.” You’re either with Ukraine or fascist Putin. We know who Trump and Tucker Carlson are with.

One trucker wrote on one of the Freedom Trucker channels on Telegram, “What we see in Ukraine is not bravery, it’s adrenaline and rush. Real bravery comes from a good dose of wisdom. The people fighting in wars are not brave but pumped with adrenaline and lacking wisdom. This is bravery. Support the truckers.”

While attending the CPAC conference, Lauren Boebert said, “I pray for Ukraine, and I wish them the best. They have a great president right now who has really said clearly, ‘Live free or die.’ He said, ‘I don’t need a ride, give me ammunition. The fight is right here.'” Then she said, “But we also have neighbors to the north who need freedom and need to be liberated, and we need that right here at home as well.” Shortly after that, she rushed back to Congress to vote against medical treatment for veterans.

The people who support the freedom trucker thing have more in common with fascist Putin than with democratically-elected Volodymyr Zelensky. Until now, these people supported Putin. These people supported an attempt to overthrow our own government. And now they’re going to drive around in circles, honking their horns, and claiming their freedom is under attack?

Dear Freedom Truckers. You tried to destroy our freedom. For all I care, you can take your big rig and drive it up your ass.

The trucker movement is fizzling out and it’s not going to be as large as they envisioned. It’s really hard to get people to mobilize behind bullshit. Republicans are usually pretty good at protesting and being angry at stuff that doesn’t exist, like kids being taught Critical Race Theory or the War on Christmas or that the election was stolen or that your homophobia is being attacked by a unisex Potato head, but sometimes, it just doesn’t catch on. This Trucker Freedom movement is going to have a shorter lifespan than Gangnam style.

So, protester tip: If you’re going to protest, make sure you have something that actually exists to protest because you’re not Marlon Brando.

Music Note: I was tooning to whatever Apple Music randomly played today until it hit a J. Geils Band song. After that, I had to listen to more J. Geils Band.
