Fabricio Alvarado

Some Costa Rican Tongue

crsta03162018

I drew this cartoon for The Costa Rica Star and it ran Friday, March 16.

The president signed a new anti-nepotism law and I speculated  it could impact the next administration, if that presidency is occupied by religious wingnut Fabricio Alvarado and his speaking-in-tongues wife.

I draw four cartoon a month for the Star. Since there’s five weeks in March and the election is in early April, I took this week off so I can draw next week closer to election day.

Here’s the video.

Cementazo Chopper

crsta03092018

I drew this cartoon last week for The Costa Rica Star.

Costa Rica presidential candidate Fabricio Alvarado has been flying to events in a helicopter that’s connected to Juan Carlo Bolanos. Bolanos is currently embroiled in the Cementazo scandal and is currently in preventive imprisonment (whatever that means) for embezzlement, influence peddling, criminal simulation and false accusation.

There’s a new cartoon for this week at The Star. Go check it out.

Here’s the video.

Costa Rican Gayday

crsta03022018

I drew this cartoon last week for The Costa Rica Star.

Costa Rica’s uber-evangelical candidate Fabricio Alvarado’s team has stated being gay doesn’t mean a maybe-future Fabricio administration won’t hire you. It just means that you probably won’t be able to work for them and if you do, you have to stay in the closet.

If you do become a member of the Alvarado administration, you can’t engage in homosexual behavior, like being in a gay pride parade, which is an example they cited. You also probably will not be tolerated if you give off a perceived gay vibe.

Fabricio is in a statistical dead heat with Carlos Alvarado (no relation). Fabricio has pulled out of five planned debates, most likely because Carlos will eat him alive. Fabricio doesn’t really have any position except being anti-gay. Seriously. His entire platform is, no gays, no gays, no gays. He is so afraid of gays that he’s probably gayer than Mike Pence.

Fabricio is the candidate for the National Restoration Party, which is very religious. Fabricio himself is a preacher and a Christian singer. It’ll be like electing an ignorant game-show host to your nation’s highest office. I wish there was an example where that’s already in place, so I can point out how it doesn’t work.

Carlos is from the Citizen Action Party, which is caught up in the Cementazo scandal (which Fabricio isn’t entirely clean of himself) and hasn’t done anything with its leadership role to pull the nation out of debt, repair the economy, or restore its credit rating. While Carlos’ party is responsible for most of the nation’s ills, Fabricio doesn’t even know what they are.

In the early 1990s, the race for Louisiana’s governor was between former Democratic governor Edwin Edwards, who had a history of corruption, and former grand wizard David Duke. There were bumper stickers in the state which read, “Vote for the crook. It’s important.”

Carlos Alvarado hasn’t been shown to be a crook at all. His greatest crime so far is that he’s associated with a party that’s failed to lead the nation out of debt and restore its economy.

But, the voting citizens of Costa Rica need to vote for Carlos Alvarado. It’s important.

Here’s the video.

Expat Democrats

crsta02162018

This cartoon ran last week in The Costa Rica Star.

I get annoyed at people who claim they’ll leave the country if they don’t get their way. You hear a lot of celebrities make that promise. But, after they don’t get their way they don’t ever do us the favor of keeping their promise and leaving. They stay and continue to vent.

One of their favorite destinations to not go to is Costa Rica. Rush Limbaugh swore he’d move to Costa Rica if Obamacare passed. He’s still here. If Rush had moved to Costa Rica he would have discovered a nation that already has a national health plan. Oops.

Liberals and Democrats aren’t any better. How many swore they’d move to Canada, France, the UK, or Costa Rica if Trump won. None of them left.

A lot of lefties believe Costa Rica is a liberal utopia in Central America. It’s a nation that takes climate change very seriously. However, it’s a very religious nation where abortion and same-sex marriage are illegal….for now.

An international court recently ruled that Costa Rica needs to allow same-sex marriage. Costa Ricans have responded to this by putting a candidate into their presidential runoff who is campaigning on the nation leaving the international court system and vowing to never recognize same-sex marriage.

So, liberals, if you want to be an expat in Costa Rica, keep in mind there’s a very strong religious conservative tilt in the nation despite the legal prostitution. That’s weird, right?

The Costa Rica Star discovered I am making videos of my cartoons. They’ve asked me to do the same for them. There is not a video for this cartoon, but there is one for the next. You can go to the Star’s YouTube channel and check it out.

I want to thank everyone who has donated in the past. Your support helps me continue creating cartoons and columns with a little less stress in my life. Between competing syndicates with much larger resources, timid editors, and Trump supporters who attempt to intimidate the editors who do publish anything that criticizes their idol, it’s a challenge to make a career out of this. So your support (if you can) is appreciated. Alvaradomania

crsta02092018

If you’re a betting person, you’ll put your money on Alvarado winning the presidency in Costa Rica.

The run-off pits Fabricio Alvarado against Carlos Alvarado. Fabricio is the religious zealot from the National Restoration Party, that only holds one seat in the National Assembly, which is held by Fabricio. Carlos is from the center/left Citizen Action Party, which currently holds the presidency of a government that’s in a financial crisis.

Do you vote the guy from the party that hurt the nation’s economy, or do you vote the guy who only cares about fighting against same-sex marriage? Decisions, decisions. It would be a pretty simple choice for me.

You vote for Carlos, the guy who at least has a clue on how government and the economy works against. You don’t want to put a religious bigot in charge of your nation. Costa Ricans only have to look north to see how that works out.

This cartoon ran last Friday for The Costa Rica Star. There’s a new cartoon up for this week, which I’ll post here next week.

Some Costa Rica Tongue

crsta02022018

Here’s last week’s cartoon for The Costa Rica Star.

A video emerged of presidential candidate, Fabricio Alvarado, wife speaking in tongue. It’s good stuff. I’m not far enough along in my Spanish lessons to hold a conversation yet, but I can tell from the tape when she’s not speaking Spanish…or any discernible language.

Fabricio made the run-off last Sunday and there’s a very good chance the religious zealot will be Costa Rica’s next president.

There’s a new cartoon up this week (which I’ll post here next week). Go to the Star’s page and check it out.

Election Day In Costa Rica

crsta01262018

Costa Rica is going to the polls today to elect a brand-new president. This cartoon was published last week for The Costa Rica Star (and there’s a new one for this week which I’ll post here next week. Confusing? Yeah).

Fabricio Alvarado, an evangelical preacher and singer of Christian music whose wife speaks in tongues (go see this week’s cartoon), was languishing in the polls until the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled that Costa Rica should allow same-sex marriage. Now, Alvarado is leading in the polls of the heavily religious nation.

While the nation is very progressive on environmental issues, voters vote their religion. In addition to same-sex marriage, abortion is illegal in Costa Rica. The nation is heavily in debt and its credit rating is plummeting, but most voters are focused on social issues. Alvarado has barely campaigned on the fiscal issues.

It’s doubtful he’ll get enough of the vote to win the presidency outright. So, there’ll be a runoff in April. Look forward to more cartoons on Costa Rica’s elections until then. I’m sure if Alvarado wins, I’ll have a lot of fun with “President Fabricio.”
