These are the roughs from last week.

This one was drawn a few days before last Friday (June 23), my CNN day. I was considering this for my newspaper clients but then thought of something I liked better and went with that.

I didn’t do this one for CNN either. And when I finished the final version of it last Thursday, I sat on it over the weekend. I put it on the shelf for this cartoon. One editor said it was “brilliant but too cruel.”

This is the cartoon I started last Thursday night so I could get a day ahead and focus on CNN all day Friday, but I pulled this one. I liked it but I was afraid most people wouldn’t remember “stop trying to make fetch happen” from the movie Mean Girls. Everyone loves calling Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene “mean girls,” but have those people seen the movie? I did see the movie but it was years ago and to be honest, I didn’t remember the quote either. I found it by looking up quotes from the film to see if that’d give me an idea. It did…but not one that worked. I bounced this off two other people, both females, and they didn’t recall the quote either. Anyway, I did this cartoon on the mean girls instead.
I think if the majority of readers understood the “fetch” reference, this would have been a great cartoon.

I did draw this last Friday and submitted it to CNN, but I had no expectations of them selecting it, and I was OK with that. I started to draw this last Sunday and then changed direction. I decided that there were cartoons making this comparison, so I did this cartoon instead, which I thought was a point nobody else was making.

My editor told me he wanted to see some ideas on Alito, and I loved that direction. This was my first shot. I like it but maybe only because I wanted to draw the bears and salmon. OK, I have a thing for drawing animals, that’s what Pizza Rat says anyway.

But then I thought of this and was, “Yeah!!! I’m onto something here.” But I knew I could do it better. I also couldn’t come up with song lyrics that fit the situation but it did give me a “Take me to the River” earworm.

And then I adjusted and turned it into this and it even made me laugh out loud. I literally LOL’ed. I was really hoping my editor would select it and when he did, I was a happy boy. I love doing funny cartoons. Here’s the final version.

I roughed this out after sketching the last singing fish and before CNN told me that’s what they wanted. I think this would be a fine cartoon for cartoonists who are not as good as me. HAHA!

I like ’em all, but I’m still partial to the one with the right-wing justices in the mini-sub! So much to work with these days!
