I think minor league baseball is great for communities. They add to a regional identification, great for families and usually cheaper than a night out at the movies. I just don’t know if the investment of a new stadium is worth it. The price tag is pretty hefty. From the public’s reaction at a public hearing it seems a lot of people agree with me.
I had doubts the team would actually come here. I had doubts because a lot of team owners will use a city wanting a team as a bargaining cheap to extort more amenities from their current city. It also seemed like every lofty goal over the past few years (slavery museum, waterpark) just did not happen.
On another note, Richmond is now trying to build a slavery museum. The state is even putting money toward it. I think that’s great as long as they don’t send any state money to Douglas Wilder.
Back to the stadium thing, I still have some doubts. But if the team actually comes I’ll go and maybe even buy a cap.
Here’s the rough.
