Pope Francis

Pope Slap

While greeting the faithful around the Nativity at the Vatican on New Year’s Eve, one overly-enthusiastic worshipper grabbed Pope Francis and wouldn’t let go. To break free, the Pope slapped the woman’s hand twice and stormed away afterward visibly upset. Anyone who’s ever attended Catholic school recognized the short slaps delivered with quick precision. They also recognized the expression on the Pope’s face. It’s one Catholic students never wanted to see in a nun.

He was trying to greet children and the woman grabbed him with both hands while he was walking away, yanked him back, and made the 83-year-old Pope lose his balance. He was caught by surprise so maybe his reaction is understandable. But Francis is the Pope so naturally, he later apologized.

In his traditional Wednesday remarks, the Pope said, “Many times we lose our patience. I do, too, and I’m sorry for yesterday’s bad example.” The people who really rejoiced, while pretending to be upset, at the Pope’s initial reaction were conservatives, who aren’t big fans of his (while ignoring that Donald Trump grabs “pussy”).

Republicans believe they own religion or at least the right religions. Evangelical support for Donald Trump is off the charts which boggles the mind of anyone who clearly sees the hypocrisy and double standard. But, most of that support is white support.

A Pew Research Center survey from 2017 looks inside the numbers and finds that most religious support for Republicans is white.

While only 18% of white evangelicals identify as Democrats, 77% are Republican. It narrows with white Protestants as 53% identify as GOP with 41% going Democratic. Black Protestants support Democrats with 87%.

Support is basically tied when you factor in all American Catholics with the GOP at 46% and Dems at 47%. But, it gets wider when you factor in race. White Catholics support Republicans at 54% and Democrats with 40%. Hispanic Catholics vote Democratic at 64% and Republican at 27%.

Despite Republican pandering, Trump claiming he’s the “chosen one,” that he’s done more for Israel than any president before him, and recognizing Jerusalem as the capital, Jewish voters strongly favor Democrats over the GOP 67% to 31%. And Mormon voters…do you really have to ask? It’s in the 70% range.

If you’re not religious at all, then you’re probably going to vote Democratic (because people who aren’t religious tend to be more educated and deal with issues on a factual basis). Godless heathens, like myself, support Democrats at 68%.

Republicans continue to claim they’re the party for people who worship. The truth is, they’re the party for white worshippers. That’s as confusing as people who support the military and consider themselves patriotic supporting Donald Trump, or people who claim they want family values, or a cohesive and consistent foreign policy, or people who think.

But as we’ve seen from white evangelicals, they’re hypocrites who sell out their principles to get what they want. As I wrote recently, they’ll support Trump to force us to obey the principles and ethics they pretend to have.

What you need to do if you’re a religious person who supports Donald Trump and the Republican Party is to be like the Pope. Slap that tiny orange hand away. Don’t let the tiny orange fingers pull you in deeper into a hole you’ll never be able to crawl out of.

Bernie’s Vatican Detour

Bernie Sanders took a two day break from campaigning in New York to give a speech at the Vatican.

Sanders has momentum and he draws larger crowds than any of the other candidates. Last week he drew over 27,000 to a rally in Washington Square in New York City. You’re not going to see those crowds at a Clinton, Cruz or even a Trump rally. Going to the Vatican to meet the Pope further adds to the impression of Sanders’ momentum.

This momentum isn’t going to deliver a victory in New York. There’s debate that his two day swing away from the campaign was a waste of time and money. Reportedly he spent $2 million of his campaign’s money to take his family with him to Rome on a private plane. I don’t see an issue with that. When people donate money to a campaign, you’re allowing them to use the funds the way they believe best to win. I doubt if many of Sanders’ contributors, who give an average of $27.00, are upset over this expense.

Things are getting hot between Sanders and Clinton, but not nearly as heated as between their supporters. Many swear they won’t support the other if they become the nominee. It’s getting insane. I’ve been accused of supporting Hillary and feeling the Bern. Other times I’ve been accused of being a right winger for my cartoons on the two, which makes me believe the critic has only seen one cartoon of mine in the 25 years I’ve been doing this. It doesn’t get much more insulting than being called a right winger.

Here’s the truth. The hard truth for many. Hillary Clinton is going to be the next president. She’s going to defeat Sanders in New York and eventually win the nomination. It doesn’t matter who the GOP nominates as the Democrats are set with 240 definite electoral votes. Republicans are so determined to stop Trump that they don’t realize Cruz is just as much of a drag on their ticket and will lose House and Senate seats this November.

Sanders may not win but he’s been very influential, even pulling Hillary further to the left. That’s something Obama waited six years into his presidency to do. My hope is that the issues Sanders is bringing to the table now don’t fade away after November.

Pope Vs. Trump

Just when you think campaign 2016 can’t get any crazier, Donald Trump enters a feud with the Pope. The Pope. Pope Francis. The guy who lives in the Vatican. Yeah, that Pope.

You can create a who’s who list of everyone Donald Trump has feuded with, Fox News, Megyn Kelly, Chris Wallace, President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Rosie O’Donnell, Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch, Univision, Mark Cuban, Jon Stewart, Cher, but the Pope? Pope Francis was asked a question about Trump on his journey home from Mexico. The Pope said “A person who thinks only about building walls — wherever they may be — and not building bridges, is not Christian.”

Trump shot back, “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.” “No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith.” At least he didn’t call him a disgusting, loser or a pig. It is funny for Trump to scream about having his religion questioned when he’s done the same to others. He also said the Pope would pray for a Trump presidency if ISIS ever attacks the Vatican. I think there’s a lot of us who will pray if we have a Trump presidency…and I don’t even believe in God.

I join others who don’t want to question an individual’s religion. I think it’s very vulgar the way Republicans have questioned Obama’s religion.  I do believe Donald Trump is a Christian. So is Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, etc. What one can argue is “are they good Christians?”. Are they Christian-like?

Advocating racist policies, calling people murderers and rapists, well those are not Christian-like  behaviors.

I don’t care about a politician’s religion. I do care when they put their religion before the job they were elected to perform. I care if they don’t believe in the separation of Church and State. I care if they state, as Ted Cruz recently said, “I’m a Christian first and an American second.” That’s fine and well. Go be a Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, a total Pagan, first…just stay out of my government. I’m not interested in your Theocracy.

Kim Davis Meets The Pope

When news hit Tuesday night that homophobic Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis had a secret private meeting with the Pope, most people reacted “wha’aaaaaaaaaaat?”

There was a lot of doubt. The Pope was riding high on good will from the United States. Why would he meet with such a hater?

The Pope gave a talk about conscientious objectors in public service. The only problem is, Kim Davis is not a conscientious objector. If she was, she would have quit her clerking job.

The Pope’s meeting with her was supposed to stay quiet until after he left the country which makes sense he’d want to be out of the country when the public found out he was BFFing with America’s current number one bigot.

Way to go, Pope.

Bless This Server

While I don’t think the continued search and revelations into Hillary Clinton’s emails will amount to much, I don’t think there’s any argument that she wants the topic to go away. I also don’t think there’s any disagreement she’s not handling the issue very well.

I’m officially tired of drawing cartoons with the Pope. No offense to the Pope. I would get tired of any individual I have to draw too much…any individual who is not named Donald Trump.

Preaching To Congress

Pope Francis addressed Congress. He’s the first Pope to do so. Arizona Republican congressman Paul Gosar boycotted the Pope’s address because the Pope believes in Climate Change. He doesn’t believe the Pope should use “questionable” science as Catholic dogma. Several politicians have taken issue with the Pope’s stance on Climate Change and presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Rick Santorum say they’d rather trust a scientist. Ooh, yeah you may not wanna go there. The Pope has a degree as a chemical technician and he also worked as a chemist. Let’s not forget that 97% of scientist believe in Climate Change and the three percent that do not, well they’re on the payroll of oil companies and conservative think tanks.

What’s really optimistic is that the Pope said he believes this Congress can combat Climate Change and he addressed immigration. He even drew comparisons between this Congress and Moses. This Congress?

This is the Congress led by a Republican majority that has explicitly stated they will not work with the president and they’re only goal was to make him a one-term president. This is a Congress that ran on a jobs platform that’s yet to produce one jobs bill. This is a Congress that’s wasted time on multiple hearings on Benghazi and votes to repeal Obamacare. This is a Congress where a member brought a snowball to the floor to disprove Global Warming. This is a Congress where Ted Cruz is a member. Speaking of Ted Cruz, this is a Congress threatening to shut down the government if it doesn’t defund Planned Parenthood over a bunch of bogus videos.

The Pope is not the liberal the media will have us believe. While he believes in Climate Change, pushes immigration and is staunchly against the death penalty, he’s still anti-abortion and birth control. If anything, this Pope is teaching tolerance. I think Republicans are mostly upset because he’s not a partisan on their side. I wouldn’t label him a Democrat.

He asks the United States to pray for him. And understand many are not Catholics or even believe in God, he has asked for good thoughts.

I don’t have to believe in God to believe in this Pope. I like his message of peace, love and tolerance. I like he’s a realist toward Climate Change. I will extend him good thoughts. I especially believe we need good thoughts because we have to live with this Congress.

As we’ve come to expect from our politicians is that their true faith isn’t in democracy, their constituency, each other or even religion. They pray to lobbyists and lobbyists money.

Pope Francis is much more optimistic than political cartoonists.

Slithering Republicans

I don’t think it’s entirely fair to compare Republicans to snakes. I like snakes. In my early 20’s I worked in a couple of pet shops and even a zoo. I had pet snakes until I was hired by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1997. I couldn’t take my two Boa Constrictors to Hawaii as snakes are not allowed there. Since then I never got another one. I don’t think I’ll ever have another snake as I’m not in the zone for the maintenance. I still love snakes and I’m usually fascinated by all animals.

I don’t think Chubbs, my Beagle, will allow me to give attention to another animal (not that he thinks he’s an animal).
