Philando Castile

Blue Cop, Red Cop, White Cop, Black Cop

I honestly believe the most effective way to end discrimination among our nation’s police is to bring more minorities into their forces, especially to represent the population of their communities.

Irving, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, is a great example. 70% of the community is non-white but minorities only account for 17% of their police officers (as of 2013).

In a 2013 (which wasn’t that long ago) analysis, minorities only represented 24% of communities police forces in cities of 100,000 in comparison to the population. Have you said “wow” yet? I’ll do it for you. Wow!

I know that survey is two and a half years old, but 2013 wasn’t that long ago. I don’t believe significant improvements have been made in that time frame.

The recent killing of five policemen in Dallas is terrible of course, but why Dallas? Dallas is a city that’s actually worked very hard to improve their relationship with the black community. Of course I’m writing here from the standpoint that discrimination, and targeting of minorities by the police, is an accepted fact. A lot of people still refuse it to be true.

But whether you live in the real world or you still have your head up your ass, changes have to me made. This is a country that was built on slavery and suppression. Society can’t exist now with white people saying “hey, you can vote now. Shut up and ignore the problems.” Just because the president is partly African-American (a good thing in itself) does not mean racism has been eliminated. If anything, it’s brought it out more into the open. Go read a McCoy or Branco political cartoon (google. I’m gonna get some emails and Facebook messages for that.) It’s not that I think they’re so much racists, as much as their white privilege is threatened.

I hate the black friend defense being used in an argument. But having friends from different backgrounds is good for you. Having friends who happen to be black (I’m talking to white people here) will not hurt you. I think if your coworker happens to be a different race than you, then maybe you will eventually see the world with a broader vision.

The first step in improving the relationship between police and the communities they serve is to make the police force look more like their community. A lot of cities are working on this and making progress. But the word “progress” means it’s still moving forward. We’re not there yet.

It’s time to wake up. It’s also time to stop killing people because a different race scares you.

I started to draw this Thursday night and then Dallas happened. I thought it might be the wrong time to pick on the police the day after that attack. I still liked the idea and decided to finish it, even if none of my clients publishes the cartoon.

What’s happening in this nation against the African-American population can’t be ignored because of what happened in Dallas. Jon Stewart once made a point: you can respect law enforcement while still being disturbed by police brutality and discrimination.

Check Your Privilege

I’ve heard accusations that some Black Lives Matters protesters are cheering the killing of police in Dallas. If that’s true it’s revolting. What’s equally revolting are people silent, or uncaring when police murder a black citizen.

There’s this disgusting guy named Joe Walsh. No, not the reformed drug-addicted alcoholic who played guitar for The Eagles. This Joe Walsh is a former congressman who now has a radio show. He blames Obama for the death of the policemen.  The Eagles Joe Walsh is actually charming.

Talking about a problem is not encouraging violence. It’s not provoking or being divisive. The same people who blame Obama and BLM for this don’t see any correlation between Robert Lewis Dear who watched a bunch of videos fabricating tales of Planned Parenthood selling baby body parts, and then went and shot up one of their clinics.

There is no one to blame for encouraging the terrorists who killed policemen in Dallas Thursday night. If anyone is to blame for provoking this, it would be the racist police (not all police) across this country who use their authority to murder black men. But violence is not the answer to end violence.

I’ve heard people blame Black Lives Matters and protesters for the killing of the four Dallas police officers. It seems related since it occurred at a protest rally and in the wake of police killing two black men this week. But I am having difficulty believing a protester planned and coordinated this attack within two days. A protester didn’t do this. Have you noticed nobody has blamed ISIS, who is usually blamed immediately anytime something terrible happens? We need to wait for more information before we do like Mr. Walsh and cast blame. That guy’s an idiot. Don’t be an idiot too.

Mr. Walsh tweeted that “real” America is coming after President Obama and Black Lives Matter. I’m sure when he says “real” America what he really means is “White” Amerikkka.

I actually live in Real America. Real America is white, black, brown, yellow, gay, bi, lesbian, transgender, liberal, and conservative. A lot of people in Real America are having problems coming to terms with that.
