Lady Justice

Drop The Knife

I check in on a few pages of right-wing “friends” on social media to see which narrative they’re pushing that day. Most of the time, I don’t comment or engage as it’s pointless. But it’s good to see what the Tucker fuckers are talking about. I have discovered that if you go from one cultist’s page to another, they’re all on the same talking point and often using the same code words. It only takes a few minutes each day and it beats having to watch Fox News.

One of the narratives making the rounds is that the liberal media is outraged at an Ohio police officer for shooting a 16-year-old black girl as she was swinging a knife at another young black woman. The narrative is not true.

I watch a lot of CNN and I haven’t heard anyone from the network express outrage over this shooting. Don Lemon, who is one of the right’s favorites to hate, has not gone after the police over this one and has said it may be justified. Ooh, there goes that narrative. I’ve heard people on CNN express it was a tragedy. It was a tragedy. For Fox News and their ilk, it’s another opportunity to drive up outrage and increase ratings from their racist audience. The young woman was shot by a black cop.

I’m not saying the officer shouldn’t have shot the girl. I’m also not saying he didn’t have a choice. The national Fraternal Order of Police, which called it “an act of heroism, but one with tragic results.” Maybe they should learn when it’s best to shut up. Shooting a 16-year-old girl four times in the chest is NOT heroic.

I’m not a cop. This was not something that took nine and a half minutes. This was an event that transpired in 11 seconds. I have not been trained in law enforcement so I don’t know how I would have reacted with 11 seconds and a gun on my hip when it seems there may be a life on the line.

But, I am pretty sure about one thing: If this was two white guys fighting in front of a cop and he only had 11 seconds, I bet the knife-wielding white guy would still be alive.

The cop shot Ma’Khia Bryant four times. It took four bullets to stop a 16-year-old girl. Why couldn’t he have stopped her with one bullet? Or better yet, why couldn’t he have stopped her with a taser? He’s a trained officer of the law. Why couldn’t he have physically stopped her? Again, she was a 16-year-old girl.

Here’s what white conservatives don’t understand: Breaking the law doesn’t mean you should die. It doesn’t mean a cop gets to be your judge, jury, and executioner. The “obey the rules” argument is horse shit. It’s like blaming a rape victim for the way she dressed. And as outdated as that argument is, they’re still using it.

George Floyd broke the law but he shouldn’t have been killed. I know the right wants to villainize the guy and put him on trial, but the kind of person he was is not relevant. He was murdered. People shouldn’t be murdered for passing a fake $20 bill. There was a warrant for Daunte Wright but that doesn’t mean he should have been killed. Resisting arrest is not a call for the death sentence. How many people are on death row for resisting arrest? How many people are on death row for not following a cop’s instructions?

And Ma’Khia Bryant should still be alive. Maybe she would be a little worse for wear than she started that day, but she shouldn’t be dead. We still don’t know what the circumstances are. She may have even been the one to call the police to come to her neighborhood.

How do police in nations where they don’t carry guns respond to incidents like this?

I know this will sound crazy to the right-wing fucknuts, and others will say it’s a dangerous and radical opinion, but cops shouldn’t be shooting multiple bullets into 16-year-old girls.

Creative note: I did a virtual happy hour with about 30 other cartoonists last Friday. It’s a big Zoom meeting where everyone brings drinks except for guys like me who forgot to bring a drink. Anyway, during the meeting I made a joke about the number of lady justice cartoons last week. So naturally, I drew a lady justice cartoon today.

The Ralph Club

I wasn’t alone in feeling sick to my stomach Saturday with the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. There’s just something especially nauseating about an entitled, prep school, trust-fund baby with accusations of sexual assault being placed on the highest court in the land by another entitled, prep school, trust-fund baby with his own accusations of sexual assault.

I don’t just feel disappointed. I feel disgusted. It reminded me of the way I felt on election night, but instead of this god-awful abomination being inflicted upon us for four years, Kavanaugh could be around for 30 to 40.

Senate Republicans ignored the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh. They said they believe his accuser while also believing him. How can anyone believe both? Maine’s Republican Senator Susan Collins ignored everything about Kavanaugh, believing he’s something he isn’t and gave the final vote to confirm. When Senator Al Franken was caught in a scandal for an old photo of him pretending to grope a woman, Collins called for his resignation. Yet, she’ll send Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

They ignored that the FBI investigation was just a cover and a hamstrung investigation at that. They ignored that Kavanaugh lied time and time again during his hearings. They ignored that he’s a political partisan. They ignored that he contacted witnesses about an accusation before it was published and that he lied about when he was aware of it. They ignored that he promised retribution in the future. They ignored that he may have a drinking problem and is a visibly angry person. And, if they have anything that resembles morals, principles, or a conscience, they ignored those too.

They ignored that Kavanaugh was nominated by a president who broke the law to win the election and was supported and enabled by the Russian government to gain the presidency.

They also ignored the will of the people. The majority of Americans did not support Kavanaugh. He had the lowest ratings of any SCOTUS nominee in polling history. He was confirmed with the least number of votes ever for a Supreme Court Justice. That’s OK with Kavanaugh and Republicans. They’re just fine if more disturbing details come out about him in the future after he’s on the bench.

Now, those people who disagree with the vote aren’t just liberals, Democrats, or people who disagree. No. Now they’re being described by Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and other Republicans as an “angry left-wing mob.” Tribal politics have sunk to an even lower level than where they were before.

But, if we take the Republicans description, then the majority of America is an angry mob. The majority of Americans don’t support Trump or the Republican Party.  In fact, major decisions that will affect our nation for years are being decided by a minority of Americans. Those Americans are mostly the older, white Americans.

I posted about this on social media Saturday, so if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you’ll have to suffer reading it again.

Despite having majority Senate rule, Republicans represent 143 million Americans while Democrats represent 182 million. Compound that with Trump losing the popular vote, a minority of Americans, not the majority, are deciding who gets a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court. Basically, all the rubes stupid enough to believe in pizzagate are choosing the direction our nation’s taking for the next several decades.

That’s still not good enough for them as they had to steal a Supreme Court seat from Obama and change the rules of how many votes are required for Trump’s nominees. I’m tired of Republicans taking what isn’t theirs and inflicting their will on the majority of Americans who don’t support them. I’m tired of us letting them do it.

I hope you’re tired too. I also hope you feel sick. Maybe you’re tired and sick enough to vote in November and send as many of these old, obtuse, tone-deaf, conservative white men out of office as possible.

Be Complicit
What kind of person would want to be part of something that disparages, slanders, and disrespects Dear Leader and his sycophantic followers? Hopefully, you.
Making a contribution supports my work and keeps the cartoons, columns, and videos coming. My income is from newspapers that subscribe to my work and small contributors. George Soros hasn’t sent me a million dollar check in weeks. Making a contribution of any amount, or buying a print for $40.00, makes you part of this specific resistance, and a member of Team Claytoonz (we’re still working on the name). You are complicit, an accomplice, and in cahoots (and whatever gangster terms we can think of) with this political satire pointing out that the stupid emperor has no clothes. Contributions can be made through PayPal, checks, and wads of cash exchanged in back alleys.
Whether you can help support, can’t, or just choose not to, please continue to enjoy and keep reading my work. Thank you!!!

You can purchase a signed print of this cartoon.

DOJ Happy Place

For a bunch of people who hate “fake” investigations, they sure do like calling for them. Or in this case, demanding. In case you haven’t noticed, Trump and his defenders don’t even argue the facts anymore in defending him on charges of collusion with Russia and obstruction. Instead, they attack the Department of Justice and the FBI.

A few weeks ago while screaming at the country on Fox & Friends, Trump said at some point he was going to get involved with the Justice Department. That’s exactly what he did Sunday. Trump issued an order through a tweet, “I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes — and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!”

There was a time when we believed it was a good thing that our law enforcement was protecting us from foreign spies. The Republican Party used to be about law and order. Not anymore.

Russia engaged in a campaign to interfere in our election. Law enforcement warned the Trump campaign and asked them to report anything suspicious. Instead, at least seven members of the Trump campaign met with Russians and were very eager to receive their help in defeating Hillary Clinton. The FBI spied on the Russians in the Trump campaign, not to hurt Trump, but to protect America.

In fact, the FBI told us they were investigating Clinton but never said anything about investigating people in the Trump campaign. It’s a hard argument to say the FBI was favoring Clinton over Trump, but Republicans don’t do reality anymore.

Trump’s newest deflection is that the FBI was spying on his campaign. Next, he’s going to claim they threw a porn star at him. Now he’s ordering the Justice Department to investigate those investigating him. This should not be allowed.

A few weeks ago, Deputy Attorney General, who is overseeing the Special Counsel’s investigation into Trump’s collusion with Russia said, “the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted. We’re going to do what’s required by the rule of law, and any kind of threats that anybody makes are not going to affect the way we do our job.” Now, he has caved to the bully.

There is no reason, evidence, or signs that the FBI planted moles into the Trump campaign. Donald Trump and his goons in Congress claim they did. Trump may be president, but that doesn’t mean he understands how anything works. The man asked Bill Gates twice if HIV and HPV was the same thing. Donald Trump is stupid.

Rosenstein may be just placating Trump, but the Justice Department should not cave to a bully. The Department of Justice and those in Congress should educate Trump that he is not an authoritarian leader and there are limits to what he can do. They should not be lickspittles.

Trump will not stop with this request to investigate those investigating him. Giving a bully your lunch money never stopped the bully from demanding it again. It only encouraged him. Trump has been encouraged by Rosenstein, just as he’s been by those in Congress who deem protecting Trump at all cost as their jobs.

Trump believes the Justice Department should be his own protection agency and go after his enemies. He’s complained how Attorney General Jeff Sessions isn’t protecting him and that he needs a Roy Cohn, Trump former lawyer who was counsel for Joseph McCarthy and eventually disbarred. That is the kind of lawyer Trump wants.

This is not North Korea, Cuba, Iran, China, Russia, or the Philippines. Trump should not be allowed to be a bully or a strongman potentate. Congress and the DOJ need to educate him where the lines are drawn and what he can’t get away with.

We don’t need a Roy Cohn. We need leaders in DOJ who will not let Trump put his little grubby orange hands on Lady Justice.
