Kabul

A Righteous Failure

Cjones09212021

As I posted on social media, I’ll let other cartoonists draw General Mark Milley on a pedestal.

General Milley got between Donald Trump and his nuke button days after the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol, committed by white supremacists on behalf of Donald Trump. Donald is insane and shouldn’t be anywhere near a television remote, less enough the button to nuclear weapons. General Mark Milley should be praised for his actions. But that praise isn’t a free pass to escape without criticism when it comes to major military fuck-ups.

After the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport that killed nearly 200 people, including 13 Americans, and injuring over 150, President Joe Biden promised reprisal. Within two days, the U.S. military launched a drone strike they claimed killed several members of the the terrorist organization, ISIS-K. They were wrong.

The New York Times conducted an investigation and found that the strike didn’t kill terrorists, but instead, killed ten innocent people, including seven children. And the military followed the driver for over eight hours. When it was first reported, General Milley resisted and called the strike a “Righteous strike.” Even after this, my colleagues and other opinion journalists were still praising General Milley. Yes, compared to Donald Trump, Milley is a saint…but that is a very low bar. Being better than Donald Trump doesn’t make you a good person. It just makes you better than Trump. Killing children is not “righteous.” Milley still has not apologized for this.

Conservatives have been demanding Milley’s resignation for stopping a president (sic) who had attempted a coup from using nuclear weapons. Now, they’ll probably add this to it, but not because they demand justice, but because it supports their political agenda. I hate that this cartoon will be used to help Trump supporters who also supported an attack against our government and nation. But I call balls and strikes how I see them.

These two issues are unrelated to me. Stopping Trump from nuking China is a very good thing. Killing innocents in a hasty rush for retribution and media coverage is very bad. I thought we got rid of doing reactionary stupid shit for ratings when we defeated Trump in the election. President Biden is supposed to be better. Let’s be better.

Also, would the military had ever acknowledged they killed ten innocent people, seven of them children, if a free press hadn’t reported it? They can also do better than condolences and thoughts and prayers. These were human lives. People in other countries are just as much of human beings as U.S. citizens. We did the very same thing ISIS-K did, killed innocent people, except we get to say “oops.”

Even with a president who is not Donald Trump, I will never blindly trust the government or the military. I’m not putting anyone on any pedestals because I don’t have any pedestals to give.

Creative note: I was thinking about this subject yesterday and taking Milley off the pedestal. That’s the point of me doing this subject. I wasn’t going to draw a cartoon today, but this subject kept waking me up. And as I was lying in bed wanting to go back to sleep, I kept thinking of different ideas for this subject. So, I had to do the cartoon today. This was going to be my Monday….but now I gotta find something else.

Prediction: A dozen other cartoonists will go after Milley’s pedestal tomorrow.

Love, Hate, Terror

Cjones08312021

Ashli Babbitt was a terrorist. She invaded the Capitol on January 6 with thousands of other terrorists in an attempt to overturn a democratically-held election and install an unelected dictator. They were trying to prevent Congress from certifying the election, a process mandated by the United States Constitution. Ashli Babbitt was an Air Force veteran…and a terrorist.

Ashli Babbitt was the worst kind of terrorist because she had previously taken an oath to protect her country.

When Babbitt was shot, she was wearing a Trump flag as a cape inside the Capitol. She was with a crowd of fellow Trump terrorists smashing glass on the doors that led into the lobby of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Ashli Babbitt was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer because Ashli Babbitt was a terrorist committing a terrorist attack against the country she swore to serve and protect. She is a traitor and a terrorist.

Since January 6, the day MAGA terrorists attacked our nation, Qanon, Republicans, and Donald Trump have been portraying Ashli Babbitt as a hero and the police officer who shot her as a villain who committed murder.

Before the officer revealed himself, Trump supporters had been spreading his name across the internet, mostly on hate sites. The intention here is to provide enough information so one of them can kill him.

Maria Bartiromo, a Fox News goon, described Babbitt as a “wonderful young woman who went to a peaceful protest.” Donald Trump described her in a similar manner and said, “I will tell you they know who shot Ashley Babbitt, they’re protecting that person.” Uh, yeah. The government was and still is protecting that person because Donald Trump and his followers have been vilifying him and they have a history of terrorist attacks.

And yes, the government knew who shot her and they cleared the officer of any wrongdoing and justified his actions.

Donald Trump is attacking an officer of a government agency for killing a person trying to hurt members of Congress, while he himself is still protected by officers of a government agency.

Trump claimed the person responsible for shooting Babbitt was sent by a high-level Democratic operative. Trump said, “I’ve heard also that it was the head of security for a certain high official, a Democrat, and we’ll see because it’s going to come out. It’s going to come out.” Bartiromo implied the operative was sent by Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Maybe if there was some sort of investigation led by Congress, then we could discover more information.

Actually, we know who shot Ashli Babbitt while defending the Capitol. Though he has revealed himself, I’m not going to repeat his name and help MAGAt terrorists.

The office explained he was protecting the Capitol, members of Congress, fellow officers, and himself. Babbitt and the other terrorists had the officers cornered where they could not retreat. Babbitt and her fellow MAGAt goons were warned repeatedly to stop. Since then, the officer has been receiving death threats.

Republicans in Congress have been trying to paint the terrorist attack as a peaceful protest or just regular daily tourism. They voted against investigating the attack. Republicans voted against awarding medals to the Capitol Police who worked to save their lives.

So, when I hear Republicans bash President Biden over the deaths of Americans in Afghanistan, I’m not buying their sincerity. I don’t want to hear the people who refused to give medals to Capitol Police officers bash the president for looking at his watch during a ceremony for fallen Marines. Why, if Donald Trump could tell time, you’d never catch him looking at his watch during these kinds of ceremonies. Though there was that time Trump didn’t to go to a ceremony because it was raining and he would get his hair wet.

Republicans have spent the past eight months championing terrorists. They don’t get to pretend they hate terrorists now. Fake indignation is all the GOP has left.

If you hate the people who killed 13 Americans in Kabul last week, then you should equally hate Ashli Babbitt.

Because Ashli Babbitt was a terrorist.

Kabul’s Reapers

Cjones08292021

How bad is ISIS-K? The Taliban hates them.

We spent the past two decades fighting the Taliban. The Taliban created a safe haven for al Qaida to train and conduct their terrorism. Al Qaida attacked the United States at least three times from the comfort and safety of the Taliban’s Afghanistan. So when you hear the Taliban are upset over a terrorist attack by ISIS-K, it’s not that the Taliban hates terrorism…they just hate that brand of terrorism.

It’s like pumpkin spice coffee. Hating pumpkin spice coffee doesn’t mean I hate all coffee. ISIS-K is the pumpkin spice of terrorism just like Donald Trump is the pumpkin spice of American presidents.

The Taliban claims they are the new-and-improved Taliban. Donald Trump wanted a photo-op with them. Mike Pompeo did get a photo-op with them. Donald Trump wanted their leader released from an Afghanistan prison, and he’s now ruling over the entire nation. Donald Trump negotiated our exit from Afghanistan, not with the government of Afghanistan, but with the Taliban. Today, we’re allowing the Taliban to manage security outside the Kabul Airport. The Taliban has assured us they will not attack U.S. forces during the withdrawal.

And then yesterday, a terrorist attack hit the airport. At this time (around 9:00 AM EST, 08/27/2021), at least 110 people are dead, including 13 Americans. ISIS-K has claimed responsibility. There was a warning the day before that ISIS-K might attack the airport. So yeah, I believe it was ISIS-K. How horrible do you have to be for the Taliban to think you’re an extremist? And there isn’t a guarantee the Taliban won’t create another safe haven for al Qaida.

One thing I despise about this is the nationalism we inject when there were so many other losses. I’ve already seen at least three cartoons with crying Uncle Sams and folding American flags. There will be more. I’m not against mourning the Americans who died. I’m against only mourning the Americans who died. Most headlines are saying, “13 Americans dead…and some other people.”

The other thing I despise is the immediate pile-on by Republicans to attack Biden, and I’ve already seen cartoons doing that. Liberals and Democrats didn’t do that to George W. Bush on 9/11. Can Republicans give it a day before they politicize 110 deaths? Did Democrats attack Ronald Reagan the day terrorists killed 241 Americans in Beirut, or did they give that a day? When a Republican is president during a terrorist attack, we’re supposed to rally around the flag. When a Democrat is president during a terrorist attack, then we need to start impeachment hearings. The exception to this is Donald Trump because when terrorists committed attacks during his presidency (sic), they were his terrorists.

President Biden said to the terrorists responsible for this attack, “We will hunt you down.” He’s continuing the evacuations despite more threats. He said this is the worst day of his presidency. That is leadership. We will continue to evacuate Americans and refugees, and looking at our track record at finding and killing terrorists, we will hunt them down.

The worst thing that could come from this terrorist attack is that it makes us stay in Afghanistan longer. Quite frankly, that’s what terrorists want. It’s a lot easier to kill Americans over there than over here. We still have to leave Afghanistan…now.
