George Floyd

Chauvin

Cjones07012021

Former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years yesterday for the murder of George Floyd. Chauvin pressed his knee into the neck of George Floyd for over nine minutes while he screamed, “I can’t breathe” more than 20 times and cried for his mama.

Prosecutors wanted Chauvin to be sentenced 30 years. Chauvin’s lawyers wanted him to only receive time-served and some light probation. Maybe Chauvin could have picked up trash on the interstate for a couple of weeks and then we could have called it even. Sorry, Derek, but no.

Chauvin must have cried for his mama too because she spoke at his sentencing. She asked for leniency and said news media and prosecutors had painted a distorted picture of her son. No, Mama Chauvin. Your son painted an accurate picture of himself. The crowd who witnessed your son murder Mr. Floyd asked your son for leniency. Instead of granting leniency, or the respect George Floyd deserved, your son, the murderer, continued to murder George Floyd.

Mama Chauvin said, “The public will never know the loving and caring man he is.” That’s probably because the entire world watched your son commit murder. The public knows what a murderous man your son is.

Cops kills about 1,000 people each year, but Chauvin is one of only 11 officers who have been convicted of murder for on-duty killings since 2005. That means we not only have a bunch of murderers running free, but we have a lot of murderers wearing badges.

I don’t believe the verdict and sentencing of Derek Chauvin is the beginning of the end of police brutality in America, or the end of profiling, or the end of cops getting away with murdering unarmed black people. I think it’s a blip. It’s an anomaly. Derek Chauvin will be released from prison in about 15 years and he’ll be 60 years old. What will the environment look like at that time? Will we have made progress in 15 years? Will cops stop murdering unarmed black men? How many cops will be prosecuted and sent to prison for murdering black people by the time Chauvin’s sentence is over? Will black lives matter in 2035?

There’s irony in Derek Chauvin having his mama ask for leniency after he refused it to George Floyd who was crying for his mama.

Mamas, don’t raise your babies to be murderous cops.

All Better Now

Cjones04282021

I dedicate this cartoon to every white male political cartoonists who draw a “I can breathe” cartoon after the guilty verdicts were given in the Derek Chauvin trial last week.

First, from a creative standpoint, that was some pretty lame unoriginal shit. Sorry, dudes but you phoned it in. Ya’ basic. But mostly, you’re wrong.

One Minnesota jury delivering three guilty verdicts to a white cop for murdering an unarmed black man isn’t the end of systemic racism in this country.

Did you see the way conservative media freaked out over the verdict? They’re still repeating the tired pathetic argument that if you just follow a racist cop’s instructions, then you won’t have to die.

The day the verdict was delivered, and while some white people were drafting the “I can breathe” arguments, another cop shot another black person. The day after, another cop shot another black person. Today or tomorrow, another cop will shoot another black person. Next week, another cop will shoot another black person.

In Columbus, Ohio, a cop shot Ma’Khia Bryant, a 16-year-old. Sure, she was swinging a knife, but he shot her four times. I find it hard to believe it took four bullets to take down a teenage girl.

In Elizabeth City, Andrew Brown was shot multiple times by multiple cops. Cop bullets didn’t just land in Mr. Brown. They also landed in neighboring houses. We don’t even know how many cops shot, how many times, or if Mr. Brown was armed. We do know that at least seven cops have been placed on leave. Did seven cops shoot him?

Over the weekend, Republican senator Lindsey Graham said there is no systemic racism in America’s police forces and that this is not a racist country. I don’t want to hear there’s “no systemic racism” from the white guys trying to make it harder for black people to vote. I don’t want to hear that from the white guys trying to make it harder for black people to live.

I don’t want to hear white people say black people can finally breathe, especially those white people who still have their knees on throats.

Congress is currently working on a police reform bill, but Republicans don’t want cops to be held personally responsible for wrongful shootings. I don’t think black Americans can breathe knowing the cop banging on their door, or stopping them for driving while black, or walking while black, won’t be held personally responsible if he shoots them thinking their cell phone is a gun…or confusing her gun for a taser despite having 26 years of experience with guns and tasers.

I don’t think black people can breathe when there are over 300 bills being drafted by Republicans to make it harder for them to vote. I don’t think black people can breathe while Republicans are trying to take away their constitutional rights.

I don’t think black people can breathe while Republicans in multiple states are drafting legislation to punish them for protesting, for speaking out, and making it legal for white people to kill them for protesting. Republicans are creating laws making it legal to kill black protesters with your car if they frighten you. Republicans are making it legal for white people to murder in the same style as ISIS. Other conservatives are looking at these bills and interpreting them as saying it’s legal to kill black people if they block an intersection. Seriously. Can you breathe with that shit?

I don’t think black people can breathe while less than two percent of cops are prosecuted for shooting unarmed black people.

Racism in America, in the police, in state legislatures, governors’ mansions, and Congress isn’t over because of one conviction of a cop, no more than racism in Hollywood is over because they gave one Oscar to a Korean actress. No mountaintops have been reached here.

Stop saying we can finally breathe while black Americans are still having their rights to breathe taken away.

Guilty, Guilty, Guilty

Cjones04232021

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty yesterday on all three counts he was charged with. He will be going to jail for a very long time as he may receive a sentence of 40 years. As my colleagues Mike Luckovich and Steve Sack both drew yesterday, the jury gave a verdict that “black lives matter.”

Black lives do matter, but in this country, for too long they haven’t. In fact, the verdict, being the correct verdict, came as a surprise to everyone. It surprised black America and white people on the left as they celebrated. It surprised racists like Tucker Carlson, Greg Gutfeld, and racist cartoonists who as usual, rushed to defend racists. America doesn’t normally punish cops for killing black people. As I mentioned yesterday, less than two percent of cops are prosecuted for crimes like the one Chauvin committed.

The first people to tell you things are changing for the better are white people. Tucker Carlson even asks, “What is white supremacy?” as if his show isn’t a nightly airing of his personal Mein Kampf. Other white conservatives will acknowledge the importance of the civil rights era, but believe all the work was successful and the mission was accomplished and there is no need to do anything else or even talk about race relations. A lot of white people believe racism was eradicated in this nation. Even liberal whites, myself included, can be shocked at how racist this nation truly is.

I hate to once again refer to the Saturday Night Live skit with Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock after Trump was placed into office, where they’re attending an election night party with white friends who are shocked while the two black guys saw it coming. On election night 2016, I was one of those white people saying, “I think America might be racist.”

Fox News will tell you racism is over in America while there is no better evidence of American racism than watching Fox News.

From all conservatives outraged over the Chauvin verdict, I have yet to hear one give a good reason why the verdict was wrong. I mean, other than the shitty defense that George Floyd’s death of natural causes happened coincidentally while a cop’s knee was on his neck for nine and a half minutes. It seems the racists’ argument the verdict was wrong is based on the belief that cops should be allowed to murder unarmed black men and women.

Those people are proving America is NOT less racist now that a mostly-white jury is sending a cop to prison for murdering a black man. You can’t claim the nation isn’t racist when the number-one cable news show is Tucker Carlson, a guy who endorses the racist Great Replacement Theory and who former Grand Wizard David Duke says speaks for racist America.

Also, this was in Minnesota. When we see a mostly-white jury send a cop to prison for killing a black man in Alabama, come to talk to me.

Last night, talking heads on the evening news were asking their panels if Chauvin would have been found guilty without the evidence. The evidence being the murder caught on camera. I think it’s a stupid question because he couldn’t have been found guilty of murder if there wasn’t a trial.

If 17-year-old Darnella Frazier had not filmed the entire 9 1/2 minutes of Derek Chauvin murdering George Floyd, there never would have been a trial. Shortly after the incident, the Minneapolis Police Department issued a statement saying a suspect had died from medical complications while being arrested.

That was not one murderous racist cop issuing that statement. That was the entire police department. Cop after cop testified that what Chauvin did went against police regulation, but these were the same fuckers who initially tried to cover up the murder.

During the protests after the murder, a black journalist for CNN, Omar Jimenez, his producer, and cameraman were arrested by the Minneapolis State Police. Later, the department issued a statement saying the journalist did not identify himself….despite it being broadcast on live television that the journalist was identifying himself. Also, there were producers and a camera crew…which they were aware of because they arrested them too. One of the cops physically carried the camera while it was still broadcasting live on CNN. That was not a bad cop who issued that lying statement. That was representative of the entire department. Additionally, they never gave a good reason why he was arrested in the first place.

When two Buffalo police officers shoved a 75-year-old man to the ground, surrounded by other cops, none of the cops helped the man who was on the ground bleeding from his head. Later, and only because it was caught on camera, the two cops were charged. Eventually, the charges were dropped.

Also in Buffalo, city police officer Cariol Horne was fired in 2008 for…wait for this…stopping another cop while applying a chokehold on a black man who was handcuffed. They didn’t just fire her. They took away her pension. The incident happened in 2006. But, the black man lived. She was fired and lost her pension but she saved a life. Last week – remember, we’re in 2021, a judge ruled in her favor and restored her pension and backpay. And then, the Buffalo Police Department apologized and said it was wrong to apply a chokehold to a suspect in handcuffs. Actually, I made up that last sentence. They didn’t apologize or admit they were wrong.

Think about this: Cariol Horne just got her pension back in 2021, but when she got in trouble with her department for preventing a cop from murdering a black man in handcuffs, George W. Bush was president. That was a long time ago.

So what has changed after yesterday’s ruling? Probably nothing but hope. It tells us we need to keep fighting because sometimes, we can win. Someday, we will win a case in Alabama. Someday, we’ll win over America.

But for now, cops are still cops. America is still racist America. Black parents still need to have “the talk” with their black children. A black man in the military still better find a well-lit place to pull over for cops to pepper spray him in the face.

And if it wasn’t for Darnella Frazier, Derek Chauvin and his knee would still be policing the streets of Minneapolis. The three cops who stood by and refused to stop Chauvin from murdering George Floyd would also still be on the streets. Thank you, Darnella Frazier. No 17-year-old should ever have to witness a murder, but she came through and probably prevented future murders. Darnella Frazier probably saved lives…just like Cariol Horne did.

But for now, America is still racist. Keep your cell phones on ya’.

Creative note: You may recall that the rough for this cartoon was posted a couple weeks ago on this site. It was one I was weighing whether or not to post as I really liked it and thought I might still want to draw it. Then I decided I wasn’t going to draw it. I was wrong. After the verdict came in yesterday and I thought how there probably never would have been a trial if the incident wasn’t caught on camera, I decided to do it. Also, most of the cartoons I saw on this were all about celebrating justice, which is a great angle to come from. But I thought maybe we could use one from a different perspective. So here you go.

Cop Oopsies

Cjones04152021

In 2015 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a white cop killed a 44-year-old unarmed black man by shooting him with his gun. The cop thought he was using his taser. The cop was 73 years old so he probably had some experience but you would think a rank amateur would be able to tell the difference between a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum weighing about three pounds fully loaded and a Model X26 taser weighing about eight ounces. Here’s another fun fact: While the cop was shooting Harris, another cop was kneeling on his head.

You would think professional police wouldn’t confuse guns with tasers. Whether it’s a 357 magnum, or a nine millimeter Glock, which is plastic, guns are still heavier than tasers. If you force cops to take the Coke and Pepsi challenge blind folded with guns and tasers, they’ll pick Coke every time.

On Sunday, a cop with 26 years of experience shot a 20-year-old unarmed black man during a routine traffic stop. She even yelled, “Taser” as she shot the young man. Daunte Wright was killed in Minnesota, which is already struggling from the police killing of George Floyd. The trial is currently in its third week.

The police are calling the cause of Daunte Wright’s death an “accidental discharge.” Did the cop intend to pull the trigger? That’s not an accident. She has probably picked up a gun every day of her life for the last 26 years, and she wouldn’t tell the difference between one and a taser?

Guns are typically carried on the dominant hand side of a cop’s waist. Their tasers are carried on the other side. If the cop is right-handed, the gun is on his right side. Some cops carry their tasers on their chest. Also, GUNS DON’T LOOK LIKE TASERS!!!!

Tasers usually have bright yellow on them. Guns are usually all black. In the video clip released from the shooting cop’s body cam, you immediately notice, even if you’re not a cop with 26 years of experience and never held a nine millimeter pistol in your life, that the cop is holding a gun, not a taser.

Here in Virginia, cops pulled over a black man because they couldn’t see he had temporary tags. The driver of the vehicle, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, found a well-lit place to pull over and wouldn’t exit his vehicle until the police would tell him why he was pulled over. They refused to tell him that. They had their guns drawn and were screaming at him to exit. Finally, one of the cops pepper-sprayed the vet. They later said he was slapping at their arms and hands when they were trying to open his door. Video footage fails to prove that. What it does prove is that cops are racist assholes.

You would think as the cops got out of their car, they would have seen the temporary tag in the rear window (if they hadn’t already seen it), and then apologized to the driver and let him go. They could have said, “Sir, we pulled you over because we couldn’t see your temporary tag, which we do see now. Please, accept our apology and have a good night. Sorry for the inconvenience.” Nope. Instead, they charged his vehicle with guns drawn while screaming at him.

Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario had both his hands outside his window the entire time of the incident. He told the cops he was “honestly afraid” to get out of the car with one replying, “Yeah, you should be.” The cop told him, “What’s going on is you’re fixing to ride the lightning, son.” Not that it should matter, but Nazario was wearing his uniform at the time. Fortunately, after being pepper-sprayed, Nazario did not “ride the lightening” or even have to “feel the thunder.”

After the pepper spraying, the officer, Joe Gutierrez, told Lieutenant Nazario that the police chief had given him the discretion to let him go so long as the lieutenant did not “fight and argue.” He also said he would write a summons if Lieutenant Nazario did not “chill” about the traffic stop, and that the Army would be alerted if a summons were written.

What that mean is Gutierrez knew he messed up and was trying to intimidate Nazario into not complaining about it. He literally threatened to write a summons if the guy did not “chill.” He warned that the Army would know if he received a summons, as though it would hurt his career. Oddly enough, Narazio was the only one who wasn’t screaming and cursing during the incident. Also, it was really nice the police chief had given the officer the “discretion” to let Lt. Nazario go after he didn’t do anything illegal.

Officer Gutierrez told Nazario that whether he arrested him, wrote a summons, or let him go, it wouldn’t “change his life.” Guitierrez has now been fired. I do believe his life has been changed.

But firing this cop isn’t cleaning the system by getting rid of one “bad apple.” It’s a racist and corrupt system. It gives credibility to the Defund The Police movement. If nothing else, we seriously need police reform. It’s not just a few racist cops here and there. It’s a racist system that’s nationwide.

A few years ago, my best friend and I were out playing pool on a week night. My friend had one beer and went home. A cop pulled him over. The cop tested him for drunk driving and my friend passed with flying colors. But the cop would not let him drive himself home, which was about a mile from where he was pulled over. My friend, who is also an Army veteran, is black. He called me to come out and drive him home. Of course, I needed to find another friend to go with me so we could take my car and not leave his vehicle on the side of the road. This meant I had to find another white friend who was up at midnight.

When you make a mistake, you might go to jail. When cops make a mistake, they might kill you….especially if you’re black. Anyone who refuses to see there is a serious race discrepancy problem with the police in this nation is racist. How can a cop confuse a black gun with a yellow taser when we know cops are not color blind?

Seriously, police need to chill.

Multitasking

Cjones04062021

After Donald Trump sent right-wing racist terrorists to attack the United States Capitol, killing one police officer, with two committing suicide days after, and over 100 injured from the Capitol Police force, with one losing an eye and another losing several fingers, conservatives were baffled that liberals were upset over an attack on police. I mean, aren’t liberals against cops?

No. Liberals are not against cops and we are not against having police. Sure, there’s a fringe element that wants to do away with all police and the slogan “defund the police” is a major distraction, but most liberals want police. The thing is, we want honest cops. We want a system that treats everyone equally. We want a system that doesn’t single out unarmed black Americans for punishment and unfair treatment. We don’t want cops killing unarmed black people over stuff like selling loose cigarettes, passing a counterfeit $20, or driving while black. We don’t want cops busting into the wrong house and killing the black occupants. We don’t want cops killing a man because they thought his cell phone was a gun. We don’t want cops killing a child for playing with a toy gun. It’s insane to think that people who don’t support racist cops are against cops.

Think of it like pizza. Just because I don’t want pineapple on my pizza doesn’t mean I’m against all pizza. Yes, I just equated pineapple pizza to racist cops. They both fuck up good things.

What’s insane is one day supporting racist cops and the next day, supporting the white nationalist MAGA terrorists who kills cops. But unlike conservatives, I am not baffled by this hypocrisy because I know it’s not really cops conservatives love. They love the racism. They love the Trump cult.

If Donald Trump sent Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and other assorted racist MAGA terrorist goons to kill Jesus on Easter, Trump supporters would defend that. In the racist MAGA goons defense, he was a zombie.

Republicans are clinging to a racist system that’s denying black Americans the right to vote and supporting two separate justice systems, one for blacks and the other for whites.

You can be upset over the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice while also being upset over the killings of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick and Officer Billy Evans.

Officer Sicknick was killed by Trump terrorists during their insurrection at the Capitol. Officer Evans was killed Friday by a man driving his car into Capitol Police at the Capitol, and then sprang from his car wielding a knife.

Trump supporters are simple-minded beasts. For them, everything is as simplistic as black and white (no pun intended). Fox News and Donald Trump only have to point toward the direction for the cult to go, and they go with no questions being asked.

We on the left understand life and humans are a bit more complex. You can hate pineapple on pizza while not hating pineapple. You can hate a racist like Papa John selling his racist pineapple pizza while not hating pizza. Life is complex.

Don’t be afraid to speak out for and against cops. Don’t be afraid to speak up against a racist system in our nation’s police forces. If you’re not a Trump supporter, you can multitask.

Creative note: I have a friend named Brian Evans, so I had to be very careful that I didn’t let my mind get sloppy and label one of the stones with his name. Also, big shout-out to my copy editor Hilary today who Googled and proofed each of these names while standing in line to get vaccinated at Gillette Stadium. My proof ladies really do rock.

On another creative note, I originally had “multitask” lettered in one line, but it really looked weird to me because “tit” is in the word. Look at it. “Multitask.” Maybe it was just my eyes, but it was glaring out to me. So, I moved it into two lines as an excuse to hyphenate it. Now that’s an obscure creative note. If I was going to sneak “tit” into a cartoon, I’d do it with something like “titmouse.” I’m like Homer Simpson and I can’t hear that word without giggling.

Trained To Do

Cjones04012021

For nearly a year, conservatives have been telling us what a thug and horrible person George Floyd was. They’ve been working hard to paint him as a dangerous element to society in order not just to defend the cop who killed him, but also the culture that killed him. Racist conservatives have been telling us George Floyd deserved to die.

Conservatives forget that the charge was for trying to buy cigarettes with a counterfeit bill. They ignore whether or not he resisted. For conservatives, the charge is that George Floyd was black. For conservatives, that’s a crime deserving of a death sentence without a trial.

Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin pushed his knee into George Floyd’s neck. The only things on both sides of his neck for over nine minutes was a cop’s knee and the concrete of a Minneapolis street. Why was there so much police brutality in this case? Because a black man supposedly tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill. I say “supposedly” because George Floyd has never been found guilty. George Floyd didn’t live to have a trial. Despite efforts by Republicans and assorted racists, George Floyd is NOT on trial here.

It doesn’t matter if George Floyd tried to cash a fake twenty. It doesn’t matter if he tried to cash a boatload of fake twenties. It wouldn’t have mattered if it was a $50 or a $100. It doesn’t matter what Floyd did in the past or whether he was a bad guy or an angel. None of these is a factor in the trial of white cop Derek Chauvin. Was Floyd a threat to the police or anyone else? No. Was he subdued? Yes. So, why is he dead?

Chauvin’s defense attorney, Eric Nelson, told the jury yesterday to ignore the video of Chauvin’s knee on Floyd’s neck. He’s telling them to ignore a nine-minute-plus video. He’s telling them to ignore what they’re seeing. He’s arguing that George Floyd died from drugs in his system and it’s just a coincidence he died while a white cop’s knee was on his neck for over nine minutes. That’s about as believable it’s a coincidence a Capitol Police officer died shortly after being sprayed in the face with bear spray by MAGA terrorists.

An autopsy found traces of fentanyl and methamphetamine in George Floyd’s system, but that he died from asphyxia…while saying “I can’t breathe” and crying out for his mother while a cop’s knee was on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. What’s one way to die from asphyxia? Having a cop’s knee on a neck for over nine minutes.

Nelson also said the crowd was partly to blame because they distracted Officer Chauvin’s attention away from his knee that was on George Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes. Perhaps day two of the trial will reveal there was a squirrel.

The most damning defense strategy from Nelson was when he said, “Derek Chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career.” That is not a defense.

Cops are not supposed to murder, even if they’re trained to do so. Cops are supposed to protect and serve and do it equally. There should be one justice system in this country, not two. This reveals it’s not just Chauvin on trial…it’s all of police culture. If we’re training cops to murder then the entire system that treats Americans unequally needs to be on trial. That entire system needs to be prosecuted and sent away.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. His lawyer is arguing he was trained to murder. He’s arguing all cops are trained to murder.

We don’t need to just remove “bad apples” like Derek Chauvin from our nation’s police forces. We need to remove the system that trained Chauvin and other cops to murder. Because as Chauvin’s attorney argued, killing unarmed black people is exactly what police are trained to do.

Trumping To Tulsa

cjones06152020

Donald Trump isn’t good at being subtle. Probably because he’s not very smart and he’s such hardcore racist, it’s hard to hide. When the man sends out a dog whistle, it’s not just the dogs who hear it. Everyone hears it and it’s the dogs who deny he ever sent it.

Donald Trump has decided to resume his hate rallies. Where will the hater-in-chief conduct his first post-pandemic rally? Tulsa, Oklahoma (Psst. Republicans, if you hit the ocean, you went in the wrong direction). When? It was scheduled for June 19th, or Juneteenth, the day that marks the end of slavery. Why Tulsa? Because Tulsa is the site of one of the nation’s most horrific attacks on a black community. Wink-wink. Nudge-nudge. Hoooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwlllll!!!!!

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas and read the Emancipation Proclamation announcing President Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves. Texas was the last Confederate state to receive the news. Today, Texas is still the last state that usually receives news. They still haven’t been informed of how creepy and icky Ted Cruz is. But Juneteenth is considered a major holiday by many black Americans and should be designated a federal holiday. It was a good day for this nation which is probably why Donald Trump wants to take a great big orange crap on it.

Donald Trump, the man behind calling for the execution of the Central Park 5, who turned out to be innocent (and he still hasn’t retracted his call for killing the black and Latino boys who were accused), who described countries where brown people come from as “shitholes,” who yelled for four brown women in Congress to “go back to where they came from,” who championed the racist birther movement, who called Mexicans “rapists and murderers,” and said “fine people” were marching among tiki-torch Nazis shouting “blood and soil” and “Jews will not replace us” told Fox News yesterday he’s done more for blacks than any president besides Abraham Lincoln. I think he’s confusing “for” with “to.”

He then said, “did good, although it’s always questionable.” Senator Kamala Harris said Trump holding a rally in Tulsa on Juneteenth, “Isn’t just a wink to white supremacists — he’s throwing them a welcome home party.” Saying that what Lincoln did was “questionable” is a freaking racist bullhorn. Donald Trump claimed he had not realized the meaning of the date but that people should think of the rally as a “celebration.” Fucking bullhorn, people.

He said, “The fact that I’m having a rally on that day, you can really think about that very positively as a celebration. There’s a rally, to me, is a celebration. It’s going to be really a celebration and it’s an interesting date. It wasn’t done for that reason, but it’s an interesting date. But it’s a celebration.”

Donald Trump has been racist America’s champion. He’s campaigning and talking to them. He’s their president, not yours. He’s not my president. My president doesn’t defend Confederate statues and refuses to even consider renaming U.S. military bases named after Confederate soldiers.

Now, Trump has bowed to pressure and is moving his rally from June 19 to June 20. Donald Trump’s failure to recognize the sensitivity is just another glaring example of how he’s failing America during this conversation on race after the cop murder of George Floyd.

He’s called protesters “terrorists.” He’s threatening to invade states and cities (remember when Republicans freaked out claiming Obama was going to invade and take Texas?). He’s calling himself the “law and order” president. He refuses to say systemic racism exists. He’s defending police saying, “99.9 percent of them are great, great people.” He’s created lies and conspiracy theories about antifa which have only proven false. He accused a 75-year-old man of being an “antifa agent provocateur.” He described chokeholds as “innocent” and “perfect.” He literally teargassed peaceful protesters to clear a path so he could walk to stage a photo-op with a Bible.

It’s not like Oklahoma is a swing state or that it’s the one that will push Joe Biden across the 270 electoral vote threshold. Donald Trump won Oklahoma by 36 points in 2016.

Oh, and for his Tulsa hate rally, he’s requiring everyone attending to sign a waiver promising not to sue him if they catch the coronavirus from the rally. Will there be pressure for attendees not to wear masks since Donald Trump refuses to wear one and has downplayed the virus? Why do people need to sign a waiver for something that’s a Democratic hoax?

I can’t think of a better way to stick it to the libs than attending a Trump rally without a mask and catching Covid-19. That’ll show us. I would warn you that by going to a Trump rally, you’re liable to catch something else.

But then again, if you’re going to a Trump rally to support Trump, you probably already got that virus.

Defund The Police

cjones06112020

This cartoon should ignite a lot of debate on social media over the next few days.

A lot of Black Lives Matter protesters are calling for defunding the nation’s police departments. There’s a lot of talk about what that means exactly and concerns Donald Trump and Republicans will milk it for the 2020 presidential campaign. Guess what. They’re already doing that.

It doesn’t really matter what the facts are for Donald Trump and Republicans to take something, fill it full of lies, and run with it. Remember how President Obama was going to take all our guns? Do you remember President Obama actually taking our guns? During the 2018 midterm elections, Trump and Republicans ran on the message the Democratic Party wanted to abolish ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). That did not work, the Democrats took the House, and we still have ICE. A lot of Republican voters probably thought Nancy Pelosi was coming to take their ice makers and we’d have to go back to trays.

Republicans and Trump gaslight and lie on a political issue? Remember, this is the same party that ran on saving Obamacare in 2018. Donald Trump also claimed George Soros was funding Central American caravans to “invade” our southern border and he even admitted he had no facts to base this claim.

Donald Trump stated yesterday that we’re not going to defund the police despite the fact he actually doesn’t have much of a say in it. Funding your local police department is mostly from your local government. But, the federal government can create laws restructuring and regulating police departments which is exactly what this nation needs.

While people argue most cops are good and the bads ones are just a few…the rotten apples have rotted police culture. While you can argue it was just a couple of cops who pushed the elderly man in Buffalo, there were multiple who walked past the man without offering any assistance. Then, it was an official statement from the department that the old man tripped and fell on his own despite there being video evidence contrary to that. Then, after two of the cops were punished, 52 of their colleagues resigned from their task force in protest of cops being held accountable. That is a culture that doesn’t need restructuring. It needs to be eliminated. Do we have to defund police to eliminate that rotten cop culture?

When the Minnesota State Police arrested a black CNN journalist who was only doing his job, reporting, they later issued an official statement saying they released him after verifying his credentials. The arrest was actually caught on tape with the reporter, Omar Jimenez showing the cops his…wait for it…credentials. The camera recording him and the microphone in his hand were also helpful clues, but hey, you never know when rioters will grab fake cameras and microphones to loot a Hardees. But the point is, at a moment when the public is protesting police, and the police need to rebuild trust, the entire department lied. Cops lie. They lie to cover their ass. They lie to cover each other’s asses. They lie to nail your ass.

It’s also extremely difficult to prosecute police not to mention how hard it is to get a cop to arrest a cop.  As it’s been noted and obvious to everyone except police and Republicans, the only way to get the ball rolling to prosecute a cop is to catch a cop breaking the law on tape. How many days did it take for the police to arrest and charge George Floyd’s killer? How many more days to charge his accomplices? The police record almost everything they do (they’re supposed to anyway), but we have yet to see the police’s tape from the George Floyd case.

So what does it mean to defund the police? Does it mean to cut their funding, restructure the department, or to actually eliminate the entire department?

In Minneapolis where George Floyd was killed, it means getting rid of the entire department. I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

The group MPD150, which says it is “working towards a police-free Minneapolis,” argues that defunding would be more about “strategically reallocating resources, funding, and responsibility away from police and toward community-based models of safety, support, and prevention.” So, who ya’ gonna call if someone breaks in? Ghostbusters? What if all the NRA gun nuts who took one shooting class start acting as vigilantes when they’re not marching about how much they need haircuts? You saw what happened when those two white right-wing racists in Georgia tried a citizens arrest on Ahmaud Arbery.

The main problem is the slogan, “Defund the police.” “Restructure the police department and reallocate resources to more proper agencies” just isn’t as catchy, even if liberals are more capable than Republicans with handling chants longer than three syllables.

Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Karen Bass, said she’s not in favor of eliminating police departments, but cities and states need to look at how they’re spending their resources and probably invest more in their communities. She said, “Maybe this is an opportunity to re-envision public safety.”

Right now, there is momentum to restructure the nation’s police forces. Everyone knows, even Republicans, that the nation’s police forces are corrupt. Yes, they are corrupt. When you have just one bad cop on a force and the entire department allows him to stay, you have a corrupt police force. If 19 good cops cover for one bad cop, you have 20 bad cops. In case you’re a Republican, 19 + 1 = 20.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city would move funding from the NYPD to youth initiatives and social services,  but he didn’t say how. In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti vowed to cut as much as $150 million that was part of a planned increase in the police department’s budget.

Trump is using this to help portray himself as the “law and order” candidate, despite being the same guy who calls FBI agents “human scum,” attacks law enforcement agents who investigate suspected Russian spies, ruined the lives and careers of agents for his political ambitions and petty insecurities, and has literally broken the law by asking for foreign governments to help his reelection campaign. Yes, he did all that.

Plus, the guy promising us he’s the “law and order” candidate is a huge racist. Sheriff Buford T. Justice wouldn’t want to be aligned with this guy. Yes, the nation’s police unions, who create super PACs for Republicans, are totally in bed with Donald Trump, who told police they shouldn’t be “too nice” when arresting brown suspects. Donald Trump has literally encouraged police to engage in police brutality. How did the police in attendance react? They laughed and applauded. Again, cop culture is corrupt.

The LAPD union representative said, “Cutting the LAPD budget means longer responses to 911 emergency calls, officers calling for back-up won’t get it, and rape, murder, and assault investigations won’t occur or will take forever to initiate, let alone complete.” So basically, the cops will respond slower to the neighborhoods they don’t patrol anyway and suspects will be prosecuted almost as slowly as bad cops are prosecuted.

As we know from history, the Democratic Party’s biggest obstacle to winning a presidential election is the Democratic Party. The Democrats will defeat themselves before Donald Trump will. Right now, it looks like Joe Biden, who said he’s against defunding the police, is on his way to a historic landslide in the presidential election. And, the Democratic Party only has to defeat a stupid racist who lost over 40 million jobs, over 100,000 lives, and the nation’s respect and credibility on the international stage. So, yeah…Democrats should be terrified.

I know the socialist Democrats are passionate to the point they don’t really care about winning elections. You want change and you want it now, damn the politics of it. But you need the politics to get what you want. It’s like saying, “Fuck it, I’m voting third party” then not understanding why you don’t see any liberal change after getting Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

Should we defund the police? Yes, to a point. Should we eliminate police departments? No, but we should tear them apart and rebuild. But before we can do any of that, we have to get rid of Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell. What I don’t understand is why that is so hard for the Bernie Bros to understand. It’s like a four-syllable chant to Republicans…or math. They can’t do it.

Before we can restructure the Po-Po, we have to get rid of the orange Ho-Ho.

Full Of Crap For Kap

cjones06102020

Pete Rose is banned from Major League Baseball. He’s considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time being voted Rookie of the Year, winning three batting titles, three World Series, two Gold Glove, and one Most Valuable Player Award. He went to the All-Star game 17 times where he played five different positions (no one else has ever done that). And yet, he’s still not in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Why did Major League Baseball banish Rose in 1989? He gambled on teams while he was managing and playing on the Cincinnati Reds. Even Ty Cobb is in the Hall of Fame. MLB is really pissed at Pete Rose.

What did Colin Kaepernick do to be banned from the National Football League? Did he beat someone up? Did he beat up a woman? Was he accused of rape? Did he operate a dog-fighting operation? Was he caught doping up? Did he go out and say a bunch of racist and derogatory comments? Did he expose himself to a female reporter? Was he snagged with underage prostitutes at a massage parlor? Was he accused of murder? did he cheat in the Super Bowl? Did he take out bounties on opposing players? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no. All that stuff won’t get you banned from the NFL. So what did Kaepernick do? Kap protested police brutality against black Americans and a legal system that treats Americans unevenly. Basically, Kap said, “Stop killing black men.” The NFL said, buh-bye.

The NFL is really good at lip service. They can literally put the money where their mouth is when it comes to raising charity and they’re good at putting up a dog-and-pony show. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they make their players wear pink shoes. And when Donald Trump started screaming “Fire that son-of-a-bitch” at his hate rallies over black athletes protesting during the national anthem, the NFL claimed they stood with their players, but banned them from protesting…and they banned the man who started the protests, Colin Kaepernick, from playing in the league entirely.

Kaepernick is not officially banned. It’s more of a wink-wink-nudge-nudge-don’t-you-dare-hire-that-guy ban. Last year, after being out of the league since 2016 with no NFL tryouts from any team since, the league gave him a tryout day where every team was invited without the certainty of which would attend. It blew up after the NFL threw a contract at Kaepernick that was unlike the usual contracts for tryouts. The tryout blew up. It was the NFL pretending to give Kaepernick an opportunity. Yet, not one NFL team has invited Kap to their practice facility for a tryout. I mean, it’s not like the quarterback ever took his former team, the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. Oh, wait. Yes he did. You would think that in the four years since, one NFL team would have said, “Hey, let’s look at that guy.” They won’t even let him apply for a job.

Several current players in the NFL released a video demanding the league take the protest against police brutality seriously. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell responded with his own video and said, “We, the NFL, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of Black People. We, the NFL, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the NFL, believe Black Lives Matter.” Wow, hey, yay…uh…what’s missing from that?

What’s missing is Colin Kaepernick’s name. They’re against racism and apologizing for being on the wrong side, yet they can’t admit where they were wrong. They say they believe “black lives matter” but can’t admit they’re still punishing someone for believing “black lives matter.” While they now say they “encourage” players to speak out and peacefully protest, they can’t admit they’re punishing a player for doing so.

But the thing is, there’s a difference between “not listening,” which is what Goodell is admitting to, and silencing, which is what they did. They silenced players. The banned protests on the sidelines before the games would start and stuck them in the locker room during the anthem. It’s like saying, “you can protest, but you have to do it silently and out of sight.” The NFL rule was, you can protest as long as nobody can see or hear you.

Colin Kaepernick was not protesting against being asked to help fight a pandemic. He wasn’t protesting because wearing a mask is uncomfortable. He wasn’t protesting for the right to get a haircut or go to the Cheesecake Factory. He didn’t storm a state capitol with an AR-15. He protested the killing of black men by police. Most people can’t even say “police brutality.” For doing the right thing, he was punished.

Drew Brees said he would never agree with someone protesting against “our flag” and cites his two grandfathers and their bravery in fighting for this nation. Drew failed to understand the issue and while citing his grandfather’s bravery, could never live up to the bravery of Kaepernick.

Donald Trump is another coward attacking the NFL, Kaepernick, and black players while hiding in his bunker.

Roger Goodell, every team owner, and every general manager in the NFL are cowards too. They’re afraid of the backlash from angry right-wing fans by bringing back a black man who spoke out against racism.

Speaking out against racism is the right thing to do. The National Football League is four years behind doing the right thing. But as it’s been pointed out, it’s not good enough for white people to not be racists. They need to be anti-racist.

Goodell’s statement says they won’t be racist anymore but we need the NFL to stand up and be anti-racist. The NFL isn’t doing that. It’s just more lip service. They’re still afraid. How can they stand up and help fight racism when they can’t even cite their past racism or fear of speaking against it? How can they stand up and fight racism when they can’t even say his name?

His name is Colin Kaepernick. He put his career on the line for doing the right thing. You punished him for it. You should allow him back in the league and while protesters chant, “Say his name” in regards to George Floyd, the NFL can’t even say “Colin Kaepernick.

Say his name.

Did Mexico Pay For It?

CNN06072020

Nope. Mexico did NOT pay for it.
Donald Trump ran on a racist xenophobic campaign of building a wall to keep people from south of the U.S. border from entering our country. The only wall he’s completed is one around the White House to protect him from Amerian citizens.
According to people who have done the measurements, there is over two miles of fence and concrete traffic stops surrounding the White House. Right now, there aren’t just Secret Service members protecting the White House and the president (sic). There are members of America’s military on the grounds…and Donald Trump wants more. Last Monday, he teargassed peaceful protesters so he could walk across the street for a photo-op.
Donald Trump teargassed protesters and the not-so-funny thing is, nobody knows for sure who ordered the gassing of American citizens. Kayleigh McEneny claimed the order came from Attorney General William Barr. Now, Barr says he didn’t place that order. If that’s true, then McEneny, who claimed during her first press briefing she’d never lie to us, owes us two apologies for lying to us. First, she said the crowd wasn’t teargassed despite it being caught live on national television. Second, she may have lied about Barr ordering that teargassing she claims never happened.
But then again, Donald Trump never hid in his bunker. He was only “inspecting” it.
Here’s a tip, White House. When you create a lie, make sure everyone’s on the same page and stick to it. You know, like building a wall, we’re already started building it, and Mexico is going to pay for it. You know, lies.
And by the way, when was the last time you heard anyone from the administration talk about Mexico paying for the wall? Just like that wall around the White House to protect scared little people who live in fear, we’re going to be stuck with the bill.
I wonder, does President Obama even know he had a bunker?
