Wahoo To Warren

Elizabeth Warren’s PR stunt of releasing the results of a DNA test proving she has “some” Native American in her ancestry isn’t going to help anyone. It’s not going to help Democrats in the midterm elections. It’s not going to help Warren in her 2020 presidential bid or her re-election to the Senate (though it probably won’t hurt much in Massachusetts). It won’t hurt Donald Trump because nothing ever does. Most of all, it doesn’t help actual Native Americans.

Does Warren actually have Native American in her ancestry? Yeah, sure. Does she have Native American heritage? Hell no. If you’re a white guy who grew up on 5th Avenue who suddenly discovers there’s a slight trace of African in your family history, that doesn’t make you one of the boys in the hood. There is no heritage there any more than my DNA results showing three percent from the Iberian Peninsula makes me Antonio Banderas.

There is stupid and ridiculous on both sides of this issue. Warren listed herself as Native American 30 years ago. Though there is no evidence that it helped her career as a Harvard professor, Republicans have made the accusation anyway.

Warren released a test that indicated she is anywhere between 1/64th and 1/1,024th Native American, which was followed by a campaign video of her visiting her family in Oklahoma to show she has red state roots. Designed to quell criticism over her Native American claim, this maneuver has exposed her for more criticism. If nothing else, it won’t shut up Donald Trump who called a porn star he slept with “horse face” yesterday.

Warren’s claims of being Native American is the type of thing where you say “shut up already” and “let it go.” Trump’s taunts of it should receive heavier criticism and condemnation. Just like his birther campaign against Obama, Trump’s attacks on Warren are racist, and we get to add sexist on top of it. For over two years, he’s referred to her as “Pocahontas,” ignoring Native Americans who have told him that’s racist and offensive. But, this is Donald Trump. I redirect you back to the “horse face” comment.

Trump has called her DNA test “bogus,” as though he’s a scientist who administered it himself. In fact, he apparently does want to test her himself.

Trump made a promise to donate $1 million to the charity of Warren’s choice if she could prove she has Native American ancestry. Now that she does, he claims he never said it, proving his memory is another thing that’s “tiny.” To be fair, he did say he’d pay it if she took the test at a debate, and he administered it himself. That would be a really long debate as most tests take at least four weeks to produce the results. Trump doesn’t like standing in elevators. Even holding an umbrella over Melania in the rain is exhausting.

But, it wouldn’t matter if the test results proved Warren was actually a direct descendant of the real Pocahontas. Trump would keep attacking her. He would keep lying. He’d continue to be a racist, sexist asshole. It also doesn’t deliver heritage to Warren.

Cherokee Nation, which is based in Oklahoma, released a statement criticizing Warren, stating she was “undermining tribal interests” by claiming to be Native American. I agree. I think at this point, she and Trump have both made Native Americans political props.

Trump said he would pay the $1 million to Warren’s charity of choice. But, he would have to administer the test himself, which he said, “That will not be something that I enjoy doing,” Which is also a statement once made by “horse face.”

Be Complicit
What kind of person would want to be part of something that disparages, slanders, and disrespects Dear Leader and his sycophantic followers? Hopefully, you.
Making a contribution supports my work and keeps the cartoons, columns, and videos coming. My income is from newspapers that subscribe to my work and small contributors. George Soros hasn’t sent me a million dollar check in weeks. Making a contribution of any amount, or buying a print for $40.00, makes you part of this specific resistance, and a member of Team Claytoonz (we’re still working on the name). You are complicit, an accomplice, and in cahoots (and whatever gangster terms we can think of) with this political satire pointing out that the stupid emperor has no clothes. Contributions can be made through PayPal, checks, and wads of cash exchanged in back alleys.
Whether you can help support, can’t, or just choose not to, please continue to enjoy and keep reading my work. Thank you!!!

You can purchase a signed print of this cartoon.

Watch me draw.

Hater Logo Club

A racist, insensitive, old image that has angered people for decades is leaving us. No, not Donald Trump.

The Cleveland Indians (that’s a baseball team, in case you didn’t know. Seriously. Someone once told me that I needed to include that Tom Brady is a quarterback when I drew a cartoon of him once), are retiring Chief Wahoo…sort of.

The Indians have been using Wahoo less and less over the past few seasons. They’re wearing a black cap with a big orange “C” for most of their games, which may anger people with calcium deficiency. They plan to retire him from their uniforms and stadium in 2019, not this season. Why wait a year? I don’t know. However, he won’t be gone for good. The team will still sell merchandise bearing his face.

If you think Trump sycophants are bad, go to talk to a sports fan. And, yeah. The Trump people are still worse, but sports fans can be pretty bad. They will argue against changing their team’s names as if it were their children.

White people always argue that something depicting another race isn’t offensive. They’ll even find a Native American who will agree with them. But, if you troll around long enough, you’ll find a black guy who will argue that slavery was great because there was zero black unemployment. In fact, I think that guy is currently the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Recently, I was talking to a friend, who is white, and he argued against changing the names of schools named after Civil War Generals. He pointed out that it never bothered him or all his white buddies while they were at school. He just couldn’t understand why a black person wouldn’t want Stonewall Jackson on their high school diploma. That’s an example of being ignorant and insensitive. That’s what these symbols are.

I think there’s misunderstanding on both sides because it’s not entirely (no pun intended because I hate puns) black and white. These mascot symbols are racist, but they’re not displayed to advance hatred and discrimination. The wearers and owners are obtuse to the feelings of others, and like Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, they can be real assholes about it.

People who wave a Confederate flag in your face are doing it to advance an agenda of hatred. Someone wearing a Chief Wahoo cap isn’t. He’s merely insensitive, which is still racism, but more of the ignorant kind than the hateful type. Kinda like when you see an Asian person and ask where they’re really from, or that time I introduced a black woman to my mom who then asked her if she lived in the hood. It’s just ignorant, insensitive, and depending upon the circumstance, can keep your son from getting any.

I have mixed feelings about changing team names and mascots. But, I’m also a white guy who isn’t being insulted by a team name. And, no. The Fighting Irish is not on the same level as the Florida State Seminoles, the Chicago Blackhawks, or the Washington Redskins. While there was a time when Irish people were persecuted in this nation, it’s nowhere near the same level that Native Americans received. I haven’t heard of any massive white protests in front of wherever they make Lucky Charms, though I’d like to see that. And on that note, the leprechaun isn’t on the same offensive level as Aunt Jemima.

I think some names and mascots are offensive while others aren’t. I don’t think anyone should have a problem with Braves or Chiefs, as that’s more of a title than Indians or Redskins. Now, that tomahawk chop the fans do at Braves games is totally racist and stupid. Again, I am a white guy so my feelings and opinion shouldn’t be persuasive on this. I also happen to like Chief Wahoo. He’s a stupid looking cartoon face and I have an affinity for that sort of thing. Have you seen my caricature of Trump? But, I do see how Wahoo is racist.

People should get over name changes. It’s sports. It does not change your life. I’m a fan of the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Cubs. When they both finally won their championships, I was really happy. I shouted and jumped up and down and celebrated. But my life didn’t change. I didn’t win the Super Bowl or World Series. I don’t own those teams. If they both changed their names, nothing would change for me. If the Redskins change their name, nothing will change for you.

I can understand the economics of changing the name. But, doesn’t that just give you more merchandise to copyright and sell?

What teams need to be careful of is changing their name to something worse. The Washington Bullets changed their name because they didn’t want to reflect violence in D.C. So, in a city where the population is majority black, they changed it to the Wizards. This is one name where I don’t think anyone will give a flying fig if they changed it to something else. Anything else.

The Washington Sycophants is already taken.

Creative note: I planned to draw this cartoon a few days ago, but…Trump fuckery. I know I’m gonna have to do something on the FISA memo, but their delay in releasing it helped me yesterday. It allowed me to draw this cartoon and get away from Trump for at least one day. Now, I know that FISA shit is going to be released tomorrow night at 6:00 pm, so I can draw a cartoon on it then. But, watch for it. Six o’clock. Friday evening. That’s when they like to blow shit up.

I want to thank everyone who has donated in the past. Your support helps me continue creating cartoons and columns with a little less stress in my life. Between competing syndicates with much larger resources, timid editors, and Trump supporters who attempt to intimidate the editors who do publish anything that criticizes their idol, it’s a challenge to make a career out of this. So your support (if you can) is appreciated. Want to help me continue to create cartoons and keep doing what I’m doing (pissing off conservatives)? Look to the right of this page and make a donation through PayPal. Every $40 donation will receive a signed print (please specify which print you want or I won’t mail one). All donations will receive my eternal gratitude

Getting Serious

I’ve always had a soft spot for Cleveland teams. It’s a hard luck city that’s gone decades without major league championships in all three of the city’s major league sports, until the Cavaliers won the NBA title this year. It doesn’t look like the Browns will find success anytime soon.

In 1995 I was rooting for the Indians to defeat the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. It didn’t happen. The Indians haven’t been back since. In a way, Cleveland is the team I root for in the American League (when I’m paying attention). Now I have to root against them. The Cubs are my team and has been since I was a child.

I wanted to do something on two teams, who haven’t won a World Series in most of our lifetimes, playing each other in the World Series. Cleveland last won the WS in 1948. The Cubs haven’t won it since 1908. The stupid Miami Marlins who started playing in the 90’s have won it twice. Stupid fish.

A lot of people are going to go nuts over Cleveland and Chicago. I’m going to try to remain calm. Hopefully it won’t give me the heart palpitations I suffered from while watching The Walking Dead last night….or the ones to come if Trump even comes close to winning the election.
