Sweet Caroline For Cops

Cjones05222021

The nation was shocked with the conviction of police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Shocked because normally, cops get away with killing unarmed black men. Prosecutors will often say, “Nothing to see here,” and work diligently to protect police, which is what happened in Ferguson over the cop killing of Michael Brown and Cleveland over the cop killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. In both of those cases, prosecutors put together grand juries that refused to indict the cops. Grand juries typically do what a prosecutor wants. If there’s no indictment, it’s because the prosecutor didn’t want one. Too often when it comes to cops killing an unarmed black man, district attorneys act more like defense lawyers than prosecutors. It’s what they often refer to in the south as the good-ole-boy network. Good-ole boys take care of good-ole boys.

After Chauvin was convicted as a murderer, a lot of white liberals referenced George Floyd’s last words, “I can’t breathe,” and told the nation that finally, black men can breathe. Conservatives used the conviction as to argue that racism if finally over so let’s just stop talking about it. In North Carolina, it’s back to business as usual.

George Floyd’s murderer was convicted in Minnesota. Floyd’s family received justice. Andrew Brown was killed by multiple cops in North Carolina where the laws are designed to protect cops. Even videos of the shooting can’t be released without a judge’s order. In this case, the judge has stonewalled. The good-ole-boy network is strong in North Carolina.

From the scant footage we have been allowed to see, a speeding pickup truck full of Pasquotank County cops piled in the back armed with assault rifles looks more like a planned hit than it does policing. A pickup truck full of white men with weapons on the way to a black guy’s house resembles something from the 1960s in the deep south.

I have never seen a pickup truck with cops riding in the open back. Is this how they police in North Carolina? Were there any “yee-haws” during this ride? Usually in the deep south, the back of a pickup truck is reserved for dogs, kids, and the occasional mother-in-law.

Seven cops were placed on temporary leave during the investigation of Brown’s killing. Two resigned and one retired, but the department claims the resignations and retirement are not connected to the shooting. Were these moves by the individual cops to preserve their pensions?

Brown was shot five times while in his car with the fatal shot being to the back of his head. The back of his head. The cop who killed him was behind him.

There are over two hours of footage but the Brown family has only seen about 18 minutes. At first, they were only allowed to view 20 seconds. Why can’t the family view the entire two hours? It makes me believe there’s something there that would hurt the cops’ and the district attorney’s case.

An attorney for the Brown family says the first shots were while Brown’s car was stationary (in case you’re a Republican, that means it wasn’t moving). A second attorney for the family says the footage did not show Brown initiating contact between his car and the deputies.

The district attorney says the first shots didn’t occur until the car was moving and causing “contact” with the officers, although none of the officers was wounded. Yesterday, District Attorney Andrew Womble announced that the deputies who shot Brown were “justified” in using deadly force and would not be charged criminally. “The facts of this case”, said Womble, “clearly illustrate the officers who used deadly force on Andrew Brown Jr. did so reasonably and only when a violent felon used a deadly weapon to place their lives in danger”

The DA is doing a horrible job of appearing impartial. Note how he had to describe Brown as a “violent felon”? It’s like during the Chauvin trial when conservatives engaged in a campaign of smearing George Floyd. This district attorney is working with the police. In fact, his office is in the police station. The conflict of interest here stinks worse than that vinegar-based BBQ they peddle in North Carolina.

The incident began when a bunch of cops in a speeding pickup truck attempted to serve search and arrest warrants on a non-violent drug charge. The arrest warrant was for possession with intent to sell “approximately three grams of cocaine.” After killing Brown, the cops failed to find any drugs on him, his property, or inside the car.

The Justice Department is conducting an investigation to see if any federal laws were violated by police in violating Brown’s civil rights. It seems like Brown had a right not to get shot in the back of the head by cops.

North Carolina’s justice system is reminding us the struggle for equality remains and that an unfair and racist system remains, especially in the deep south. The good-ole-boy system of cops, district attorneys, and judges is alive and well.

Trained To Do

Cjones04012021

For nearly a year, conservatives have been telling us what a thug and horrible person George Floyd was. They’ve been working hard to paint him as a dangerous element to society in order not just to defend the cop who killed him, but also the culture that killed him. Racist conservatives have been telling us George Floyd deserved to die.

Conservatives forget that the charge was for trying to buy cigarettes with a counterfeit bill. They ignore whether or not he resisted. For conservatives, the charge is that George Floyd was black. For conservatives, that’s a crime deserving of a death sentence without a trial.

Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin pushed his knee into George Floyd’s neck. The only things on both sides of his neck for over nine minutes was a cop’s knee and the concrete of a Minneapolis street. Why was there so much police brutality in this case? Because a black man supposedly tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill. I say “supposedly” because George Floyd has never been found guilty. George Floyd didn’t live to have a trial. Despite efforts by Republicans and assorted racists, George Floyd is NOT on trial here.

It doesn’t matter if George Floyd tried to cash a fake twenty. It doesn’t matter if he tried to cash a boatload of fake twenties. It wouldn’t have mattered if it was a $50 or a $100. It doesn’t matter what Floyd did in the past or whether he was a bad guy or an angel. None of these is a factor in the trial of white cop Derek Chauvin. Was Floyd a threat to the police or anyone else? No. Was he subdued? Yes. So, why is he dead?

Chauvin’s defense attorney, Eric Nelson, told the jury yesterday to ignore the video of Chauvin’s knee on Floyd’s neck. He’s telling them to ignore a nine-minute-plus video. He’s telling them to ignore what they’re seeing. He’s arguing that George Floyd died from drugs in his system and it’s just a coincidence he died while a white cop’s knee was on his neck for over nine minutes. That’s about as believable it’s a coincidence a Capitol Police officer died shortly after being sprayed in the face with bear spray by MAGA terrorists.

An autopsy found traces of fentanyl and methamphetamine in George Floyd’s system, but that he died from asphyxia…while saying “I can’t breathe” and crying out for his mother while a cop’s knee was on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. What’s one way to die from asphyxia? Having a cop’s knee on a neck for over nine minutes.

Nelson also said the crowd was partly to blame because they distracted Officer Chauvin’s attention away from his knee that was on George Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes. Perhaps day two of the trial will reveal there was a squirrel.

The most damning defense strategy from Nelson was when he said, “Derek Chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career.” That is not a defense.

Cops are not supposed to murder, even if they’re trained to do so. Cops are supposed to protect and serve and do it equally. There should be one justice system in this country, not two. This reveals it’s not just Chauvin on trial…it’s all of police culture. If we’re training cops to murder then the entire system that treats Americans unequally needs to be on trial. That entire system needs to be prosecuted and sent away.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. His lawyer is arguing he was trained to murder. He’s arguing all cops are trained to murder.

We don’t need to just remove “bad apples” like Derek Chauvin from our nation’s police forces. We need to remove the system that trained Chauvin and other cops to murder. Because as Chauvin’s attorney argued, killing unarmed black people is exactly what police are trained to do.

Safe To Go Out?

cjones06012020

I have white privilege. I grew up poor and I don’t feel like anyone ever gave me anything, but I still have white privilege. If you’re white, you have that same privilege. You had the privilege of not being afraid by stepping outside. If you want to help fight racism, the first thing you need to recognize is your privilege.

It’s not enough for white people to not be racist. White people now have to, need to be anti-racist. You need to speak out. It’s not enough that you “don’t see race,” and you’re probably lying when you say that. It’s OK to see race. But what you and I need to do is to join the fight against racism.

George Floyd was killed by police. Before they killed him, the police tortured him. They tortured him for 9 minutes in public, in broad daylight and in front of a crowd. The police believed they could get away with it. So far, they kinda-sorta have gotten away with it. While the cop who killed George Floyd and the three others who stood by and watched were all fired, none has been arrested or charged for any crimes. That is white privilege. It’s also police privilege.

While Donald Trump, as president (sic) has said he didn’t like what he saw, he has refused to say the police should be arrested or charged. Keep in mind, he’s screamed for President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Congressman Adam Schiff, and even MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough to be charged and arrested. That is white privilege along with moronic privilege.

When white people see what’s going on and they have more to say about a riot and burning businesses than they do about the killing of George Floyd, that is white privilege. That is also racism.

It’s white privilege to look at burning buildings and to just pass it off as not having anything to do with the killing of George Floyd.

Refusing to try to understand why a building is set on fire after the murder of a black man by police is white privilege. You don’t have to approve of a riot, but you need to understand where it’s coming from. You need to understand why. It’s more than an opportunity to steal stuff or set the world on fire. And trust me, when that building is a police station, it’s a statement. It’s a loud statement and you still may not hear it.

It’s white privilege to scream having to wear a mask in public is a violation of your liberty and civil rights while not fighting for other people when their right to vote has been taken away.

It’s white privilege to claim you’ve never had white privilege.

It’s white privilege to look out your window and look forward to the day that we can socialize with friends, go to a bar or a restaurant, and return to normal.

When a black American looks out their window and see police killing another black man, they see we are returning to normal.

And when we can all go back outside, it will be back to normal for them because they don’t have our privilege.

White people, you have white privilege. You couldn’t get rid of it if you wanted to. But you can use it to help our fellow Americans get that same privilege. The racist dog lady weaponized race. Weaponize your white privilege for our fellow citizens because it’s just as much their country as it yours.

It’s not enough to not be racist. Be anti-racist.

Maga Monkeys

cjones04232020

As I’m sure you’re aware of now, the MAGAt teabagger gang is at it again.

Trump cultists are protesting the government’s stay-at-home orders in several states. They’re anxious to get the economy rolling again, to get back to work, to resume earning a living, and to just get out of the house. We all have that frustration. We all want to earn a living, feed our families, and pay our bills. That’s not partisan.

But, there’s something else to these protests. They’re partisan. Wanting to restart the economy shouldn’t be partisan or red versus blue. But you kinda think it is when they’re flying Confederate flags with their protests. You kinda think it is when they’re carrying guns. You kinda think it is when they’re calling their Democratic governor a Nazi and a fascist. Mostly, you kinda get the impression it’s partisan when they’re wearing and flying pro-Trump signs.

I think my favorite sign has been one that said “Make American Great Again” and “Keep America Great.” Well, which is it? How do we make America great again if it’s already great? How do we keep it great when we haven’t made it great yet?

But then again, these are Trump cultists and there’s not a lot they do that makes sense. For example: They’re protesting for Donald Trump and against his recommendations. The White House issued the recommendation for Americans to self-isolate and quarantine themselves. That’s what they’re protesting while waving MAGA signs. Of course, being a hypocrite and contradiction has always been the hallmark of being a MAGAt shitweasel fucknut. They’re all patriots who ignore Russia attacking our election. They support our troops while supporting Donald Trump’s attacks on Gold Star families, his statement that POWs are “only war heroes because they got captured,” and he only likes people who “aren’t captured.”

These protests aren’t organic. They’ve been organized by right-wing Facebook groups, InfoWars, Fox News, 4chan, and…wait for it…Donald Fucking Trump. Trump advisor Stephen Moore compared them to Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks stood against discrimination. These fruit loops don’t get that they’re not being discriminated against as we’re ALL being told to stay at home. Also, this is a group that’s 99% white. If they’re Rosa Parks then I’m Gandhi, which I’m not because I had two BLT sandwiches last night. Plus, I’m not bald and I don’t walk around wearing nothing except for one of Dr. Birx’s tablecloths.

The biggest instigator for this is Donald Trump. If he was a true leader, he’d tell them to go home and stay home. But no. While arguing that Nancy Pelosi is playing “partisan politics,” he’s sending tweets encouraging attacks against Democratic governors. While everyone is being told to stay home, in states with Democratic and Republican governors, Trump only focused on those with Democrats. He tweeted, “Liberate Michigan” which is governed by Democrat Gretchen Whitmer. He tweeted, “Liberate Minnesota” which is governed by Democrat Tom Walz. “He tweeted, “Liberate Virginia” which is governed by Ralph Northum. The other thing these states have in common is that they’re viewed as swing states.

In addition to tweeting out those attacks, Trump is calling for “liberating” Virginia because of new gun measures…none of which has anything to do with the pandemic (other than indoor gun ranges being deemed “unessential”). Also, I don’t think Virginia is a swing state anymore. While I do believe a Republican can win here statewide, not in the era of Trump. The Republican who has the longest shot of winning Virginia is Donald Trump. No thank you, Mr. Trump, but please, go ahead and waste a lot of money and time here.

Donald Trump could not tell you how the gun laws in Virginia violate the Second Amendment, but he likes to say it does. He also says many of the governors have gone “too far” and that they’ve been “tough” on their people, but he couldn’t tell you how.

Donald Trump refused to tell the protesters to go home. He even said they look responsible and they were social distancing. If you’ve seen photos of the protests, that’s a lie. They are not social distancing and most aren’t wearing masks. Some of my favorites are the guys holding signs saying the coronavirus is a hoax while wearing face masks. If it’s a hoax, then why are you wearing a mask? Again…Trump cultists.

If Donald Trump really wants to support these covidiots, then he needs to go out there and mingle with them. Just stay six feet apart. I’m sure he’ll be fine. But better yet, work on testing.

Donald Trump said, “everyone who needs a test gets a test.” That’s not true and we’re only testing about 50,000 a day. We need to test 50 million a day. Now Trump says it’s the states’ job to test and to acquire the tests. He’s not “responsible.” But, it’s obviously easier to divide the nation with tweets of  “liberation” than doing your job. It’s easier to hold daily mini-MAGA rallies with no real updates other than Donald Trump explaining the difference between a cotton swab and a Q-tip.

There are two sets of people working to get us back out there and reopen the economy. Those are essential workers, who are risking their lives, and those who are staying home. Staying home is working and it’s flattening the curve. These people who are going out and protesting, they’re working against us being able to go out and work and spend money. What they’re doing is a slap in the face to everyone who’s trying to end this.

While people are risking their lives so you can buy groceries, these idiots are risking all of our lives to promote their Dear Leader. They are a disgrace to America and everyone who’s doing their part to end this pandemic.

If you’re out there protesting, I respect your right to protest but I don’t respect you or what you’re doing. But then again, you already disrespected everything this nation stands for by voting for Donald Trump. You are all bad Americans.

If you wanna stop staying home, then stay home. And if you really want to get this nation rolling again, stop being Donald Trump’s flying monkeys. Or more specifically in your case, stop being Donald Trump’s flying fucknuts.
